Just saw a violent ad about texting while driving which involves about 5 people dying in a three car pile-up and someone's neck getting broken [remembers the "CRACK"].
So, i figured, what do you think about this ad and ultimately, texting while driving?
I think it was partly the fault of the driver on the opposite not paying attention to the other car veering slightly, and also, WTF? Can't you drive?

OT: texting while driving is a riddiculous idea... if your looking away from the road you are just asking to die... howeve, people calling i dont mind... a lot already use hands free devices..

You don't text while you drive for the same reason you don't read while you drive. You're driving. It's important to pay attention while you're hurtling down the road at high speed so you don't drift into the other lane or off the road and into a ditch. Though, at least you're not responsible for anyone's injuries but yours if you go driving off the side of the road.

I haven't seen that ad, though.

First time I heard about SMS messaging in a story on the radio back in ab out 1999-2000 my comment was... "what sort of moron would stand there typing a message with thier thumb on a tiny keypad when they could just ring"

Not one of my better tech development calls LOL.

Having said that.... its like anything... people walk in front of busses reading book and listening to MP3s.... if your a twat... your a twat whether you SMS or not.

it's distracting enough to talk on the phone while drivin, but it's physically impossible to text while keeping your eyes on the road. In california it's illegal to talk on the phone without a hands free device while driving but, you can pull up right next to a cop, whip out your phone and text while going 65 down the freeway and get in no legal trouble for it.

The ad has obviously done it's job. What's the bet you'll think twice before letting yourself/the driver reach for a mobile while in a moving vehicle?

[rant]

When I first found out that people were TEXTING while driving, my first thoughts running through my head were something like 'What the hell!? DAMN YOU MOBILE PHONES!'... okay, I exacturate it just a little, but seriously, have people forgoten about talking? What about the speaker function? Companies didn't invent all those bluetooth gadgets for no reason. It costs more credit or however you pay for your 'chat time', but it will, believe it or not, severely reduce the risk of you crashing your car and potentially killing bystanders, other drivers and/or yourself. That's right, for a couple of dollars, you are keeping your life.

SHOCK-HORROR!

Unless there's someone else in the car.

You should take a look at cars passing in front of College campuses...at least 1 out of every 8 cars has a driver texting...I kid you not...

My friends and I play a version of Russian Roulette where we see if we can make it from one end of the university to the other without getting killed.

You still have faith in humanity? How?
I'm curious about this as well, seriously

Texting while driving is up there on the dumbest thing to do while driving on my list, followed by questioning why it's stupid to text while driving. You're driving a 2 ton metal cage down a road filled with similarly sized metal cages and sometimes semis, the text can wait.

Yeah, but have you noticed how some people react like Pavlov's dogs when they get a new text. Doesn't matter where they are or what they're doing they must reply to that text! My flatmate is like that. She needs to read her texts right away, no matter what she's doing.

Well, yes, there is that. Hopefully they'd take away the phone before the driver got everyone killed.

I believe there was a story out of Boston about a bus driver who crashed his/her bus and injured several passengers cause they were texting.
