Stage 3 in CoM2 is complete. I managed to beat the demonic train boss with Robert on a sliver of life left. The other characters died from stage hazards before getting to the boss. I now have Hachi, the dog in a Steampunk mini-mech. This what old school gaming is all about! Remember we would get crazy character designs like this on a daily basis. That is something I am glad that has made a comeback to gaming! Stopping for the night and will play more when I get off from work.

Was able to get my hands on a PS5. Played the built-in game/advertisement which is like a tutorial for the console and controller. I also got the "pulse" headset and I must say I am impressed with all of the tech. No I'm not a bot and sure maybe I'm justifying the cost and effort I put in to get this machine, but the controller is super responsive, the headset actually sits really comfortably for long sessions, the console is quiet (!). Most impressive is battery life for the accessories- I played all day yesterday and only charged during chores and meals and never ran out of juice.
I can't say I'm hypre aware of the "haptic feedback," whatever, but I also put vibration on low because I actually don't like that stuff too much.

*sigh* yeah... loaded it up to mess around and "test" the console and here and I am sucked in again. Trying to beat the one boss I gave up on before with the "bad" ending." Even though the other "good" ending final boss is more notorious and has 4 rounds while the "bad" ending one only has 3, I just have so much trouble reading the moves with this one. As of now I'm determined to keep trying though.

Been playing through New Vegas with a new character and some mods switched around. This time I went with a focus on explosives and unarmed inspired by Mr Torgue from Borderlands (down to the aviator glasses, bandana and going around bare-chested). Right now I'm focused on gathering enough caps for the Gun Runners' Arsenal power fist that apparently explodes people on a crit kill. What better to recreate the "PUNCH HIM SO HARD HE EXPLODES" moment from the Tiny Tina DLC? It's really fun how differently this game plays even when you're going through the same places.

One thing I've come to realize is that installing the "World of Pain" mod was a mistake. Like I previously said, in theory it adds a ton of content, but unless you've done a 100% playthrough of the game like 3 times, in actuality it ends up diluting the game's quality. You end up finding tons of places with tons of loot and exploration, but it skews the balance Obsidian designed the game with. Like how I complaiend about the game favoring Guns and Lockpicking over other skills at the start. Turns out that's not actually true, it's only because the creators of the mod just defaulted to those as solutions to most of the content. It also means that the ratio of locations to quests is actually way more imbalanced than in the base game, leading to what can feel like a lack of meaningful quests. When in reality it's the opposite: it's the glut of locations that's the problem. And since the mod creators were working with already existing assets, there's way less interesting locations like Vault 11. It turns the game from a nuanced, multi-layered adventure into more of a Borderlands style loot and shoot dungeon crawler, which I guess is fine for people who like it, but there's better games for that.

I went briefly back to Hollow Knight to see what it would take to get to the "true ending", and fuuuuuuuuuuck no! I'm not going on that fucking grind-a-thon fetch quest just to get a better ending. You're supposed to gather 1800 essence with the Dream Nail to even be able to get to one of the many, many steps it takes to get there. I've gathered all the whispering trees and defeated all the warrior dreams, and still have only slightly above 1000 essence. Apparently I'm supposed to go back and challenge variants of previous bosses but frankly GTFO with that crap.

It's such a fucking shame that this game ultimately leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's so good in so many ways, but if one ending is completely unsatisfying, and the other one puts the Lord of Hollows ending in Dark Souls 3 to shame in terms of obtuseness and arduousness, then neither of those endings are IMO worth it. That and the frankly insulting amount of backtracking you have to do in this game. Whose idea was it to put the boss rush challenge area at the very end of a section you have to spend like 5 minutes on foot to get to? Add the incredibly convoluted map design that can outright mislead you at times, leading you to trudge back to whatever fast travel point you were last. This is not a game I'm going to play again for a good while.
What's the "true ending"? Is it the one where you fight The Radiance? Because that's the one I got and I don't remember it being really tedious to reach.

It is, yeah, and I didn't think it was that bad either. Once you've gotten most of the upgrades, none of which really require grinding if you're at least somewhat thorough with your exploration, even the dream version bosses aren't that difficult, and you don't even have much of a runback to any of them.

Man, there's becoming a very distinct genre of Open World and it's starting to meld together. I played Elden Ring for a couple hours and I was just kinda "Blegh" about it. It felt like they copypastad Dark Souls areas in a big map and "here, fuck, whatever, don't forget co-op".

My friend pointed out that how can I not like this when I just put like a hundred hours into Days Gone and I think I've figured out that I just don't have a high tolerance for "go explore shit, take down bases til we tell you to stop, also gather shit and craft because we said so".

