Well, yeah, the real question is why there was gunplay in this game at all. We've got plenty of third-person shooters, including sandbox ones. What we don't have is a bunch of AAA sandbox games where the core mechanic is non-violent.

they probably do that because they are afraid that it will get boring. a lot more variation would have to be included to make sure no one's bored if there is no shooting [which is a jack of all trades form of entertainment].
OT, i do think the last of us looks better, i just hope that the gameplay isnt heavily scripted. an intelligent game that has dynamic, realistic fistfights would be beyond amazing.

I have the same problem with people who complain about "brown and grey" shooters and "generic fantasy" RPGs.

Same thing. "Brown and grey" shooters always have similar gameplay and generic fantasy titles have that Holy Trinity thing. They aren't exactly the genre with the most innovation.

It looks like an interesting take on a stagnant genre (The realistic shooter).

Dude, if you are going to use the term, then make sure you get the games right. SWAT, Ghost Recon/Rainbow Six (the early titles), Operation Flashpoint, ARMA, etc is what you call a realistic shooter.

think about this, your character his tasked with killing this dude. you hack the traffic lights so he's involved in a collision hoping it will kill him (make it look like an accident) however you didnt take into consideration his goons are following him a few cars being. now they get out their cars and recognise you so they instantly (and rightly so) start shooting. your character has a gun, are you not going to shoot them?

Cover-based shooting as implemented in 90% of cover-based shooters is a terrible combat system, and there are more interesting ways they could have taken this than yet another assassination game.

i think cover based is a good method (if done well) i suppose you have your own opinion and i respect that

i love MGS4 as a stealth game (albeit not as challenging as its forefathers) but it also gives you options to play as a cover based shooter and i like that. A lot of players new to MGS will get caught a lot hell even us MGS vets get caught a lot and sometimes gunning is the best way out. the thing is that it gives you that option and i suppose thats why i like the look of this game it looks all sneaky sneaky but gives you other options if you want

i see what you mean about how it couldve been different to the whole assassin thing but it seems to fit really well, what i find lacking in many stealth games is that you dont get the option to plan ahead, in this you have the mobile app where you can plan your mission on your lunch break at work you know read the blueprints, track guard movements so when you get home all the intel is there so you can complete the stealthiest runthrough possible (that is until your buddy at work tells you another way).

off topic but cool: a good multiplayer mode would be to put 10 players in the city (5 teams of 2) each team has to eliminate another team whilst trying not to be eliminated by the team after them. each team has full use of CTOS to find their targets and remain hidden from the team hunting them

Honestly, the cynical side of me thinks there might of been some fakery, thought the same thing with "The Last of Us" footage, but if it actually looks that could when it's released then hell yeah that'll be a must buy.

I am looking forward to it. I wonder if hacking will allow players to get out of a potential combat situation or finish a mission differently. I would also like to see a good number of side-quests in the game as well.

The fact that they give you the choice of tossing a man out of his car so that he doesn't get himself killed in your gunfight adds a minor layer of developer awareness that excuses whatever misgivings you have over "generic" gunfights which, while played out in your perception of games, is probably still fun to play anyway.

Besides, I bet there's a significantly less violent and disruptive way to take your target down if you think things through and jump him after he parks his car rather than opt for the tragic ten car pileup that immediately attracts the attention of the police.

On the other hand, it's not nearly as badass in a trailer...

Fucking loved it. If the developers can actually pull off what the trailers were advertising, essential a game where you can manipulate any all electronic objects to your whims, then I think we have a GOTY on our hands. Sadly, only time will tell.

that's what i'm thinking they're doing, and will be necessary for it to be successful. if there is only a handful of useful hacks, it won't be impressive. however, i noticed in the gameplay footage a few available hacks that seemed interesting. one was the digital clock tower thing on the street corner. even if it's just for playing around, if you could hack it to display something obscene, or threaten a target that walking down the street to spook them, that would be awesome.

the other thing i saw available for hacking was "Control Train" that would be fun too, smashing the train into another one, or making it go so fast to derail.

my main point i guess is that hacking the world should definitely be fun and usable during free roam rampages and walkabouts.

To be fair, with Assassin's Creed Ubisoft announced way before the first game was even released that they were going to franchise the shit out of it. But back then we were still too capitivated with what was then extremely innovating gameplay to let that announcement sink in.

The complaint they have has zero to do with realism. They just think that it's become a boring mechanic. I too am a little bummed that the intriguing hacking and environment manipulation gameplay will most likely often devolve into basic cover shooting.

Nobody ever suggested that the main character becomes a standing bullet sponge, that assumption is on you. They just lament the descent from crafty use of the world and people around you to finishing the job with generic action.

So you have effectively 2 sides of a coin.

The point that people complain about and what I hate, is that you can't just duck and move behind cover, no, we're clearly all too stupid to do that ourselves. We need to press a button that activates some sort of local gravity field from the nearest chest high object and sucks you against it, glued alongside it unless you break yourself free again.

God help us if we ever considered just running up to something and ducking, that's clearly a silly idea.

Looks amazing. The premise and aesthetic both remind me of Assassin's Creed, and this is Ubisoft Montreal, so I'm calling it now: I bet that at some point, there will be a big twist revealing this to be set in the AC universe. I'm not sure why, it just seems to fit.
