They already did, it was called Fire Warrior, I think it's in the bargain bin for PS2 Xbox and PC, it wasn't very good, tried too hard to beat Republic Commando for sheer awesomeness and failed.
I quite liked fire warrior. Not sure how it tried to rip-off republic commando.
Wasn't there already a space marine fps? Didn't you play as a terminator or something?
Fire warrior was based as playing a Tau, on some initiation mission or something, it goes pete tong, and your left to fight your way through pretty much every race in the series to get an elder or spiritual leader back or something, I got as far as the space marine cruiser or something and got bored.

haha so make CoD 4 but with 40k armies?

There is a third person Space Marine game coming out though that looks freaking awesome
Yeah, I've seen a trailer on Youtube, it looks AMAAZZIINNGGG

Also, the topic game sounds good, but will each campaign be like a full version, or a short 4-5hr experience?

I'm sure millions of other people had this (absolutly unique......) idea, the problem is that it is much harder to create a whole game than write 10 sentences.

Firewarrior made no sense whatsoever. A single Tau defeating hundreds of Ultramarines and Chaos Marines? Yeah... RIGHT. :p

And Space Hulk is not an FPS, it's torture.

yeah unique ideas all based off COD4 :p
anyway, imperial guard could be based on COD4, but I would Eldar like crysis, because they actually have suits that adapt, Space Marines more like in the Halo direction, because they can just absorb damage.
Tyranids should have a real nasty close combat attack, and make them fast.
Orks are supposed to be slow, but with some kind of special ability that they can't shoot, but will move faster.
Chaos marines just like marines, but with a ability to choose which god you can worship, and adjust strengths and weaknesses accordingly.
grey knights should be slow, tough, and choppy in close combat.
sister of battle can be medium speed, not really tough, but can shoot real good, and can choose to increase rate of fire, or strengths of shots, accuracy etc etc.
tau can be slow, and really shooty, with a long range, and good accuracy and strength, just not a lot of shots.
necrons should be the real damage takers in the game, all that they can really do is bite bullets.
for dark eldar it would be real nice to have a fast movement, and maybe a drug ability

that's all I can think of right now, this is just what I think would be the a awesome game.
maybe do PVP multiplayer just like normal, all characters the same statistics, and do a gametype where a few players are pushed into a dungeon where they have to team up to try and get to the end, and all the characters are different.

Yeah it didn't make much sense that
You were able to take down a chaos titan on your own or that the space marines were so pleasant to you after you killed a dozen of their comrades
But it was still a reasonably good fps and the weapons were fairly fun to use.

The weapon you mean... remember you had to carry your empty (scarce ammo) Tau gun around and you had only 2 weapon slots!

Didn't you lose that for a minigun halfway through? I agree that the weapons slots were a bit limited but since at anytime there was likely to be only one weapon you could find enough ammo for it was too crippling (e.g bolters on the ship, that's about the only weapon you could find). Anyway I thought the tau weapons were more fun so maybe that's why I didn't mind it too much (although since I liked those weapons it's indeed a pity they didn't put more ammo for them in the levels).

With a 40k FPS it would be hard to capture the main concept of nids, guard and orks. Playing a fps where you are cannon fodder would suck becasue your supposed to die. But if you survived a whole campaign it would be unrealistic. Guard tank commander would make a good FPS though, crushing stuff in either a leman russ or a baneblade would be awesome.

Where's the Dark Eldar on the list? Would love to see a game about them
I couldn't think of a unique campaign for them
Dark Eldar'd be easy - Stealth based game where you play as a Mandrake, and are given targets to assassinate but during the maelstrom of a war. A large battlefield, like a city, a set number of targets, and the order in which you kill them should have an effect on how the enemy army acts.

Alternatively, a game as a Wych would be God of War but slightly more gory, and with combat drugs, while a game as a Haemonculus would be more along the lines of kill and mutate the enemy to fight for you.

Or maybe not, that's just my idea.
Yes but I never knew much about the dark eldar

and MORE gorey than God of War? You mean like if you poke them their intestines fall out and proceed to strangle them while ripping off they're arms?

It could be like SW Battlefront which was great after you kill a certain number of enemies you can chose to be a better one

FPS? I want a action and adventure with FPS and RPG elements. Also 1 guardsmen surviving a campaign is like a blind man head-shotting a invisible man. And if one did come out I hope it gets the "Most Gorey Game Of The Year" Chainsaws I tell you, chainsaws.

But the point of Guard is to die not live and rank up.

Yes - much more gory than God of War. I mean, let's face it, God of War'd be classed as tame next to the horrors of the Warhammer 40000 universe, and the Dark Eldar are probably one of the worst of all the races when it comes to killing people and using their organs as Christmas decorations. They have subsects entirely devoted to the art of killing and pain, so naturally it'd be more gory than God of War.

as long as it wasn't a major selling point

A major selling point? The whole of the Warhammer 40000 universe is centered around eternal war, a war which no single faction can possibly win, factions which include barbaric bloodthirsty space pirates, witch hunters, a violent inquisition, ritual sacrifice to appease an undead overlord and four evil gods which represent murder, mutation, plague and perversion, and you think the gore wouldn't be part of the major selling points?

Apart from the playing as your favourite factions, the gore and war would be the main thing to draw in people who don't play Warhammer 40000, and there's not really another way to sell Warhammer 40000 as anything but that to people who don't play, really, is there?

That is sadly, a big rumor that got started. True, it's an IDEA, but whether it was picked up or not is remain to be seen.

That video we all saw has been officially announced as a mod a developer made that basically just 40K skins over a copy of Gears of War/2. So, in basic, in was just to get the creative juices flowing.

There IS a Tau FPS out, you know this right? It's called Fire Warrior, and it came out for the PS2.

A spoiler-free warning: It bends the cannon over and rapes it. Without lube.

A single Fire Warrior manages to take out a handfull of Dark Angels, Chaos Space Marines, wave upon wave of Imperials, three Demon Princes and a motherfucking Titan. Most never speak of this games' existence because of this.
