Was Dr. Wily actually doing anything evil? He just keeps putting evil robots at the end of grueling obstacle courses, after all.
You mean the robots he stole and reprogrammed after Dr. Light created (or maybe they at least CO-created) them for peaceful purposes?

Anyway, you know something that I'd really like to see?
Antagonists (i.e. "bad guys") that aren't actually doing anything WRONG. In the end it turns out that YOU are the smug asshole that's out to ruin it for everyone else. That's something that I'd really love to see a game pull off.
After running around destroying things, smashing faces, and so on for a long while... You (the player, not your character) realize that you've been the evil asshole all along and the final boss fight is a Hero that's come to rid the world of your evil.

Then again, there's a game (and it's sequel) that sort of did that, except instead of a big reveal in the end it was the whole selling point of the game that you were the bad guy all along, sending your minions out to destroy everything cute and fluffy they could get their grubby little hands on.
Ah, yes.. Good ol' Dungeon Keeper. ...What? ;)

that too
infact, sometimes I feel like the villains just lost the "protagonist" role to someone else when the cast picked straws

Borderlands. You were kind of just a greedy asshole who wanted all that cash and stuff, and the villains were doing the same thing. The only difference is that you were obviously WAY better than any of the Crimson Lance.

Same thing goes for the Enclave in Fallout 3. Given the games that preceded it, it seemed like you would maybe be able to take a side, but the story was totally on-rails.

Andrew Ryan?
He might not have been in the MORAL right, but what he did did make sense.
Yeah,but was it legal?
yes it was his city really
OT: erm well alot of villian arent actually doing anything illegal. erm the only one i can think of atm is the bosses in ac. None of them were doing illegal things but you were led to believe that they were evil and needed to be killed. so you killed them and it turns out your masters evil not them. talk about total mind fuck

Urcila the sea witch. I mean that whole thing she had going on seemed to be politics that got way out of hand. I mean, what if she would have been a good ruler? Ariel's father seemed like a bigger jerk then urcila. At least Urcila put it all on paper her intentions and did relitivly fair dealings. Unlike her father who blows up all ariel's stuff and would have let that prince guy drown.

Well technically, since the combine rule the Earth, they could make all the rules. So technically, they aren't doing anything wrong legally.

Norsefire from V for Vendetta (the book).

Elected to their position, and passed (immoral) laws to accomplish their intended end.

Tim from braid.

He just wanted to save the princess and marry her except she's actually his mother and she's running away and he can never catch her except she's actually the atomic bomb and he does catch her and- and...

Fuck it, I have no idea what's going on in that game and neither does anyone else.

I guess Andrew Ryan wasn't doing anything wrong, but he was considered the antagonist because that's what you're lead to believe. In all honesty, I think what he was working for and his goals are definitely something to respect him for if nothing else.

That doesn't make what they did legal. It just makes you an asshole.

And I don't think they have a legal-system in fallout, at least not one that applies for the whole of Capital Wasteland, just the cities.

Or was he?

I think most villains are generally breaking at least some sort of law.

Maybe the villain in some shitty teenage girl movie isn't?
I don't know, what law is Ryan breaking? He certainly might not be the best guy in the world, but he certainly isn't BLARG I'M EVIL! in the traditional sense.

Okay, I'm talking along the lines of morally wrong. Legality doesn't exactly...exist in Fallout 3 or any such thing. No one in Borderlands nor Fallout 3 were doing anything MORALLY wrong, IMO.

I think everyone does something morally wrong. Then again morals are mostly opinions on how you should behave, so... That means you think it's OK to do all the things the Enclave and the Crimson Lance does?

...And then trying to manipulate things so Ariel would get screwed over and have her guy snatched from under her nose by exploiting her handicap, and subsequently tried to manipulate her into becoming a murderer once her immortal soul was at risk of being destroyed. Of course, the Disney version is a bit more mild...
