I don't the schools would shut down with less than a meter of snow over here(Netherlands), But seeing how the railway system crashes with 2cm of snow, I doubt I'd make it to college anywhays. Right now half the country's stuck in traffic jams. Lol.

I live in the UK and we've had some terrible snow this year that caused loads of schools to close - which was surprising because normally we would still have gone in anyway, but none of the teachers could get into school, so they closed it. My school's attitude is 'as long as there's teachers to teach and students to learn, the school is open!!'.

More likely to have schools shut down because it's too hot .... I think that if the closed temperature get to 42 or 43 degrees (celcius)I think the parents are notified and kids shipped home.

I think that's how it works ... though I'm not sure.

In England we're kind of bitches about the snow, practically everything closes down not just the schools, and people panic buy all the bread, it's kind of silly.

I live in New Brunswick, Canada. So yea, we do enjoy healthy amounts of snow every winter. Sometimes they have to cancel schools and some other public facilities, but it is not directly depends on the amount of snow, but more with how fast that snow falls. Basically if it falls faster then they can clean the roads, so that public busses can?t get everywhere they suppose to, then they close schools, and etc. Otherwise life is good:

I live in a little swamphole in the Willamette valley. It snows for a grand-total of 3 days a year, at least over the past 20 years or so. A couple of days before Thanksgiving we got maybe a quarter inch of snow and I don't know about the rest of the local government, but all the schools shut down. It came in overnight and was gone by mid-afternoon. Considering they didn't get gravel/salt on any of the roads until it was halfway melted though I guess it was a good call.

Are you secretly the president of Madagascar?
Is that a subtle reference to Pandemic?

Around here, the authorities usually go mad when an inch of snow falls. Two weeks ago was one of the only times I think they were justified in shutting schools. I didn't enjoy a week off of work though, because I didn't get paid =(.

North Carolinian here as well

CMS was fucking awful when it came to snow (or anything), I pity all who suffer under their rule in the school system.

I laughed.

But that's just because I live in Iceland.

Hello dear Escapist, a little background information 1st. Live in the southern united states, just north enough to get snow/sleet, but just south enough for the shcool board to *Pun not intended* freeze up when it does finally hit. Today, December 17, we had less than an inch of solid snowfall. The school system shut down all schools in about 10 counties.

So here is the question, my friends, how do those in positions of authority near you react to snow? Do you live in an area where you never recieve it and dont have to worry about it? Do you live where snow is a constant, something that simply becomes part of the norm? Do you live where any amount of snow causes almost complete sociotal breakdown? Share with us your tales of intrest!

EDIT: Huh, didn't know there were so many N.C. member around here.
I live on the coast; I've never seen snow... only fog

Around here snow is a proverbial four-letter word (as opposed to just literal), it's like an annoying friend or relative that you know will never leave you alone for long and you've learned to deal with their special brand of insanity, so only when someone gets hurt do you do anything that you haven't done 100 times before, each as begrudging as the last and the next. Fortunately I'm still able to see the fun potential in snow, and there are few vistas more beautiful to me than a landscape covered in a blanket of snow.

Apparently Britain is about to get eight inches of snow over the weekend. Right now it's a balmy five degrees for most of England. There had better be a fucking blizzard in the next two days to justify my having to buy a train ticket to get home.
About to get? It's been snowing all day, we've already got it!

OT: Unless there's ice and it's getting dangerous, most places stay open. Schools like to shut down more than most though.

We're pretty calm about snow where I live. It's usually "Oh hey. A good amount of snow is on the ground. That can cause problems. Better close the school."
But that doesn't mean that we won't freak out sometimes.
Last year, there was a giant blizzard that was supposed to hit us so they released school early because of it. It never ended up snowing.
We like to call it 'Snowless Snowday Wednesday'.
