Meta was stunned for a moment, allowing Ragnar to get back to dry ground unmolested. As the marine was moving out of the water, the Meta grabbed his bruteshot and turned invisible. He moved towards the marine slowly, barely disturbing the water.

Ragnar scrambled from the water, glittering droplets streaming from his grey ceramite like a breaching whale, and snatched up his chainsword before whirling to search for the Meta, teeth bared in a silent snarl as he scanned the rippling water. Anticipating a salvo of grenades out of ambush, he grabbed his helmet and jammed it down over his head, ignoring the water that gathered inside it from his soaking hair.

Meta braced himself, then shot up in the sky. He came at least ten meters up in a shower of water. He was still invisible, making it incredibly hard to tell where exactly he was and what kind of blow was going to come. When the Meta closed in, he stretched back his arm and sent forward a dangerous punch against Ragnar's head.

With his helmet on, the armour's auto-senses augmented Ragnar's already extra-ordinary perception, and he could hear every drop of water strike the ground, even as the great explosion in the rock pool told him exactly what the Meta had done. With a roar of defiance he swept his chainsword upwards, the promethium motor echoing his battle-cry with savage vigour.

The Meta was hit along the side, truly testing the mettle of the Meta's armour. Sparks flew everywhere, along with some shards and splinters. Had it not been a glancing hit, the Meta would have been far worse off. His fist travelled straight into Ragnar's helmeted face, followed shortly by the bulk of the Meta colliding with the marine.

Had Ragnar not been a son of the Emperor and fully armoured, the momentum of the Meta's attack would have killed him there and then even without the punch. Even so, the blow to his vox-grille momentarily blinded him with static and the weight of his foe slammed him to the ground with the Meta on top of him, his chainsword knocked from his grip. Though the ceramite held and protected him from the concussion, the crimson glow of a damage alert rune somewhere in his auspex display warned Ragnar that he had to put an end to the fight soon. As the gleaming, featureless dome loomed over the forboding death mask of the Astartes helmet, Ragnar wrapped a thick arm around the back of the Meta's neck and pulled him down into a bearhug that would make the bulky bruteshot impossible to bring to bear. At the same time, he drew the preternaturally sharp combat knife that all Space Wolf neophytes were gifted upon their induction, which Ragnar had proudly named Kraken's Tooth, and rammed it into the Meta's side where the chainsword had ravaged his armour, working the blade to try and drive it through the remaining layers of defence.

The knife quickly ate through the remaining armour, going deep into the side of the Meta. He snarled in pain, but still grabbed hold of Ragnar's helmet, attempting to rip it off to then punch him in the face.

Ragnar felt the armour give way and twisted the knife with a surge of triumph. The helmet seals strained as the Meta tugged at his helmet, but it was designed for close combat against giant Orks and Chaos Space Marines, and would not tear free easily from the kind of blunt force that the Meta was trying to apply. Ragnar lurched up and headbutted the Meta's faceplate, all the while continuing to brutalise his torso with Kraken's Tooth.

Meta once again hissed in pain, smashing down a fist on Ragnar's helmet before wrenching himself free. He stood up while pulling his bruteshot from his back, bleeding quite a lot from his side.

Undaunted by the punch that had been made awkward and premature by the Meta's attempt to escape his grip, Ragnar rolled hastily to one side, narrowly avoiding the Meta's dispatching blow. Snatching up his chainsword he sprang to his feet and faced the Meta, ignoring the urgent flash of the damage runes in his helmet.
"Why don't you accept your fate, traitor?" He snarled, eyes flitting from the knife still lodged between Meta's ribs and back up to his face. "You will not escape the Emperor's retribution!"

OoC: I imagined it more like the second response, sorry for not being clearer.

The Meta hissed slowly, reloading his bruteshot. He then began circling cautiously while his shields recharged.

Ragnar was not about to give the Meta that kind of opening, especially as he made his intentions clear by reloading his weapon. Before he finished doing that Ragnar was on the move, charging him with a feral howl bursting from his throat and his chainsword poised for a rending blow.

The Meta raised his own weapon, letting the two blades clash. The bruteshot blade was far better quality than the Meta's armour, managing to hold up to the chainsword. Meta then pushed sideways before stabbing against Ragnar's armpit.

