Maybe it means PS3 will FINALLY get that 4D gaming Sony was bragging about at E3.

Man, I sound like a Sony Fanboy saying this, but they really do have a 10 year life on their products (If it doesn't fall apart first, lololololol). In the case of the PS3 though, they aren't really hinting at all that, like the PS1 and 2, there will be a successor out within 5 years.

While yes, Sony DID state the PS3 would be a 10 year console - they compared it to the PS2 and how it had a fairly good life from 2000 to 2010... but the PS3 was released in 2006. Sony seems to run the "10 year Lifetime" overlapping each other.

So Sony COULD continue to support PS3 right through 2016, but that doesn't mean they have to wait till 2016 to release their next console.

E3 could announce new hardware up to a year in advance for a November 2011 release which would be a whole 5 years since Sony's last full new console release. 2011 would also be the 6th year since this generation started. I mean if we take the Dreamcast launch as the beginning of the 6th gen, it ended with the Xbox 360's release in 2005 that's 6 years. 5th gen was shorter and 4th gen shorter still.

Maybe Sony wants to get a leg up on the competition and start the new generation before anybody else. It's pretty obvious the advantages of being the first off the starting blocks.

So it is not at all impossible and I'd say it's highly probable that the next generation of hardware is announced though we may not actually get our hands on it for 18 months or so.

yep, they said 10 years lifetime of use, not "hand on heart, we promise no new console from us till 2016"

If anybody DID hear that, then that's wishful thinking and would be suicide for Sony if their competitors knew they would be a sitting target for a DECADE! that's too long to stand still.

This actually makes perfect sense. It just might explain why Gran Turismo 5 is taking SO GODDAMN LONG.

Weird Sony Viral Video Teasing PS4?

An odd viral video has hit the net that includes a tease for the "PS4."

Is Sony going to announce the PlayStation 4 soon? I'm going with no, considering how the company has stated that the PlayStation 3's life isn't even half over yet, but a very strange viral video has emerged that alludes to something called "PS4 V3.1."

The video opens in a mysterious facility in Tokyo. Japanese actors appear to be very disturbed about something. One is holding files and a walkie-talkie. One is very polite and doesn't forget to knock before entering a room. Another is wearing a lab coat and appears to be very confused.

The video takes viewers into an area where an experiment is being performed. Monitors and television sets display the Sony PlayStation logo. A man is laying on the floor motionless wearing some sort of glasses and tightly gripping what looks like a PlayStation 3 controller. He has an awfully high-pitched and creepy laugh. It ends with a screen that says "PS4 V3.1 - Please Wait A Moment."

Because this simply can't mean that Sony is announcing the PlayStation 4, we'll have to take the glasses on the crazy man as an obvious reference to Sony's future implementation of 3D in PlayStation 3 games, which will require the use of 3D glasses. As for what PS4 V3.1 means, it's probably a way for Sony to say that 3D will in-effect create such a new experience that it could be considered the PlayStation 4. Ideally, it won't turn us into laughing vegetables.

My money is on a 3 announcement since sony announced its plans to start rolling out its 3d platform for this year. Since going 3d might create the impression of the next gen of consoles since it seems to be the assumed next big thing thus the PS4 but since it will still be on the ps3 platform might be why its also tagged with V3.1 since there has been no word on previous iterations of it. The biggest clue to the whole 3d platform is the glasses and on a bravia HD tv that can do 3d imaging on it but if it really is a Sony thing it could be anything if they went back to doing their super artsy incomprhensable advert strategy

Oh Sony, you coy little strumpet. I never would have dreamed that you would eventually make another console, and would name it PS4, and that you might eventually release it.

If you all felt a bump, that was my world being rocked.
