Death row inmates are frequently called "dead men walking," so one assumes they wake up dead every day.

Not to mention that if you're like me, you wake up feeling dead at times. Or at least feeling like there's no biological reason why you should still be alive.

This is about waking up dead, not waking up feeling dead

The time during sleep when your not dreaming, is just like death. You have no recollection of yourself or that time.

So we have all experienced what death is like, not so scary eh? No need to make up imaginary friends in the sky.

You can't do it literally of course... You can die in your sleep however, and "waking up dead" is just a term used to describe said... deadification...

Even after being decapitated you are still a live for a little while. I'd imagine that no matter what happens to you, you'll be awake for a little while before completely kicking the bucket. You can't wake up dead but you can wake up and then without completely realising what has happened, die.

So you died, then came back to life. Unless your jesus, no it will never happen.
Or unless you get ressusitated by paramedics, it's not all that unusual.

Its a turn of pharse, I don't think it's meant to be taking in the literal sense. Your girlfriend is just over thinking things.

Um...it's not?
Unless you somehow become a vampire in your sleep, I guess.
this seems the most reasonable answer. :nods in agreement:
Well it could mean dead tired, just saying.
waking up dead means you're dead tired?
that's some logic there.
Logic? I was simply putting forward an idea, I don't go through a flow chart before posting. I often hear people say, 'I feel like death' when they are tired, but you seem to have an inability to listen.
i wasn't trying to insult your logic my dear fellow, merely insulting the logic of using such a phrase. seems a little backwards to me, that's all.

and yes, saying you 'feel like death' makes sense to me, but i personally have never heard 'i woke up dead this morning' to describe feeling tired. perhaps i simply haven't met someone that cool yet.

Nice answers but unless you suffer from some sort of insomnia-mortis, which I don't really believe exists... You will never know how it feels like to wake up dead since, even getting resuscitated by paramedics or whatever will bring you to life not to death =P.