By tolerance I mean I enjoy it to an extent, but I just get burnt out. They put out Dying Light 2, Elden Ring and Horizon Zero Dawn in the same week and they're all takes on what is essentially the same gameloop.

I have to admit I had a blast, literally, with Days gone, but I cant bring myself to do that again so soon. I switched to a Strategy RPG I picked up on Switch called

Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia

Really enjoying it, beautiful artwork.

It's the same problem I had when I beat Far Cry 6. I had to switch to that Suikoden game. "Omfg how dare you compare Elden Ring to Far Cry 6!!" It's deep state treadmill open world sandboxes sheeple. Wake Up. Read the gaming industries emails.

I am sure a majority of us don't hate or begrudge you for it. I did not get any of the three recent open-world games for a good reason. None of them interests me. I don't do Dark Souls type games, with or without the sandbox. I prefer straight up, shorter, linear games with tight level designs and characters. It's why I am more than happy to get Shadow Warrior 3 later this week. If I showed you my entire PS4 library, you would see that I only have about two open world games. On my Switch, I have no open world games.

I had more trouble with the bad (Shura) ending fights too. Emma was trivial after a while as she can simply be out-dueled quickly aside from needing restraint during her charge attacks, but I think the smaller arena made Isshin more of a pain. Hint:

I got help from this video but had to modify it a bit. The charged thrust needs to be done so you’re pretty much directly to his right side, and then just dash straight behind him (not at 11 o’clock or whatever; I still got hit half the time. Then either the Whirlwind Slash to his back or Ichimonji Double, but it may not always be worth the added damage with the slower startup and risk of being countered). The fire can be avoided by just standing wherever the flames aren’t lingering.

Also if you have projected force unlocked on the umbrella it can help with tanking a lot of his damage and throwing some back at him. Mist Raven can also help with countering the fire stuff, but both of these can use up spirit emblems quickly.

These huge open worlds should absolutely not be played back to back, of course you're burnt out.

The only people who "have to" do this are critics and reviewers whose job it literally is. But a healthy balanced diet of video games is one huge game and a bunch of littler ones in parallel or in between.

I got him, using a series of youtube videos and guides but adjusting as needed. This is my love/hate relationships with these games- if it weren't were such tools I'd never make it past the first boss, but still everyone's experience is different enough. Sometimes I look up a "cheese" or "easy" solution and it's actually harder than just doing it normal. This one included- I could not simply get the repeat pattern like that. But I would not have thought to use the thrust as an opening attack so I just did it sometimes as part of my arsenal of moves.

So now I realize that because I started a new save, the only way to platinum is to go into NG++ and beat ALL the freaking bosses again. I like to have a repetitive, grindy game while listening to podcasts and such so it looks like Sekiro trophy hunting will be it. NG+ is harder than I thought, partly because of course I don't have all the upgrades. But, man, I am getting one-shot by enemies that didn't do that before. I am now at Genichiro and am absolutely experiencing the weaker posture I have, which is making this already tough fight that much tougher.

I can't... I switched consoles and platforms and didn't have the PS+/cloud thingy subscribed so it's gone. *shrugs* oh well, it's no big deal if I just get burned out.
Most importantly I beat all the bosses (albeit not on the same character) so I'm happy with that.

Continuing my Ratchet and Clank (PS4) save file almost three years later. I stopped soon before the end. Barely understand what's going on after the long break. After this, I may force myself to finish Spider-Man and Infamous: Second Son, also two to three years later.

So, I've come back around a bit on Horizon: Forbidden West as I've been enjoying it a lot more in the last few sessions. This might have to do with a certain combination of side quest that really makes it feel like you're setting up/helping out a newly formed settlement in the middle of... well, I won't spoil it, but it's probably some of the most visually arresting scenery I've ever seen in an open-world game. It was nice just sorta sticking around one area of the map and slowly sorting out most of the issues there.

I am finding myself forgetting most of the (narrative) details of certain side-quest though since I probably activated them 5 or 6 hours ago, and with the amount the game has available (which is a fuckton) it can all kinda bleed together.

I think I'm getting close to the end of Earthbound. Got the 6th sound(Pink cloud) near Dalaam, all that's left is to get on the Boat from Summers and begin the LONG trek to the 7th and 8th sanctuaries. At first I was like, I got this. It's the old school game structure where you have a linear series of towns, each of which you need to solve their local problem before you can pass through whatever barrier is keeping you from progressing to the next one(Roadblocks, tunnel ghosts, etc), which normally ends when you get the global airship. Earthbound, keeps this particular pattern until you reach fourside, the local big city, which has only one road in and out and that's the one you arrived on. After this you end up doing a bunch of weird backtracking and sidequesting to get a couple more sanctuaries, go to summers via winters(it makes slightly more sense then it sounds) before eventually the game goes back to being linear again for the last stretch. And there's no global airship, the closest thing is a UFO which takes you all of 3 places and breaks twice, though you do get two teleport spells which all you to visit places you've already visited, which makes backtracking a lot easier at least.

