I'm the minority, Jack and Zaeed are my favorite characters. I lost no one without using a guide. This is why. The game hints at you constantly, particularly through Jacob that you need to upgrade the ship and get loyalty for people to survive, I did all of that, I also took the hint with not diving straight into the Reaper IFF giving me time to, which was lucky or I would have lost the crew. Providing you manage with that, the rest is pretty basic, you need a leader, you can send the same person twice, any leader in the little dossier that pops up when you are asked to pick works, Miranda is an easy choice. Tali is the obvious choice for tech, Samara/Morinth or Jack for Biotics are both are powerful biotic users (I think I used Samara) and as far as the final stand and escort go. Well leave Grunt and some leaders behind like Garrus as they are the most likely to survive, and use someone that isn't highly important to escort the crew, I used Mordin, as I don't like his playstyle, but everyone that isn't a badass with a big gun will do.

Nobody died on my playthrough since it was ridiculously transparent and I completed all the competence missions so all my team were competent (I dont find loyalty fits, since the only time their "loyalty" was tested was in arguments that were decided by if I had enough "naughty" or "nice" points.)

What happened though? Besides being underwhelmed by everything bar the tackyness of the games climax, I found myself thinking how much of it all had been a huge waste of time.

All I really needed was Miranda for the Lazarus plothole (well, more a piece of narrative laziness and a cheap reset, but who cares) and Mordin for the seeker swarm plothole (which definitely is one). Then I just needed Legion for the tech role, and Samara for the Biotic, and small squad of those huge mechs from the game.

Most of the squad were so useless and interchangeable I found myself thinking they were only recruited for the sake of recruiting. Maybe Cerberus just like blowing money away.

I literally felt the ME1 team were a) actually a team, b) actually accomplished much more, and c) were far more capable. I found the "suicide squad made up of the best" to be ridiculously overrated since all about 75% of the squad did was keep a load of the collector mooks busy. I bought the marketing spiel about them being the best in the galaxy because I thought they would prove it in game, but none of them did. Ultimately I suppose the overrated squad just fits with the cobbled together and over-the-top and stupid nature of most of the rest of the game sadly.

Heres to hoping I get to assemable a new, REAL squad in ME3 again, preferably featuring Liara, Ash/Kai and Wrex along with a few others, and they actually function and gel together, and also interact more than just two instances of bitching like in ME2.

Im re-doing from a checkpoint and Miranda and Jack had an argument. First time I sided with Jack, but she died, so I sided with Miranda. I didnt have enough paragon points see. However I have upgraded the ship to its full potential, Just mined for ages. The only problem I have is with the vents in the infiltration bit. Should I use Tali again and risk her getting blown up to the head or use Legion.

Got into the base safely. Send Tali through the vents, and garrus to lead the other group. It all goes well, then Tali dies, when we meet up with Garrus, and try to close the door. Then I leave Garrus and the others to hold the door while I go fight me some Collectors (Oh, and the reaper too. Can't forget that one.). I save the technology of the reaper for the Illusive man, survive the explosion, but apparently Kasumi dies.

That shouldn't happen unless they're not loyal...

Strange. I had done everyone's loyality quests.

First playthrough: Everyone lived
Second playthrough: I skimped on the multicore shielding and Kasumi got fried, and deliberately got Jacob killed as Tech Specialist.

Kasumi i just hired having already completed the game (Arguably the easiest job in the world until ME3 then...) On my first playthrough Mordin died from the "Hold the line" situation, because i had no idea he had such little chance of survival, so i decided that i was going to play again as renegade, which i did (now with Zaeed) and got everyone through it.

After downloading Kasumi, Overlord, LOTSB, and multiple appearance+ weapons packs...i realised i'd traded ME2 in two months previous to pay towards more Microsoft points just to keep them at a healthy number. I do believe that smacks both of irony and stupidity. Looks like GAME are about to get another £5-£10 off me for feck all.

Did you:
a) Give evidence of Rael'Zorah's experiments to the Admiralty Board against Tali's wishes, or
b) Side with Legion during he and Tali's argument, without using a Paragon/Renegade option?

Either of those could result in you not having Tali's loyalty despite doing her loyality mission.

my first experience was losing Garrus to Miranda's shotty biotic bubble, and then Grunt failed to lead the second fire squad with the might of all the krogan warlords and died.

Everyone else lived.

Miranda was the only one on mine. I could have chose the paragon option in the argument between her and Jack but she was being a douche. I didn't like her. And I don't understand the Jack hate going on. She was awesome (and my LI).

I lost Jack, everyone else made it (even Tali though I would gladly let Tali die to save Jack).

B only happens if both are loyal, because you did A Tali was never Loyal in the first place.

There you go then. Tali wasn't loyal. Use Legion or Kasumi.
