Interestingly, I've always somewhat thought this way, particularly when watching the TV show. The pokemon get absolutely thrashed simply so some ****** with a hat can get a badge. I've always thought it's be awesome if someone made a Pokemon movie or mini-series which was targeted specifically for adults. I remember seeing a trailer with similar concepts on Youtube once. A Voltorb was used as an explosive device to car-bomb a guy. It was awesome.

But I also hope Nintendo sue PETA so hard that they all die.

I do have my own issue with Pokemon and it's similarities to bloodsports but it isn't like this is a hot, controversial topic we're covering here. Cockfights and dogfights are already quite illegal here in the States. If they want to target actual animal cruelty, they should aim at actual animal cruelty instead of getting distracted by every Nintendo mascot that wanders by. It'd make a lot more sense to base a game around Micheal Vick's very real mistreatment of dogs than, say, Samus Aran's seemingly limitless hatred of space jellyfish.

Wait, do PETA actually do anything to seriously try and stop animal abuse/neglect or do they just prance around being assholes?
Google a bit and see what happens to pets who fall into PETA's clutches. It's pretty shocking.

Once again PETA make things more difficult for those of us who work in REAL animal welfare organisations. Christ, why can't we ignore these morons like the hypocritical trolls that they are?

I kind of wish they'd spend money actually helping creatures already in genuine need rather than taking more digs at children's entertainment. I give up a few days a month at a shelter since I'm admittedly just kind of soft in the center and this place needs the help, and it feels like a thousand dollars there would probably have done a lot more than paying for the programming for this.

They can say what they like, private organization, fair use in parody and whatnot, but with them, there's way too much noise and not enough results. Which makes them a lot more like government than I want to think about, but now that's just sniping.

Took them long enough, it's only been out for over a decade.

Secondly, they aren't generally caged up, they're digitized. Consider this horrible if you will, it still isn't conscious imprisonment.
It's still imprisoning them against their will. If pokemon are sentient I'm sure all those pokemon who were beaten into submission, left in storage and never touched again would prefer their freedom. I mean if you were taken against your will and put into suspended animation would that be ok just because you were unaware you were imprisoned? Hell if they're sentient they probably have family and friends you just separated them from. Ash's ridiculous amount of Tauros... Tauroses? are probably going to outlive their families while digitised. How do you think these sentient creatures will feel if they ever get out.
Dude everyone knows that they get to run around Oak's ranch while they aren't with the player, it's cool. Plus Ash caught the whole herd of Tauros so they are with their family. If anything, now they don't have to worry about getting separated.

It's all sunshine and rainbows in the PC box.

Man, fuck PETA, I have slit a rabbits throat in front of a few of some hardcore "wannabe meat eating" members in spite once, all they did was yell and cry. (yes I ate the rabbit). Munched the BBQ flesh and emailed them pictures. Dumbest group of people to walk this fine planet.

But they ARE right. Pokémon always made me uncomfortable because the concept is very similar to animal blood sports.
That's because you're reading waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much into it. As are thousands of killjoys.

EDIT:
I do like how the massive irony of Team Plasma went over their heads.
A group claiming to want to help animals/pokemon but in reality could care less and has questionable ulterior motives...
Thank god someone else pointed this out. I have to ask though, do you think Nintendo had some intentional thought over making an animal liberation group preaching and recruiting much like PETA or was it just a weird coincidence? I am thinking coincidence since this is Nintendo..

Dunno why but this game actually made me really uncomfortable. Like, I had to stop after the first fight. And this is coming from someone they're "trying" to represent (a veggie)

I can only hope that Nintendo gun PETA down with their lawyer cannons, mostly because it would be funny.
Can't see why they haven't already. They've attacked Mario and Pokemon, two of their biggest franchises. They aren't even trying to be subtle, they're all out using their IP without permission to slander the IP in question. I'll be fine with Nintendo suing the ass off PeTA. Hell, they can get past fair use because well PeTA are f'ing showing Pokemon getting tortured and hit, something which doesn't happen in the actual games. I'm pretty sure that counts as something.
I'm pretty sure Nintendo haven't done anything because they're treating PETA with the contempt they deserve and are just ignoring them.

Nintendo doesn't make pokemon, they publish it dude.

If you look up Gamefreak founder and Pokemon creator Satoshi Tajiri reason for creating Pokemon it's actually quite touching.

"As a young boy, he loved to explore the outdoors and was especially fascinated with insects. He loved to collect insects, hunting for them in ponds, fields and forests, constantly looking for new insects and coming up with new ways to catch insects such as beetles. He had such an interest in collecting and studying insects that he earned the nickname "Dr. Bug" among his peers.

In the late 1970s, the fields and ponds that Tajiri loved as a child were paved over by apartment buildings and shopping centers. At this time, Tajiri's passion for insects moved to video games and arcades. "

"In the early 1990s, when Tajiri first saw two children playing together with Game Boys using the link cable, he imagined insects crawling along the cable between the two systems. As he thought about the capabilities of the link cable, his idea for Pokemon grew, as he wanted to give modern children the chance to hunt for creatures as he did as a child.

The full page is here if you're curious.

Gamefreak was definitely aware of Peta, the whole message of B/W is that humanity and companion animals can live together without one being exploited.

Something Peta and Team plasma refuse to accept.

To be fair, it's a fairly apt comparison. I remember some stupid little dog-fighting iOS game a year or so ago, whoever wrote the Escapist news piece on it seemed to get sand in all sorts of crevices over it.

...I want to hit something now. Yes, Pokemon is sorta like animal fighting... but you have to remember they aren't real! ...Okay, so that's a... rough excuse. I still want Nintendo to sue these losers for everything they have...
