Western censorship of anime and manga is racist

Taking your behavior abroad and expecting it to be accepted just as it is at home sounds rather narrow-minded. Cultural sensitivity is a touchy matter but in my opinion it's the duty of the guest to accommodate the mores of the host. Applying local standards to foreign media isn't in itself a racist, although the motivations for doing so may be. Was the media "censored" simply because it's from Japan, or because it has plenty of ecchi? The former is simple racism, the latter is not.

It's not racist in any way. Censorship is usually bad in my opinion, but it isn't done because people hate the Japanese. It's to make it suitable to the target audience.

If it's racism that cause the censorship then you'd see more western animation of tentacle porn and skull f*cking.

I'm an American. If I put out a bunch of DVDs of me rolling in my own feces, then consuming it while beating a horse to death with a giant rubber phallus, is it racist because Australians are offended by an American film?

In my opinion censoring Japanese anime and manga to fit with Western mores isn't just a freedom of speech issue - it's also a kind of institutionalised racism that robs the creators of their cultural integrity.

This is what I think is wrong with Western censorship American companies impose on anime licensing - and for example what Australia does to anime like Azumanga Daioh - rated MA15+ for one episode where Kimura is pervy about schoolgirls whereas the rest is family friendly. It's racist in my opinion to enforce Aussie morals on Japanese anime creators in cases like that. It's like Australia sometimes wants to deny that sort of stuff happens in the world.
Oh gold PLEASE tell me you are trolling.

Killing black people is racist. Censoring crappy anime series is not.

Heck, just for that I want more censorship *cough*aslongasitisntintheseriesiwatch*cough*, just to piss off all the animé-nerds who won't be happy until the Japanese are hailed as the supreme master race.

This isn't racism, this is just taste. Australians have different taste in consumable media to the Japanese. You can't expect them to accept your product just because it holds your values. It's the height of cultural arrogance. It might even be.. *gasp*- racist!

It's a Japanese product going into a different country with different culture, and demanding to be accepted just because it's Japanese. If that isn't a cultural superiority complex I don't know what is.

Oh-hoo, now this is an interesting discussion.

So, racist... well, maybe. It isn't openly racist, but there may be ingrained racism in the system, it wouldn't come as a shock. However, being pervy about underage girls is most definitely a thing which our lovely country opposes, so I can't really see any other option (ratings system - yay, censorship = nay), what could the box say? "Warning- Japanese!"?

You keep using that word...I do not think you know what it means

Nothing you have said here is racist. The fact, at the end of the day, that Australia, for example, has different morals would entail that they change the anime slightly to fit in with their morals so they can enjoy it

"We will ban slanty-eyed perv-comics from Australia, because yellow monkeys are idiots and pedophiles" would be racist.

"This anime stuff is interesting, but some of it is a little wierd. We'll just cut out the weird stuff and enjoy the rest" is not

You are a member of my least favourite cult: The Knee-Jerks.

You were the insensitive bunch who declared Res5 racist because "you shoot black zombies". Sure, it turned out later that some stuff was racist, but you guys made your minds up by watching the trailers containing a zombie outbreak in an AFRICAN village in AFRICA with black AFRICANS.

I guess it's perfectly fine when Japanese do it? And disort stereotypes? Every german bloke is called Wolfram? And give English some sort of quaint upperclass feel with tea and crumpets and expensive cars?

Okey...

I don't think you appriciate the differences, and is turning into that dude that thought L4D2 was racist because of the amount of "black people" in New Orleans.

Fucking Cultures, how do they work?!

Wow you're right killing black people IS racist.

Trolling aside though you do raise a fair point. I don't see the problem with censorship, if it bothers you that much then just get the original version, it was intended so even the most sensitive people aren't offended, if you don't want the original then why bother complaining?

It's not racist. They are setting restrictions for people IN THEIR OWN countries, abiding by the laws of that country. If they were trying to force global censorship then I can see it being a problem, but I still wouldn't call it racism...
