Warhammer 40k: Table-Top or Video Game

Im just wondering if theres still some true 40k supporters out there who enjoy the table-top wargame.

I have always enjoyed the 40k franchise, But the original has always been at the top of my list. You may rather click on a mouse button to order your Blood Ravens Space marine squad into a battle formation against the Dreaded Tyranid hordes. I prefer to charge my Red Thirsted Blood Angel Tactical Squad with a heavy bolter and a rocket launcher (Costing: 110 points) at a squad of 15 Hormaguants to lock in combat so that unless those Genestealer 20 inches away wants to Shoot me with his poison cannons, he's gonna have to go through my Baal-Predator with A flamestorm Cannon and side sponsons with Heavy flamers (Costing: 140 points).

Thats all im going to say on the matter, Offer up your opinions, Hopefully there is still some true 40k players out there

Genestealers can't shoot anything guy, they have BS 0. Also you calculated the points on that Tactical Squad wrong, you would only have 5 models for that 90 points and you need 10 Marines (which are 16 points per additional model) in that Squad to be able to take a heavy weapon, also you can't have both a heavy bolter and rocket launcher in one squad. So for 170 points you would have a sqaud of 10 marines with a flamer and either a rocket launcher, multi melta, or heavy bolter (assuming you take those because they are free.)

But back onto the topic I play both the tabletop game and the videgames. I prefer the tabletop game though. I have a lot of fun with the building and painting of the models. Also the playstyle of the tabletop game appeals to me more.

Over the years:

-I've read nearly every book published by the black library and read all the codexes and rule books from cover to cover for the stories.

-I occasionally participate in lore discussions and occasionally browse 40k forums.

-I love all the memes that /tg/ and others have produced (creed, cultist chan, justasplanned eldrad/tzeentch).

-I've played and owned nearly every video game that they have produced (dawn of war, space hulk, etc)

-I've read lots of warhammer fantasy books, I've read all the warhammer fantasy lore I can find, I've read all the fantasy codexes and rule books.

-I've read Bloodbowl, Mordheim, Necromunda, Gorkamorka, Epic, battlefleet gothic, dungeonball books and rulesbooks.

-I've bought and read hundreds of comics.

-I've read a large number of White Dwarf magazines



and yet I don't like the board game itself for various reasons. (shop regulars in my town having bad hygiene, the shop in my town being widely despised, rules too easily and too frequently abused, etc)

I guess I'm just not a true enough 40k supporter for you?

Yeah that sort of thing happens to all of us sometimes. Once I was planning out a list and I messed up the math somewhere so I accidentally cheated myself out of about 150 points. I caught that when I looked over it a second time haha.

I have neither the disposable income nor the patience and skill required to purchase and assemble/paint an army of figurines which might as well be made out of solid gold for how much they cost, and being first and foremost a lore junkie at heart the rules for the table top game themselves are off-putting to me because I know they're abstractions intended to create a "balanced" game (when in 'reality' the respective factions have vastly disparate power levels).

So I stick to the fiction, the roleplaying systems, and video games - it's way cheaper, gets me the all important 40K fix, and doesn't require me to be and think like a hobbyist, who I believe are generally crazy (sometimes awesome, but definitely crazy).

I played two games today, I use the Eldar as my army I play just about one game a week on average due to a new store opening in my town which my friends work out + mini tournaments.

....Except my Zoanthrope (80 points)'s Warp Blast knifes through your Predator like it isn't even there, meanwhile the Hive Tyrant (180 points) is using Catalyst to make the 'Gaunts (120 points) twice as dangerous and the Rippers (50 points) are rushing your command squad to keep them busy so the Genestealers (288 points) can rip them apart a turn or two later.

I'm a 'Nid player from way back. Now I play Warmachine because it's so much better. It's what 40k should have been. I also played Dawn of War I/II and there is definitely something to be said for models that move and make dice rolls on their own.

Haven't played the tabletop version, but to be honest, i really really REALLY want to have a gander at it. The problem? The price. Holy shit are those thingies expensive as hell. Especially at my country( you know, one of those crappier EU countries where the pay is low and no-one knows the country exists).
But I have played the computer games (well, DoW1, at least), but i do like the series quite a lot.

