It really depends on whose say it is that one ought be ashamed of something cause I'm sure someone thinks just about anything is something to be ashamed off.
A pretty common one I've ran across often is being a fan of kodomo no jikan and considering a very insightful coming of age story with amazing characters. I'll always tout that series's virtues when it comes up but people have a kneejerk "ew, lolis, jail, fbi" sort of generic meme reaction to it (ignoring the fact that a mangaka is a woman with daughters and that in Japan sexual humor is mainstream) which I guess indicates that at least some people think it should be something I'm ashamed of lol.
Oh yeah, on top of being full of great characters, it's also full of hilarious desk-slapping jokes too. A lot of them are JP puns so a certain degree of familiarity is useful in appreciating them all but there's all sorts of them too.
Oh and as for all the furry talk, I never got the appeal. I think Carrot from one piece is cute but it's not really something I'd ever be into and more something I'd be fine with but never actively seek out. And all those kigurumi things are just bizarre to me as well.
Yea, it goes straight to Loli's because anytime you create a character with childlike features and place them in adult situations, it is seen as normalizing the sexualization of children and is also seen as "grooming material". Part of the issue with anime is that the faces are made to look childlike with toddler like enlarged features. Putting a toddler head on an adult body and giving them children actually does not make it any "better", they still have the child like head, and that is the primary issue to begin with.
The other relevant issue is that it is also fairly well known that Japan ALSO has a pedophilia problem as well, so claiming it to be "mainstream in japan" isn't exactly making a case for it. According to my friends in Japan, it is a well known problem but they cannot have it addressed by government as much as it should be because it is seen as worse to even discuss it openly than to actually do something about it. No, not everyone in Japan thinks these cartoons are acceptable, but due to their repressive culture, not much is done about it because they view it as worse to talk about it in the first place. It isn't necessarily a "knee jerk" reaction, they are really just pointing out a fairly well known issue.
