well im a sociology student so i would perhaps be a counselor to other suvivors, whilst trying to study how society is functioning post-apocalypse. Although i dont think i would be too bad out in the wasteland, as long as there were others with me

Step 1. Cope with the fact that everyone I ever knew is dead.

Step 2. Set up a place where I can teach people how to fend themselfs. My service will probably be in high demand. I'm only 16, but I look 19 and i got a black belt and an orange belt. And the 1 month of krav maga which (and this is a rather sad realisation) might be the most useful in brutal combat. I'm also pretty huge which at least should give me some respect as a trainer.

Or just become a robber since I'm pretty good with guns.

Step 3. find this guy

Try to wall off the town with my good mates, and then we'll work on building a fortress. Set up a kind of post-apocalyptic medieval town. With any luck, I'll be able to turn it into a trading centre. With money comes power, and I'll be able to influence mercs and soldiers to work as town guards. We'll manufacture weapons, armour and ammunition in relative safety. With the excess caps, I'll hire assassins to eliminate other burgeoning leaders. This will remove rival factions and economic competitors. People want something, they come to me. Thus, I'll likely end up with a clinic, a gun store and some kind of general infrastructure within my walls. Then we can work on the development of purified crops and generator construction.
Finally, I'll assemble teams of power armoured knights to lead campaigns to drive mutants and other threats back. Assuming I can afford the best weapons, I'll send them outside of the town walls. Without rival groups jostling with me, these warriors will be the people whom the wastelanders look to for protection. Safety, check. Security, check. Money, check. Publicity, check. Bring it on wasteland.

And join him because he sounds like he could handle himself in a situation like this. Plus he sounds badass.

Actually screw step one and two, I'm doing that right away.

A student probably isn't ideal, but I could use my creative writing to help someone that intends to rule gain more support through my propaganda machine. I'd train with wasteland travellers so I could defend myself both in civilisation and the wastes, but mostly I'd live a cushy life as the left hand of a powerful leader.

I'd also have my own network of intelligence gatherers, so I have eyes and ears all over the town, everything that happens does so with my knowledge and approval, only the leader shall be able to overturn my decisions should the need arise. However, a great amount of effort would be attributed by me to hospital maintenence,education and combat effeciency for people of all ages, our little town would become a fortress and sanctuary. Do inform me if this is a little bit megalomanic...

I would hire you. As my second in command, there is nothing we can't do

You could use your writing skills to spread the word of my New York, and if business goes well, you will be paid large amounts of caps.

Or failing that I would probably only be qualified to shovel brahmin droppings. My life in the wastes is gonna suck...

I'd be pretty useless myself but I'm pretty good with technology and mechanics. I have a History BA and a computer science BSc

I've got some skill in melee weapons(and unarmed but until I get a deathclaw gaunlet and the paralysing palm perk, I'm leaving it as is next time I level up) and some decent skill in explosives, repairs and am studying to be a mechanical engineer. No experience with guns outside slingshots, bows and a home made firework airgun.

Probably find a settlement, try to become a peacekeeper or repairman or follow a caravan. Die by being shot or trying to fight a supermutant or giant radscorpion with close combat

i have a degree in computer science and know a good deal about engineering. i'd say i'm a good shot, i think i would join the brotherhood of steel and set up a post in or right outside town to help protect it

Basic British Army training and now I am a Mech. Engineer. SO...

Think I would stay in Town and help with the construction of things like defences and public buildings and keep up maintenance of things like electrical generators and fresh water generators.

But would think I was somewhat qualified to go on scavenging expeditions to get supplies for the Town too.

I'm a programmer, so I'd probably do a lot of computer stuff.

I steal everything that isn't nailed down then sell it to the local bartender. Then I leave before talking to the local criminal gang and do the prison missions but betray the prisoners to get the massive new california republic reputation boost.

Then i come back to the town and kill off the local criminal gang, then never come back because everyone in the town annoys the shit out of me.

I'm a research chemist so I suppose I'd alter my work to synthetic chemistry and make chems.

I'd probably hire a group of mercs to guard my lab with the funds I make from selling the chems.
