Gee, never seen a thread like this before.

Have I played any of the Max Payne games? No. Have I played disappointing sequels? Yes. Can I nominate the most dissapointing sequels I've played? Well, not that you asked, but okay:

-Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight
-Halo 4
-Soul Calibur IV
-Star Fox Command

(Seriously, what is it with 4's and disappointment?)

Contenders for Most disappointing sequels:

-Final Fantasy 13
Nitpicking, but does FF13 really count as a sequel per se? Like, can any FF game since unless you're dealing with something like X-2, none of them share continuity? I know, game mechanics, numbers, etc., but still, it's like me calling Days of Ruin a sequel to Dual Strike. They're so far removed mechanically and narratively that I can't really call it a sequel.

-Metal Gear Solid 4 and 5
Probably detailed this elsewhere, but what's disappointing about 4?

(Yes, I recognise the irony that I was asking about 4's and disappointment earlier.)

-Fallout 76
Sequels, not prequels. Otherwise, I'll raise you a Perfect Dark Zero.

MP2 has a few flaws, but it's hardly a terrible sequel or MP game, even if I happen to like the first one better.
But in MP2 you have to play as a guuuuuuuuurl! Doesn't that make you want to scream and run into the hills all but ready to poke your eyes out and slit your wrists?

It's been a long time but I remember 2 being better than 1.

Mostly because it did not have crazed drug trips with the sound of wailing babies.

thats not the reason. even if you dont play as mona. i would still consider MP2 as worst.

beside

Max payne 3 Last mission set in Airport is easily the best level in entire series..

compare to MP2 last chapter

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly79U0tCuus

MP2 definitely fall flat. I even prefer finale of 3 over original.

Airport shootout is easily best level of entire series.

theres lot and lot of reasons why MP2 is blacksheep of series. no wonder it was commercial failure.

I was using the generalized "Sequel" as in "Any game in a series not the original", so MGS3 would count as a sequel despite taking place first in the timeline. Especially since there weren't any ground rules set on "Sequel" to begin with in this thread.

As for MGS4, it's biggest flaw is that it has a ton of exposition and cut-scenes but uses them to say very little, while throwing a hefty amount of technobabble involving "NANOMACHINES, Son" in the air to explain everything, along with a ton of retconning(not that retconning was new for the series by any means). MGS5 would repeat the NANOMACHINES sin with PARASITES and it was even less amusing there, since at least NANOMACHINES was good for some funny memes(such as that video with every single "NANOMACHINES" in the game cut and pasted together just to show how much Kojima leaned on it). Considering the big selling point of MGS4 was to wrap up all the plot threads up to that point, the fact it screws up on the presentation front on such a frequent basis is a fairly big sin, which is a shame because there are a number of good points as far as gameplay goes(the fight with ocelot at the end made up for a lot of Act 5 that preceded it). It also proved Kojima works best when he has an editor keeping him in check and not letting his wierd impulses run wild, or at least when he has the self restraint to keep things tight and not blather on all fucking day.

I can only imagine what kind of train wreck Death Stranding is going to be.

I keep forgetting the fucking nightmare sequences in MP1. I think because I tend to block them out when I think about the game.

And you didn't even mention Gears of War 4; impressive!

Sonic 4 was also a heaping serving of shite (not that it was the fourth Sonic game in any meaningful sense) and I found Splinter Cell 4 (Double Agent) very difficult to love. Mortal Kombat 4 was a mostly forgotten, fumbling attempt at bringing the franchise into 3D, Soul Calibur 4 was an overblown failure, Dead or Alive 4 is famous as the one that long-time fans of the series gave a miss. Die Hard 4.0 was diabolical, Alien Resurrection was disappointing, Terminator 4 was an absolute insult.

Yeah, something about the number 4.

(Thunder Force 4, Phantasy Star 4 and Elder Scrolls: Oblivion were good though)

Ah yes, Sonic, the king of the disappointing shitty sequel. Probably over 50 games in the franchise and like 10 of them are generally considered good. The rest range from just mediocre to legendarily bad.

We're talking about this in a world where Actraiser 2 exists?
Look who created the thread. That should tell you the level we're dealing with here.
There are no such things as platformers or city management games. Let alone a 'game' that combines both.

Also, since Actraiser 2 was only half a game at best, clearly its the winner

Wfit: I dont think we mentioned it. And it's a game that B-Cell would think is a game. Duke Nuken Forever

Also, upon rechecking the thread, I noticed this. Invisible War, Fear 2, Crysis 2 were only bad compared to it predecessors. They are fine to good game in their own right but will always be compared to the great game that came before. All ME sequels have the same issue too

...because I didn't find it disappointing?

I mean, okay, it's not up to snuff with the first two games, but it's an improvement over 3 and Judgement.

Dead or Alive 4 is famous as the one that long-time fans of the series gave a miss.
But I liked DOA4. :(

Granted, it's the only DOA game I've played, so...

Terminator 4 was an absolute insult.
Da fuq?

Let me remind you that this is a franchise where stuff like Terminator 3 and Sarah Connor Chronicles exist.

Passos can suck it.
Can you even describe Passos with more than: "He's Max's friend...
...but turns out to be a bad guy all along."?
Mona and Max atleast had some established history behind them. And the whole romance element wasn't bad at all, as far as video game examples go, even if a noir cliche.

Final Fantasy X-2 (actually, prettymuch any of the sequel games or the spin offs have been kind of crud)

Zelda 2

Perfect Dark Zero

Ultima 9

Heroes of Might and Magic 4 (and I forget if 6 or 7 was the next awful one)

new Thief, if we count that.

Soulcalibur 4

I'll defend HoMM4. It's very different and that annoyed people. But I dont mind different.

GoW2 was pretty bad. Giant worms and stupid plan at the end. Their race deserved not to survive after that nonsense

Passos did work for branco but in the end he save Max.

Mona did betray Max then is killed by vlad.
