Hello friends,

In this thread we will discuss about upcoming potential masterpieces this year. so friends, what games you are expecting this year to be a masterpiece?

To me, Im expecting only 2 games of 2019 to be a Masterpieces and they are

Doom Eternal and Dying Light 2

Doom Eternal will be undoubtly a Masterpiece even if it become 10 percent improved over Doom 2016 which is by far best game release this year. with set on earth, no arena lockdown, new engine and destructable demon and sword. it will be game of decade to me.

Dying Light 2 on other hand was the game i didnot expect anything until i saw last year E3 and was completely blown away by it. its one of the most unique game in most unique setting i have ever seen. the modern dark ages and story looks amazing. it looks alot like immersive sim especially when chris avellone is leading the game. no one expect sequel to mediocre generic zombie game looks this amazing.

theres other games i am expecting to be good or great. Im expecting Rage 2 which is releasing in week a good game but certainly not masterpiece. there something i may not impressed by it. infact id style gunplay is only thing that make it good. so it will be great 8/10 game to me. and if it get more than 8 i will consider it overrated.

Im also expecting Star wars jedi fallen order good game because Respawn knows how to make linear single player games. and we are lacking linear SP games today.

Although I consider Metro Exodus somewhat a flawed masterpiece.

so my friends, what games this year you are expecting to be masterpieces? lets discuss

Not sure if anything can surpass Sekiro at this point but it's pretty early so I'll keep my eyes open.

Between Sekiro, REmake 2, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Devil May Cry 5 the year has probably peaked already.

Rage 2 looks fun. What I've seen reminds me of Bulletstorm, which I was always kinda sad didn't get a sequel.

not sure about the word "masterpiece" but maybe that's internet code for "pretty alright" ...am certainly interested in Dying Light 2 as that has a writer involved who has got some waffle credentials and I kinda enjoyed the first one along with its DLC. hopefully it runs better than the first, which mainly was a frame rate issue on new hardware. there doesn't appear to be a release date though. allegedly this professional waffler is doing the waffles for Jedi: Titanfall too! Not the first Star Wars game for that human either. Rage 2 reminds me of those fruit salad sweets, but am going to assume it's a better version of Borderlands 3 with the benefit of most likely not being passively avoided

what was the question again? masterpiece? Uhh...feck knows. just realised I got no idea what's coming out. one day, maybe Hades? but not comfortable claiming quality of unknown qualities. unless a thing is annoying, then any old shite will be assumed

Dying Light 2 is going to be a masterpiece? Is that some sort of joke? You believe a AA zombie game is going to be amongst the best video games ever made, spoken of for years to come and defining its genre across the industry? That's not going to happen.

It could be good. It could be great. It won't be a masterpiece and it's cheapening to the word to use it to describe such a game. Baldur's Gate II, Deus Ex, Thief: TDP, Unreal Tournament, Silent Hill 2, Resident Evil 4, Majora's Mask, Portal, Halflife, Diablo 2, GTA3/Vice City, PoP Sands of Time, KotOR, Dark Souls, these are masterpieces that are still remembered circa two decades later. Dying Light 2 does not belong on this list.

To answer the question, the only game that I think could come close is Cyberpunk 2077. Considering the success of TW3, considering that there will be no compromise of the single-player experience to add extra monetisation or multiplayer features, it will be supremely immersive and of a scale hiherto unseen, with a retro-futuristic aesthetic and a focus on storytelling. In my head, the perfect game I imagined many years ago is not far off what 2077 will be; RDR2 is very close, and i think this one will be closer. A hugely interactive and reactive world, the player having the agency to drive gameplay while being at the centre of a compelling narrative...that could be a masterpiece.

From what I've seen, of all the games that have been announced, Remedy Entertainment's Control looks like the only game innovative and unique enough to warrant a masterpiece title if they can do it right. Too bad for you that you'll never get to play it. Too bad for us that you'll lie that you did just so you could say that yet another game featuring a female protagonist sucks.

The Outer Worlds could be a masterpiece as well since it's an RPG made by Obsidian and those tend to be really good.

None.

Not saying this to be snide, just that very little of any media can be called a masterpiece.

With respect, I don't think you understand the meaning of the word therefore. Those games are all genre-defining titles and among the best examples of each. Whether you like any one of them or not doesn't matter (i know I certainly don't like them all).

Intentionally or unintentionally, you are cheapening and misusing the word to mean something different, or don't fully understand what the word means in context. It doesn't mean a game you like, or even simply a great game.

I'd rate both RE2 Remake and Sekiro as definite 10/10 games. Atleast they are for me. xD

'Masterpiece' is subjective, 'favorite' is probably more appropriate espescially in B-cell's case(we know you only like Doom and first person 'immersive sim' by now). Dying Light 2 and Doom 2016 part 2 might very well be your favorite games but calling either of those titles a 'masterpiece' is just a wee bit ridiculous.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Well, Touhou Luna Nights already came out so choosing another masterpiece will be tricky. Well, assuming Freedom Planet 2 doesn't get pushed back again, it will be a masterpiece. Same with Hollow Knight Silksong. Blazing Chrome, Cyber Shadow, and Wrath: Aeon of Ruin all look really good but I'm not certain of being able to call any of them masterpieces yet.

The main enemy are zombies, it's a zombie game.
certainly not according to developers

Nowhere does it say it's not a zombie game.

That's like saying Telltales The Walking Dead isn't a zombie game because it's more about the people and the relationships you have with them.

I'm afraid that's objectively incorrect. It was a seminal piece of action-platforming that nimbly and deftly trod the knife-edge separating style and substance, narrative and gameplay. It was accessible, intuitive, good looking for the time and not shabby even now, and innovative as all hell. Was it flawless? Of course not. Will everybody enjoy it? No. But in terms of the critical reception and its influence on gaming, it's indisputably more than "an alright platformer game".

Anyway - I honestly can't think of any games due to drop this year that I would be willing to call a potential masterpiece. In fact there's not much I'm looking forward to at all.

You're asking B-Cell to actually have any sort of willingness to expand their world and way of thinking. It's been the same thing spewed 100 times over for the past 3 years. We could just necro his old threads with new information and it'll still hold the same value of discussion. Especially since any good games with female protagonists are apparently Satan and kryptonite combined
