As long as the gameplay doesn't get noticeably effected by how outdated the 360 is i don't really care if they try to extend its life really...

Aesthetics > Graphics after all

Man I hope we don't start the new generation just yet; we haven't seen the best the PS3 could do. =< I am curious as to what the kind gentleman means when he says the 360 still has some untapped potential in it, though.

"Stronger" consoles doesn't mean better graphics only. There is much more to games than graphics.
The xBox is weak and there is no way around it. I don't really care about the graphics, as long as the aesthetic is well done. But I do think that the current gen consoles lack memory. Just look at all this games. The world are small. Any bigger OPEN world will lag. If the game is a big open world, it will either lag, or have lower settings and look worse.

Developer have to "sacrifice" to much to get games running smoothly. CoD developers are bragging that they somehow managed to cut so many corners that their game can run on 60fps. That's enough to see how weak the consoles are. Instead of trowing 80% of the budget into optimizing the game to run on ancient consoles, they could have used 20% of it into optimizing and the rest in creating something good.

I'm not saying that optimizing is unimportant. Contrary, I think it is indeed important. The problem is that after some point, optimizing isn't possible in reasonable time with a reasonable budget. It's not liner, but exponential.

(youtube tags aren't working for some reason. :S)

This is a tech demo. Not prerendered.
You can't find anything even close to this in current generation.

Oh hey look, the self proclaimed "Tony Stark of Video Games" is opening is flapper again. Gonna go pretend I care elsewhere. 6 year hardware needs to die, not get another 10 years of second rate uninspired junk. How about some push for real innovation rather than polishing a what is now a turd in terms of hardware specs. That is what the real Tony Stark would do. Clown.
Oooh, such strong feelings of hatred! Sounds like someone is heading for the dark side. If you're only pretending to care, why are you here in the first place? Clown.

I've never really got all the hate for this Cliff Bleszinski fellow (I'm guessing the reason people would quote would be something along the lines of "like, you know, stuff" before they go back for another episode of MLP) - I guess there's just got to be someone you think it's cool to dislike.

I can't really blame game devs (and the console manufacturers) for wanting to spin out the lifespan of the current gen of consoles. Seems it's quite an expensive business, designing consoles and developing games for them these days - nothing wrong with trying to economise a bit, I say.
Dark side it is for me then. Cliffy Clown is a joke, a jerk, and deserves the hate he gets. The guy is one of the biggest driving forces behind Epic's back turning from the PC platform, and is helping to pioneer a generation of stale, repetitive cash cow game development on console platforms today. My post wasn't about console manufacturers, because it makes sense for them to push a product, but the historical significance Epic has had on gaming has been pissed on and forgotten in favor of a quick buck. His statement only personifies that stance.

Economizing is one thing, being careless about it is another. UE3 engine is a blight on development and hardware and is middle-ware of choice for lazy devs, and Epic's support for it is laughable as it has been pointed out in this thread already. Not one good thing has come from him except for his ability to make Epic and Microsoft money while alienating the fan base that made them. His attitude and self idolizing personality doesn't gain him respect.

Call me a PC elitist if that is what you read from my comments here, but the reality is his and Epics actions and comments like this are everything that is wrong with gaming and it's current beta release, launch day patch, day one DLC, terrible ports, and other bullshit state.

Okay, this shit pisses me off. He's absolutely totally right. I hated Gears of War but goddamnit, every account i see is that Cliffy B is actually smart and cares a lot about the status of the medium as a whole, so i have qualms about making a review about Gears of War. Goddamnit Cliffy B, if you're going to make a bad game stop being a decent human being!!

I kid. Like i said, he's right, there is plenty of life in the 360, and right now development tools still haven't caught up to the current hardware standard, so i'd hold off for a while longer until it's easier for smaller studios to publish games.

thing is there is a new console coming out next year, and that is the wiiu, which will be better than both the xbox and ps3, so it would be bad for both sony and microsoft to not come out with new consoles soonish.

clinging to 6 year old hardware and saying "good 'nuff" is like driving a car held together by duct tape and prayers

sure, it may get the job done, but if it's time has come, let it go on a more positive note instead of replacing it when cell phones have more processing power

Wasn't there an article on this very subject a few weeks ago? A dev (Id taking about Rage I think) were stating that having to trick the system was creating to much work and eating up development time they could be putting to better use.

is frame rate issues down to graphics or memory?
so long as the next gen can cope with that, i dont care too much about graphical or other improvements

This is just retarded. Seriously. It doesn't take that much logic to understand that the hundreds of thousands of dollars developers push into optimizing games for hardware six years outdated could be spent optimizing a game for up to date hardware, with far better results.

I think consoles have real trouble with shadows at the moment. I was playing Uncharted 3 the other day, and it looks amazing until you see the edges of a shadoe up close. They have really jagged edges and don't look that great at all. Also, we need hardware that is actually capable of running four player splitscreen on consoles.

We're at the end of this console generation and we need new hardware so that progress can be made. Old console hardware is holding us back. Or least make console gaming as much fun as it used to be.

*Looks at how Oblivion looks on 360, looks at how Skyrim will look on 360, hopes for great new games in the next few years. We don't need anything new yet.

Well, that's what I hope to be thinking after another few days.
Eh, I heard Oblivion was only allowed to run on one core and current games have access to all three cores. Plus, Skyrim doesn't look all that impressive and still runs at the standard 720p 30 fps.
Looks impressive to me. As long as it doesn't run as crappy (horrible frame rate slowdown) as Dark Soul's, I'll be happy.

*fingers crossed
Actually looks pretty ugly to me. Especially interiors. Yuck. Hoping the PC version is cleaned up at least a little, although 1080p + 8XMSAA will help a lot.
Now that I have played the game for a few hours, all I have to say is: We have different ideas of what looks 'pretty ugly'. I see pretty, while you see ugly. I feel sorry for you if you can't enjoy this game because of how it looks. If your PC version (that gives the devs a headache, lol) doesn't look a lot better, then I really pity you. I'd bet a dollar that it looks a lot better tho...

Either way, cheers! Skyrim is fucking great so far! I hope you don't think 'yuck' while playing... that would suck.
Just because it looks ugly doesn't mean I can't enjoy it :p