Ragnar decided to take Meta's friendly advice to move sideways and took a couple of bounding steps to his right, avoiding the brunt of the force behind Meta's thrust and keeping his chainsword between himself and the enemy. He promptly took advantage of this with a brisk upward slash at the Meta's ribcage.

OOC: I was wondering when these two would actually get around to using their weapons to try and kill each other. :p

The Meta leaned backwards while also taking a step back to avoid the slash, then levelled his bruteshot, firing a grenade before coming in with a horizontal slash against at Ragnar's midriff.

OoC: Indeed! Although one could argue that both of them are weapons in themselves.

OOC: Uh...

Ragnar chuckled as the grenade struck his breastplate and spun away, the bowel-loosening horror that would have gripped an ordinary human after such a close call finding no purchase in him. His nerves as solid as ever, he met the Meta's blade with his chainsword once again, then twisted the weapon and ran it along the length of the bruteshot, tearing towards the Meta's gauntlets in a blaze of sparks and screeching teeth.

The grenade struck Ragnar's chest and exploded, hurling the two combatants apart in a rapidly expanding cloud of shrapnel. Ragnar landed on his back several metres away with his armour scorched and pierced by shrapnel in several places. The interior of his helmet blazed red with warning runes and he coughed raggedly before swallowing a mouthful of blood. Rolling onto his side, he struggled to his feet using his chainsword as a crutch, searching for the Meta through static-riddled auto-senses to see what the grenade had done to him.

OOC: @Kirke: Oh, they certainly are. But even so, why would a human weapon attempt to beat an opponent to death with the inside of his own helmet when he has a perfectly good chainsword/bayonet to do the job instead?

OoC: They actually don't have a minimum safe distance, but are more high-explosive/kinetic than fragmentation. They have an explosive radius of around 1 - 1.5 meters. I would expect that against someone like Ragnar, they'd certainly hurt and blinding, but I doubt they could severely damage such thick armour. The Meta himself once fired a grenade at his feet when in a melee, flinging him and his opponent away. He was up moments later, but the adversary was stunned for some time before getting killed.

OOC: Seriously? That's all they do? Why have I been dodging these things the whole time...

The force of the concussion wave was enough to ruin Ragnar's equilibrium and lift him off his feet, causing him to stumble out of control as he tried to regain his feet again. The flash had little effect however, as the auto-senses in his helmet both dimmed the blinding light of the explosion and dampened the soundwaves that would have burst his eardrums otherwise. Knowing that the Meta would not be far behind he abandoned his attempts to regain his feet and let his backward momentum carry him into a more controlled combat roll. Bracing one leg behind him he was able to come out of this roll in a kneeling position, bringing his bolter up from its magnetic holster as he did so. Locking the weapon against his hip with his left hand while hanging onto his chainsword with the right, he opened fire.

The Meta came out of the explosion just moments after, giving Ragnar barely any time to recover. Ragnar did manage to send of a couple of bolter rounds, which glanced off the overshield that had been charging, bringing it down once more. The grenades exploded just behind the Meta as he cleaved downwards towards the marine's head.

OoC: Well, they are quite good at stunning. They are pretty good against shields, too, due to a weak EMP being sent out. It's used as a way to occupy the enemy while closing in to score a kill using the blade. Against a less armoured opponent it'll be supremely effective, too. The kinetic energy in them is likely enough to kill outright.

OOC: With a near to direct hit, I suppose. The blast radius that you're describing is pretty feeble. An M67 grenade has a guaranteed kill radius of 5 metres and certainty of shrapnel injuries up to 15 metres (so proclaims Wikipedia).

Ragnar threw himself sideways as the Meta attacked, trying to avoid the blow. He didn't have anywhere near enough time to get clear properly, but he did get his head out of the way so that the blade landed on his left pauldron, one of the sturdiest parts of his armour. The blade bit into the ceramite before twisting, and shaving off a slice of it, ruining the Great Company sigil on it's face as Ragnar crashed down on his side. In response, he swept his chainsword upwards to strike the Meta directly in the stomach and groin, squeezing the throttle to its maximum extent.
