Villains and depth in videogames

Maruburg from Alpha Protocl had one of my favorite moments in villainy. He's also a pretty good mirror to Thorton, having felt abandoned and betrayed by his own government, but choosing to take things in a different direction than you did. Also, at the end of the Rome missions, if you decided to save the bombs over the hostage, you can't tell me what happened next didn't make you want to gun down the bastard right there.

Apart from the many internet memes he has spawned, he is an awesome villain. He has 100+ clones to awaken and think like him when he has been killed (a couple of times I think), he kills people just for fun, and of course he has this quest for power and status, all for himself.
Damn, that's pretty evil in my book.

I see i was not the first to come up with this.
As soon as i read it i was like 'Seriously? Iago? he's not any more complex than villians i've seen in games'
He's got a bunch of hinted at motives, and all of them are quite stereotypical/cliche.
Jealousy, revenge, paranoia, being a prick.
(Somewhat simplified, but i can't be bothered listing them all seperately, 'he suspected othello sex'd his wife' 'he was angry at being denied promotion', etc. They all fall into the above categories so i'll just leave it at that.)
I'm gonna go with a recent example and risk getting chewed out by saying Cesare Borgia from Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
I mean, the guy's sole motivation can be boiled down to

doing everything he can do outdo his old man, really, such as starting off by trying to kill Ezio in Monterigionni; taking over Rome; planning to take all of Italy and finally removing Rodrigo permanently (which leads to his undoing quicker than the Assassins do) His actions lead to developing a ridiculous level of smugness and arrogance to the point that he still claims he will be victorious when Ezio has whittled down his control over Rome AND stolen the Apple of Eden back off him. Even after having been in prison for years, resorting to taking over comparitively small Spanish towns with a hired army of mercenaries and having said army brutalised by a lone Ezio he STILL refuses to give up and plays the "I am invincible" card.
The funny thing is, the real Cesare was actually that brutal so he's not too over the top and it makes him scarier if you immerse yourself in the Assassin's Creed alternate history schtick. He's not very practical or effective as an evil overlord, just a spoiled kid who thought nothing could stop him and was blind to his own undoing as he progressively lost his sanity.
