A Hermit's Cave
"Well? Are you going to say anything else?" my attendant prompted me.

I introduced myself, what more do you want?!, I would've snapped back had the others not maintained their collective gaze upon me. I had remained standing out of form and my coat was neatly folded and deposited on the chair beside where I had been seated. Comfortable despite the silence, I noticed the others were not so...

"My name is Aidan Dravencole," I repeated, "London... twenty-five... graduate in natural sciences... statistical analyst for DFG Logistics Division... sword-arts, both eastern and western, martial arts, Thai and Chinese... and Baroque music..."

I finished archly...

"You really need to work on your oration, sir!" the pilot almost laughed.

"Well, hey," Erik said with a quick wave. "I'm Erik. I go to school at Syracuse, I'm a journalist, and I love music. And that just about covers it."

He went to sit down, but quickly added to his self-description.

"Oh, and I know Jeff over here. We're practically neighbors. He's much weirder than he lets on," he said with a sly grin.

Jeff laughed at Erik's little prod at him, he couldn't deny the fact though since it was pretty much true. "Sadly he's right I am a lot weirder than I seem to be right now. You guys will probably find this out later once I get a little more used to you guys." Jeff said. A lot of people think that he is shy but he really is not, he just doesn't speak out until he gets used to people. He's fine if you talk to him but he's not going to speak up about things often.

Dr. Kleiner continued to watch the group on the monitor. "What do you think of them Jane?" Dr. Kleiner asked.

"Well Doctor I think with the proper training they could become more than adequate soldiers." The AI "Jane" responded in an icy computer tone. Jane had the camera linked to her so she could also watch and study the new test subjects.

"Jane are the preparations for the simulation complete?" Dr. Kleiner asked.

"Yes doctor the preparations are complete and ready for use whenever you are ready." Jane replied.

"Excellent then I shall go say hello to the new test subjects." Dr. Kleiner said getting up from his seat. He had already completed a basic information sheet on all of the test subjects and was ready to meet them face to face. He walked from his office in the back of the building and made a quick check up to see if all of the test subject rooms that they will be staying in are set up. Taking a quick glance inside each room to make sure that they should have everything that they would need he stepped out into the entrance.

"Hello Dr. Kleiner I had the test subjects wait in the waiting room like you requested. Would you like me to call them back now?" Lyn asked.

"No no that won't be necessary I would like to go meet them in the waiting room." Dr. Kleiner responded. Dr. Kleiner walked to the waiting room and opened the door when the group of people in the room looked over at him. "Hello everyone I am Dr. Kleiner and I welcome you to project Virtual Universe." Dr. Kleiner said as he walked into the waiting room.

Dr. Kleiner was in his late 50's and had a balding head with grey hair and was cleanly shaven. He had a white lab coat on and black pants and dress shoes. He looked over the new test subjects through his own eyes and was not thrilled with what he had but he could make do with it. "Now then do any of you have any questions before I take you back to my lab?" Dr. Kleiner asked.

I paused to let the others volunteer their questions. Carefully covering my mouth while Dr Kleiner conversed with the others, I muttered into the mic...

"Why do I get the feeling comms are going to blocked once I set foot into the lab?"

"Because you're right, sir," the pilot replied.

"Blocking devices, and we don't have the equipment on hand to circumvent it, you'll be on your own," the attendant added.

"Consider it a learning experience!" the pilot grinned, "But don't worry, the Director knows about it all and nothing's going to go wrong."

"Oh great...," I regretted saying that out loud as Kleiner was now looking over at me, somewhat superciliously.

"Have you anything add... Mr Dravencole?" he eyed me suspiciously.

As I looked around the room I saw the many other people surrounding me. I started to feel awkward that I knew that some of them were older then myself. I always had felt shy around strangers or older people. Then I remembered my almost empty bank account and wallet, I knew I only did this for the money so I could save it up to buy a bike.

As the gray balding man walked into the room I immediately straightened up, feeling like I have to be formal for this man since he is dressed up in his science uniform. "How much are we exactly being paid and will I get a flight back home...you know, so I don't get left here stranded and poor." I popped the question out lout as it came to my attention.

Nam Woon tried not to stare at the others but he couldn't help it. His curiosity was practically forcing his eyes onto the others. He just wanted to know them that was all. It was a strange feeling, knowing that on the internet he would adore their presence but in real life he was shying away. It's always easier when you're behind a screen and across an ocean to boot. He would feel as an equal online but here, he felt different. It was silly, he knew, but that couldn't stop his human, completely natural reaction to being put in a new environment with new people. Finally getting himself to look away, Nam Woon noticed that they were asking questions. Shaun's one grabbed his interest the most. All he heard was money so Nam Woon assumed he was asking when they would get paid. Getting here was a gamble of its own and the sooner he had the two-k, was that why 2K was called that?, the sooner he would feel at monetary ease.
