I live in Los Angeles, where it never snows, but it sometimes rains.
And when it rains, everyone flips the fuck out.

LA cannot even handle rain. The roads crack. Potholes form everywhere. The malls leak because you can't tell there's a leak until it rains and that never happens so by the time it does rain, the leak is a pretty big one.

and no one is prepared for driving in the rain. LA traffic is bad on a perfect day. When it rains, there's hundreds of accidents.

In my 10 years of school, I've never had a free day from school because of snow...

Hello dear Escapist, a little background information 1st. Live in the southern united states, just north enough to get snow/sleet, but just south enough for the shcool board to *Pun not intended* freeze up when it does finally hit. Today, December 17, we had less than an inch of solid snowfall. The school system shut down all schools in about 10 counties.

So here is the question, my friends, how do those in positions of authority near you react to snow? Do you live in an area where you never recieve it and dont have to worry about it? Do you live where snow is a constant, something that simply becomes part of the norm? Do you live where any amount of snow causes almost complete sociotal breakdown? Share with us your tales of intrest!

Bloody hell, I'm in England, it's usually 2inches to a foot, plus? And we've only had my schools closed twice, uni once. Two times due to burst water pipes, once because of transportation issues. Lucky sod.

Born and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Now I live right next to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Closing anything due to snow is non-existent. You have no idea what snow is until it covers your 6 foot security fence.

England's authorities reactions to snow;

Right, we've had plenty of forecasts saying when the snow will arrive, so we have prepared prope-OMFG it's snowing! It's actually happened! The white death has arrived! everyone stay at home, lock all doors and windows, save the children! (Goes into feotus position under desk).

Seriously...some countries thrive with conditions ten times worse all year round, but when we get just a bit of snowfall, the entire country grinds to a halt.

I live in Colorado, but pretty much on the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Because of that, we get sheltered from a lot of bad weather. Denver and Pueblo will be buried, and we'll only have a couple inches. Because of that, we don't get a lot of closings because of snow unless the roads really are iced up. People don't really care a whole lot about snow here actually.

This. I live in the county south west of Denver and its like "What 5ft of snow!? Pfff there fine" I can't imagine closing a school for only 2 inchs of snow, I mean come on man up, its just snow, I promise.

I'm pretty sure if the local authorities saw snow, they wouldn't have a frigging clue what to do, and i'm pretty sure by that time the world would have stopped turning.

Being from Queensland gives you a guarantee of no snow in the state, ever. If it does, I'm having frigging snow cones.

Where I live in general, when the snow prevents you from getting out of your house, you can call in sick. Otherwise, grab the shovel and start digging.

heh yeah i'm in TN, we had our first snow of the year Monday and the first day of finals week was canceled because of it...all half inch of it, so...yeah lol

oh and i'm from western NY originally so i find it absolutely hilarious

I think we go to the same school, savage. I've actually seen this place shut down for less, including one time we closed in anticipation of snow that never arrived. Fun times.

I'm also from Maryland, and drivers from both states proceed to freak the hell out when the snow starts to fall.

Washington State over here. Nobody does anything when it snows. No I don't mean people don't leave their houses. Everyone leaves their houses. Yeah the schools might shut down, but otherwise buisness goes on as usual. Except nobody bothers to bring out the plows, at least not on the surface roads, they usually plow at least one lane of the freeways. Then after everyone drives on the snow it turns to a sheet of ice the next night. That is the source of all the wonderful videos of vehicles pirouetting down the steep roads in Seattle every year. Or we have charter buses full of kids hanging over the freeway. Either way it gives me some entertaining news to listen to one the radio as I pass all the cars in the ditch. I never seem to have a problem. Put some good all season tires on my truck and I manage just fine. Rarely even use the chains unless I need to get up a particularly challenging hill.

Hell I drove around for several winters in Utah without chains or snow tires, and I pretty much only drove the Saturn I also owned at the time.

Now i have to ask why schools in america closes down when it's snowing? It's not like it y'know, actually does anything.

Odd that someone that could butcher that statement so badly would be willing to make it.

Here we have to go to school even if (record for me) is minus 38C outside. I had to bike 2 kilometers so I felt a bit cold after that ride. Also there was just under 1 meter of snow in many places and half the roads were blocked so I had to "swim" my way through on a couple of places, mainly because I have some weird ways I walk/bike to school ^^

I live in Gothenburg, Sweden and nothing will shut down unless there's like a meter of snow outside. Which, during my lifetime, has only happened once.

Anyway, my school only closed once because of the amount of snow we had on the roofs. That was two glorious days of extra vacation.

Snow days are for sissies. Real Pennsylvanians go to school in everything up to and including 10 feet of snow.

I've lived in Erie for 21 years, and we've only had the schools close once, and that was due to ice.

Canada... we've got about a foot of snow on the ground so far, it's been a pretty warm winter so it wasn't staying on the ground well at first. It is now and everything is running fine despite the crappy plowing services in place. Schools don't actually get snow days up here unless the hot water or electricity in the building stops working. Last year I had to get to morning exams with about four feet of snow and the public transit system was on strike... meaning I had to walk the 40 minutes in from my house each day.

For schools to close in Wisconsin it generally takes a foot of snow, sheer ice, or wind-chill of -25F.

There are always exceptions though.
