So, being an avid 40k buff, and also a furious collector and general of many an army, I finally turned my eyes onto the video-game side of 40k. Which probably combined my two most-loved things in the entire world.

Turns out I was pleasantly surprised. Playing through the Dawn of War series, (Though I felt it went slightly the way of the Sims with its multitude of expansion) , it felt as if quite a decent RTS game. The cherry on top though, was definitely Dawn of War 2. Hehe awesome fun, that's all I can say... specially since they finally portrayed the races correctly! No more measly space marines XD

Anyway, I've been hearing about a new third-person game coming out linked to space marines, though, I'm not really holding my breath. Specially since they'll probably under power you as compared to a real space marine. (But if they don't, it'll be awesome =)

I've been playing that Fire Warrior game recently.

It's utterly terrible, but in an oddly enjoyable way. Like watching a panda attempt to dance.

There's a 40k MMO scheduled at some point. But I know it was confirmed a while back.
They'll have Space-Hulk style dungeons.

I think the game you are talking about is the Space Marine F/T PS (First/Third Person Shooter)

I havnt seen any news about it in a while im not sure if it was released or cancled whatever but from the video i saw of it you are basically a normal space marine going around chopping people in half blasting heads off and doing awesome chainblade combos A.K.A All the cool things you expect from 40k but up close

Yeah I remember watching that video a while ago. It looked good, although the Bolter was far too weak. I haven't heard anything more about it though, so I'm not holding my breath. Still, Prototype and Modern Warfare will keep me busy.

Under powered? are you serious? have you seen the game play? The character you play is like a Whirlwind of ass kicking

and he has a chainsaw

i actually enjoyed that game back in the day in came out, the glitches are brilliant though, being able to take down a Chaos terminator with a katana is oddly empowering

Yeah, I've heard 'bout the 40k MMO too, but that just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. How can you justify the difference between using a space marine and a guardsman? How over-powered will that be? How about different planets? Gear? The 40k universe is probably way too complicated to squeeze into an MMO. Heck, I doubt even RPGs can cover more than a small part of it.

Yes I've heard of the Space Marine game (I'm pretty sure it's actually named Space Marine. Way to go originality!) anyways it looks alright, and there has been some talk about a MMo, but nothing past basic discussion.

Edit: And I read the books and play the videogames, I never got into the models, tried a bit but I just can't get into the painting aspect, It's just too boring for me, that and I'm not particularly interested in tabletop games.

Annoying thing is I still have a few unpainted models and the gear for painting etc, and that shit is expensive.

Haha but I didn't really see the "rapid-firing gun that shoots mini-missiles" that is the bolter properly represented!

Oh. And chainsword. =)

Yeah I think THQ has the rights to the 40K mmo, but I don't think it is even being developed yet. They have it on their tentative release schedule for 2011 or some such date.

well if a proper Bolter was in the game what could beat you?
The bolter in Fire warrior was pretty sweet if only the clip wasn't so small

Things that can beat a space marine:
-other space marines
-tanks
-bigger tanks
-tau (railguns
-anything that ignores armour (eldar)

Things that can't beat space marines:
-imperial guard unless their army entirely consists of tanks

You fail to recognise that Space marines fall into the realm of "Pure Awesome" And things in this realm can never be beaten. EVER

also the Imperial Guard are awesome because they suck so bad, its a paradox

Space marines should'nt even have to bother with traitor guard, they can just backhand them, so why in the video does the space marine fire 3-4 4 round burst into a guardsman, who remains standing? 1 bolt would be enough to blow a foot wide whole in his chest

Well, I guess to include space marines in a game, it would have to be so extremely insanely epic that all our systems would die =)

Hopfully that will be fix since it is in the Alpha. And im looking for to the thrid person shooter. Wonder how it will be. As well as the MMO. Hopfully you don't have to pay for it, but if you do then im not going to buy it. I don't think it's right that you have to pay to play a game that you bought. But that is my view, so if you view that its right to pay then you go on right ahead XD.

I suppose that's because it's got a ton of awesome fluff to back up the nice visuals. But that's just my opinion.

Honestly, this is the first I've heard about a 40k MMO, and if it really happens that might become my first MMO addiction; I've got an account for WoW, but I play it maybe one month each year or so. Anyways, you don't necessarily have to include Space Marines as a playable faction to make the game work, normal humans can wear awesome power armor, too - you could go with the 'Dark Heresy' approach and let the player start as, say, an acolyte of the Inquisition; there are enough sub-factions whose members don't rank as uber-awesome from the get-go.

One thing I DO wonder about is how they'd solve the problem of (warp) travel. W40k is (imo) what it is because you're not limited to one world as opposed to most fantasy stuff. This would be especially important because some factions are restricted to particular corners of the intergalactic map, and there are some key locations which would make for particularly interesting MMO gaming, such as some of the forge worlds, the area around the Eye of Terror, huge hive worlds like Meridian to incorporate the society and trade aspects and maybe some of the Space Marine chapter homeworlds (for example, including a world like Fenris would also add another feral world to the list, a good place to level up by slaying Wulfen and ice beasts).
