Listen, guys, I'm sure it's all meant in good fun and you're mostly targeting the people who do ridiculous stuff, but you're lumping the assholes and lunatics in with actual transgender people. Even if you've decided to just assume that tumblr is full of nonsense, you should at least appreciate that you're punching down.

Jokes on you, you just gave me the green light to constantly refer to Eren as "That ************" from now on.

Though the guy above raises a good point.

We like to think we punch in every direction. Like a starfish.

Came here to ask if I should read this at work. Got my answer.

Will read it when I get home tonight then.
Nah, it's OK. They were being sarcastic.

OT: PFFFFFFFFFFyep.

My personal favorite was a Tumblr denizen who changed all their pronouns to various variations of "sailing".

You've gotta be fucking joking.

Ok, for awhile the silly gender thing was funny in a disturbing way but this is ridiculous.

I can't wait for this bullshit to blowover and people realize that the entire thing has been derailed and taken over by special snowflakes.

I get the feeling that you're not in the mood to have a discussion about power dynamics and the relationship between comedians and society. Okay. I'm not super qualified for such a debate myself.

On the third panel the guy says "I need that ************ to sign some insurance papers."
Why is he using a pronoun there?
The sentence structure does not work.
Just try replacing it with any other pronoun, it just sounds silly.

That's because ************ doesn't work as an actual pronoun in any proper sentence. Thus, characters who speak in complete sentences would need to use "that ************."

I actually think choosing your own pronouns is a perfectly fine way of defining yourself. I've created new pronouns for myself. Instead of "he," I'd like people to use "shoobi-doobi-loobi," instead of "him" I prefer "ay-ama-yooch-raysest," and instead of "his" I prefer the entire text of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix except for the boring parts.

This is possibly one of the best strips I have ever read from this. Well done! I laughed so hard, I think I herniated myself.

*She and not they. :p

And yeah I was being sarcastic and joking with that statement. :)
"Sail", actually. I'm clearly not on top of my game.

Just so you know, making jokes at the expense of groups that are generally treated negatively is kind of a dick move. The way I personally see comedy, is that its not about targeting all people, but more people that are more deserving of it. Thats how I see it, anyways.
Yeah, second that.

Most words for people that go round randomly punching people whoever they are would be rather NSFW.

I for one believe in equal treatment for all humans, including comedic treatment. I'm sorry you feel differently.

OT:
I love it. These Tumblr comics have been some of the best in a while.

You need this I think. Bloody people get so hung up over the "rules" of language. You do realize they are made up as we go right? It's not science, it's not chemistry.

Well that all depends on whether those people are funny or not doesn't it? Hint; 'respect my pronouns' Tumblrites are.

I know languages evolve and are effectively arbitrary (albeit necessary) forms of expression, just like most communication.

And yet, that fact does not endear me to people who want to change their daily pronouns to a specific, nonsensical vernacular for the sole purpose of making them feel special or important. That isn't helpful or necessary, it's just pretentious and stupid.

More broadly, if a word or form of syntax is needed, it can be invented. But reinventing words/forms when a perfectly serviceable set exists within a language already helps nobody, and that's exactly what's happening in the subject of today's comic.

Its not about "equal treatment", its about who, and more importantly why they're a target for comedic effect.

You can make fun of a transgender person. They're like anybody else. If you're making fun of them because they're transgender, however, you're a dick. You can very acceptably make a joke at the expense of war veteran with both physical and psychological scars. However, its not okay to make a joke about that veteran because of those physical or psychological scars. Its why most people were okay with all the jokes at John McCain's expense in the 2008 election until SNL did a sketch that mocked his inability to raise his arms - a handicap due to the fact that he was held and tortured as a POW for years.

I should've been more clear. Its not that nobody is off limits. Its that attacking people for certain reasons is the unacceptable behavior.
Well, that's where you have to see the subjectivity of comedy.

I for one found the arms sketch to be pretty amusing. Saying such comedy is "unacceptable behavior" is an utterly meaningless statement because it's only unacceptable to [i/]you[/i]

As for this comic, I'm not sure how any of this relates. It isn't mocking Tumblr people for being transgender, it's mocking all the silly terms they come up with to describe themselves. And even then it isn't directly mocking. More so just pointing out how hilariously far it could go if certain people decided they wanted the special pronoun treatment as well.

So you're saying transgender people deserve to be mocked, on the basis of them being transgender, then? Because its pretty obvious that this is the main target of the strip.
If I was talking to someone and he\she would tell me I'm supposed use some sort custom pronoun for em, I would laugh my ass of wether theyr transsexual or not.

Thats pretty much equivalent to someone wanting to be adressed as "big daddy" or talking about themselves in third person.