Mephiston (225 points) Jumps the Hive Tyrant then slices him in two with his force sword, Then My Loaded up Death Company (around 205 points) with Lemartes (150 points) Charges at your Genestealers, Making A Nice 'Nid Stew. Your Zoanthrope is taken down by a fleeing group of Assault Marines, even when they are scared, they are epic! And Finally to your ripper-kebabs, Baal-Predator, work it out yourself

The Warhammer 40k universe seems awesome. If any of the video games had large-scale battles (and weren't bolted down by Games for Windows Live), I'd buy them. As for the board game, I'm gonna need a better paying job and more social skills before trying it.

I was going to pick up on those errors, too, but got beaten to the punch, by the looks of things. You can't get two heavy weapons in a Tac-squad... fourth ed didn't let you do it either. *shrug*

I can't for the life of me remember what it is (Swarmlord... maybe?), but I know there's a Tyranid that can (vanilla) kick Mephiston's arse in CC. Anyway, you do realise that with what you've provided, you're going to have very few scoring units and little vehicle takedown? Also, charging Genestealers with Death Company is a waste of the Death Company. Rending attacks are going to ruin their shit, plus they're hitting on 3+, so you're better off horde hunting with the DC and just shooting the crap out of the Genestealers, 'cos 5+ is useless against every weapon the Marines have.

Anyway, what's your full list? We can compare notes.

Some advice: never bother loading up a Death Company, they'll be able to survive a couple rounds of shooting then start mullering people apart in CC. Bullet magnet was never more applicable than to the DC. I take 5DC with nothing except jump packs 165pts, with terminators on the other end of the battle line, really scares my opponent.

Concerning The Swarmlord: Yeah The Swarmlord is one of those Unfairly overpowered guys, like the Nightbringer. But like the Nightbringer , Hes got one Impossibly idiotic Weakness that really makes his Value Drop. For Him, He moves 6 inches a turn!

Concerning Charging the death company: Like I said, even Looking at 'Nids gives me a headache

Think I got Dawn of War before I started playing the table top but I still enjoy a good tabletop game when I can find the opponent. Just need to finish painting my army, or badger someone else into it

I never really got massively into the table-top aspect of gamesworkshop, but I really enjoyed the modelling and collecting part. I used to build, paint and display my models, I had bits of bobs from fantasy, 40k and LOTR, even some battlefleet here and there. I just found it a good way to relax, and spend hours and hours painting a single model to get it perfect

Sometimes swap out one 220pt Wytch squad for a Warrior squad /w splintercannon in a Raider with splinter racks and night shields; the spare points from this go to the Wytches, giving them haywire grenades.

I used to play the game, but after third edition I found there was a little too much it-doesn't-really-matter-how-you-move-your-little-people-around-just-fill-this-bucket-with-dice-and-throw-them-on-the-table. Still an improvement over second edition as far as I can gather (I owned it as a kid but never played it, and there seems to be a horrific amount of bookkeeping), but it's not a patch on their smaller-scale games like Necromunda, Mordheim or Blood Bowl. Well, Necromunda is a pretty poorly thrown-together set of rules, but it's fun. I made a series of sweeping changes to bring certain strategies in line and it all seems to work out pretty well.

Eldar, by the way. I'm also in favour of Tyranids. And Humans in Blood Bowl, Van Saar in Necromunda and Middenheim in Mordheim. Since you were interested.

40k was a pen and paper RPG before it was a table-top game, so you might want to re-define true...

OT: I gave up table-top wargaming nearly 15 years ago, but I must admit I played Dawn of War at a friend's house a while back and it was like visiting a long lost friend; albeit that slightly weird friend you have to stick up for a lot in pubs.

I have Ork armies for Fantasy and 40K. I have to admit I feel very guilty because I kind of have given up but I still have two massive armies filling up an entire table and bookshelf. I still love the Dawn of War series and will probably get Space Marine when it comes out and I still subscribe to Warhammer's magazine, White Dwarf which still provides a good read.
