So Escapist do you listen to Viking Metal?
And what's your favorite Viking Metal band?
For my opinion I love to listen to Viking Metal, and the best bands are Ensiferum, Turisas and Korpiklaani. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x-5ZkTMyMc There's a link to Varangian Guard.. and I dont know how to captcha...

Ummmm Amon Amarth, really good for when you need to get the adrenaline going when walking.

Though I do like a bit of Manowar

Kind of opposites there

Ensiferum, Turisas are more Battle metal (at least thats what they say in interviews) I always associate Viking Metal as being a fairly dark genre, and I personally feel that Turisas just don't come accross as that dark to me. Oh Eluveitie and TYR as well in that list.
Korpiklaani to a degree but again they are more akin to folk/huumpa metal.

Eluveitie is more Folk Metal than Viking Metal. Fintroll is kinda half/half.

But yeah, I love Viking Metal.

Tyr is alright. Gravedigger in a way is viking. I don't listen to that much viking metal. To be honest I don't even really spend all that much effort defining where one sub-genre begins and ends, I just listen to metal.

I'm going to Heidenfest this (next?) year, basically most of the best viking metal with a little folk and pirate metal thrown in for good measure.

The only Viking metal band I like is Amon Amarth, as many people have mentioned.

Been to see them live in Manchester, they were fucking brilliant.

New album is OK. There's a few awesome tracks on there, but I can take or leave the rest really. Still all in all they are probably one of my favourite metal bands.

I listen to Amon Amarth and Turisas on occasion, but not a lot. I don't really like that kind of metal really, it's a little too cheesy. It's good for a laugh though, but I prefer Alestorm as it's all about beer (or mead), fighting and wenches.

I thought this was solved in another thread. That there was no such thing as Viking or Pirate etc Metal. They were all just the normal sub-genres (Heavy, death, etc.) but with a theme.

Technically, the viking/Nordic metal takes cues from folk songs in it's structures and note progressions. (Most, anyways) And therefore it could be argued that it is it's own subgenre of metal.

Personally, I think it's all just enjoyable. Especially when you're about to do something physical.

Viking Metal is not a genre, Folk metal is a genre and a lot of folk metal bands happen to write about Vikings. Regardless, the folk Metal bands I listen to are Ensiferum, Wintersun, Amon Amarth, Suidakra, Agalloch, Amorphis.. and I think that about covers it.

Basically what the guy said below you lol. Normal sub-genre: folk metal with a theme.

I don't. Not my thing, really, but I gave it a fair chance.

I've moved away from almost all metal, as of the last couple of years, anyway.