Also, I don't think I knew about Jeff's tool use/repair ability the last time I played it. Basically as you go through the game, you can/will pick up "broken" items and when you sleep at a hotel, there's a chance Jeff will fix one of the items overnight. Some of these items are meh consumables, but some of them are useful tools and weapons, like a device that sucks HP from your foes and heals Jeff(making him a tech vampire) or drops an enemies shield(not super useful because most enemies don't have them) or is a fucking bazooka. These tools can make a difference if used properly(though each one takes up a valuable inventory spot) and Jeff needs to have high enough IQ to fix the tool in the first place, so it's basically something you either grind for or don't get the really good stuff till late in the game.

I've finished all of the Sanctuary dungeons in Earthbound and now the endgame begins. Ness is currently level 69, and I don't think I've been grinding very much - on my last file he was about level 75 by the point I'm currently at. Anyway, other than a few points early on, you basically don't have to grind levels at all if you don't want to, has been my experience.

My Sekiro platinum trophy hunt is driving me insane and I can't stop.
I was going to just sort of dip into it while playing something else for real, only going through the motions while listening to music or podcasts or whatever, but dammit I am chasing every struggle. It's like dating a hot crazy girl- I know I should move on but I just can't bring myself to quit.

I am in NG+ with only have my attack/posture upgrades which means that bosses basically one-shot me sometimes. My last battle was with the headless Guardian Ape and his friend.
For those who haven't played, this is a big ape you already killed once, now it does crazy big moves that kill you while jumping around crazy and occasionally screaming "terror" effect that kills you instantly if you're too close without a consumable counter-effect.
After you kill it one round, its mate jumps in and now there are two big apes jumping around all crazy. The strategy to defeat is to "bait" the first one into doing the terror scream which makes the mate chase you, you can stun it and do damage. It's the only way to separate them because otherwise they're together and it's impossible to attack one and not get slaughtered by the other.

In NG, I "only" had to do that terror-chase-stun pattern twice. But now in NG+, it required 4! Baiting that terror scream is really tough- you can't just run around in a circle because they just chase you around. I tried that, and sure I could survive but not make any progress. So I kind of had to let them come at me a bit and step back, etc.
Oh and anyway after you kill the mate you still have to kill the main one again.

I finally did it. So, so freaking hard but I'm pleased that I'm able to adjust my tactics eventually. I'll admit that I get through FromSoftware games by youtubing the hell out of stuff, and that's how I even knew about the bait-terror-stun strategy. But youtube doesn't tell you how to adjust when your posture meter recovers a bit slower (Genichiro!) or your attack power just isn't enough to replicate what some guy on youtube claims is easy.

The enemies more or less throw themselves at you and in some places it's very hard to avoid them(like the four side sewers). And the exp and money you goes up quite a bit as you transition areas

Agreed, although some “field” bosses are much easier to fell on horseback (looking at you’s, tree sentinel and giant trolls). Although at the same time, this is where I’ve also had the only real detrimental performance issues. Tree sentinel is fine on foot, but man does this dood tank frames while riding Torrent. Thankfully enough it’s mostly been when at a distance and lining up another pass at him, so nothing that caused unfair deaths IME. I think it might have something to do with how the engine handles scaling, and also using ashes of war seems to exacerbate this issue. Wondering how much it can be smoothed out with further patches.

This is also on a base PS4, so I suppose it goes with the territory. Still though, it’d be nice to see some improvements there along with the beefier platforms.

Also experienced my first bug, which worked in my favor. I fought the Ulcerated Tree Spirit, which can be reached in the opening area after obtaining a couple stone keys.
Considering the health pool and how aggressive this thing is it would’ve been a grueling fight, had it not been for the AI just kinda giving up after being poise-broken a few times. Like at about half its health I was able to just wail on it without repercussion. Might be worth checking for anyone wanting an earlier victory against it before it gets patched. Nets 15k runes and is kind of a fun trek down to it.

One other thing, I’m done with any youtube vids about this game blatantly boasting about tips and tricks for “easiest way to” this or that. This vid for example saying it works on “all bosses” turned out being complete bs for me, at least against the couple bosses I’ve tried it on -

I mean sure, it’s a cool find that might work here and there but it’s getting really old how much try-hard clickbait there is with this game. I told myself before it released I was going to just play as blind and possible, so I’ll consider this my gut check.
