Vita Outsells Wii U in Japan

I give the PS Vita a lot of shit. Almost as much as I give the Wii U and 3DS. Its outselling the Wii U IN JAPAN?! That's an issue. I also think that the Japanese Vita got a price cut so that may be a factor. We also have to remember that the Japanese only games are a factor to that.

It's the most expensive system without many games for it. Japan is getting the Dragon Quest MMO for the WiiU soon, so this particular problem already has a ticking counter to when it'll be solved.
The PS Vita is months away from getting the new Phantasy Star MMO on it. Phantasy Star is still pretty big in Japan. Its also able to be played with the free to play PC version. And seeing as how the Japanese price for the Vita just got cut, it may not be so easy for the Wii U to brush the Vita away, as sad as that is to say.

Waaaaaait, New Super Mario Bros U is kinda like Super Mario World? Now that sounds great! I'll have to check that out.

I have yet to try the Monster Hunter demo because my network seems to be going wobbly on me so I have only tried the 3DS version (which did not support circle pad pro), but I think I am going to get a classic controller for when I am getting the Wii U version.
Yeah it's basically the same old mario bros but there's a spin jump that works like the super mario world one and the world map just feels huge and expansive and has divergance and a fair few more hidden exits than I'm used to, I'm currently hunting down all the star coins and I've cleared half of the worlds of them. It'll tke you a good 8 hours to get to the final boss and beat him, then there's star coin collecting, hidden levels and exits, challenge stages and such, etc. It's definately worth the price and feels so much more whole and satisfying than the others in the series have. It also looks frigging gorgeous.

I just didn't enjoy the MH3U demo to be honest, I gave it a shot but it just wasn't really my cup of tea.
I guess I've got to put that on my to do list. Also Monster Hunter isn't for everyone, while I loved Monster Hunter Tri I think it might be a niche title. It took me a while to get into it and well, it is really repetitive and you'll spend quite some time gathering materials. At least there's Pikmin to look forward to.
Niche to you maybe, but fact is; Monster hunter games are system sellers in Japan.
Compare to Halo and COD levels of popularity in western countries.
If you ever tried a Asian (Korean at least) MMORPG you would know that they LOVE mindless grinding.

The first thing I actually did when reading this article was to see if they had just released a new Monster Hunter game for the Vita, but nope the only thing released in the past week was a dating sim re-release.

Why thank you for stating a well known fact. The Monster Hunter series is incredibly popular in Japan and less so in Europe and America. You know what that means? Also you might have missed the point where I said that personally I love Monster Hunter.

Edit: Also isn't it hilarious how you start off by saying it's not a niche title then explain exactly why it is a niche title?

If I remember right, some stores decided to do the price cut for the Vita earlier than Sony wanted, so that's probably why there's a small sales spike for it right now. Plus next month Nintendo is getting the Wii U version of Dragon Quest X, so we'll see how that goes.

Eh. To be honest, Nintendo could use a karmic backhand right about now. They essentially released the Wii 1.5, and are surprised it's not selling well in a generation that tired of this stuff years ago. Maybe once they determine that they have to earn gamers' trust again, they will start trying new things instead of toys and gimmicks.
Uh, all games are toys, so I don't see how they're doing anything different from Sony except being far more competent and less ashamed of themselves.

Sure they are. A plaything is a toy, regardless of the age of the audience.
Maybe you could list some other toys that require a picture ID to purchase?

What ID? Neither me nor my dad have ever had to present ID in order to purchase a game, regardless of the Rating. What State do you live in? My advice; move away from it.

OT: That sucks. I guess we can expect sucky February sales too. However, next month is WiiU-Palooza (The Amazing Spider-Man, Lego City: Undercover, Need For Speed, Monster Hunter 3, The Walking Dead and Toki Tori 2), so we can expect sales in Japan and America to start picking up, even if it's temporary.

I've never understood why we put so much emphasis on whether consoles are selling more or less units than one another, as if this means a console has won or lost some sort of make believe contest.

And then there's when people say things like "the WiiU is in trouble". In trouble of what? What's going to happen if it's sales aren't high enough? The Gamecube had poor sales, the original PSP had even worse sales, yet both were financial successes even if their profits were smaller than expected.

I'm actually hoping the WiiU has some trouble, it'll stir Nintendo to get off their ass and pump out some good games for it.

It's such a damn shame. The Wii U is a really great system - I bought one late last year and I'm loving it in every respect but the lack of games. I'd gladly buy any multi platform games for it rather than for my 360 or PS3 but they just don't seem to be coming at all. Still, I don't regret buying it, Zombiu was excellent and Bayonetta 2/Pikmin 3 are coming, and we'll see Zelda/Mario etc eventually. It seems to be suffering the same way the Dreamcast did - excellent system, huge potential, no support.

...they ARE making good games for it, but it seems that people forget something: games take TIME, they'll be released when they're done. You cannot just release something because people are throwing a hissy fit over droughts. Better a game come out later and good then come out early and SUCK. Nintendo is one of the few companies that understands that turning in a production line is BAD

TANK TANK TANK! is an appropriate title for the system.

Hopefully single platforming developers take note of this. I say this since only as someone that hopes for more Vita games, as a a vita owner.

I look old enough so I have never been carded but I seen kids carded plenty of times in Gamestop. Is Gamestop a toy store? In department stores, are video games sold in the toy department?

I thought we were beyond people (not the word I want to use) believing that video games are toys but I guess some people are still living in the 80's.

How can you lose to the Vita? It's the same price, sort of. xD The Vita with a 32GB memory card is 349.99$

Funny, I have the opposite situation. I'm 23 and I'm asked for ID. When I was 20, someone thought I was 16.

Well, I have a full beard and some wrinkles on my forehead so they figure I must be atleast 18. Funny thing is, when I was a smoker I got carded every once in a while with the same beard and and few less wrinkles.

Can't say I'm surprised. The Wii U is just not enticing. I look at it and think: why would I want to buy this thing? It is barely more powerful than previous generation consoles, at a much higher price, and still with a very limited library. Sure, the Wii was a hit, despite a modest hardware. But it was cheap, and had an unique gimmick. The Wii U can't be as cheap because its controller is too complex. And you can't even say it is much of an gimmick, as everyone has a tablet now. Worse, the damn thing has the downsides of a tablet (bulky, expensive) without the upsides (portable, huge app library).
