So I sort of did a Dead Mines run in WoW. I say "sort of," because a group was doing a raid and I stumbled upon them, so we cleared out the original area. But then some went AWOL, and they had to wait, and I had to get to work, and, well, yeah.

It was actually quite fun, the people were nice, but I think that the time zone differences are really not working in my favour. By my guess, most of them were playing in the evening (going by the server time), but for me, it was mid-afternoon. Also, a shoutout to the leader (a level 60), who was helping us plebs (around level 20, including myself). I'm no stranger to doing free labour (I edit/admin various wikis after all, plus post and review on FFN), but shoutout to these chaps, I think they deserve kudos.

Oh, and I also cleared out the Gold Coast Mine by myself, comitting mass murder. For profit!

Ahhhhh.... Right, of course.

I just realized why the game is called Omori and why I got such strong Yume Nikki vibes from it. Omori as in, hikikomori. Yeah, I think if you know anything about Yume Nikki then you'll have an idea of what topics Omori deals with. The room you wake up in, the first item you get, the topic it's dealing with, the artstyle, definitely Yume Nikki inspired.

So I finally completed 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim last night before bed and I'm finally getting a chance to detail my thoughts.

Overall I rather enjoyed it. The combat sections were enjoyable enough and I was drawn into the various storylines of the 13 characters(to one degree or another) and I just wanted to see where the fuck all of this was going, considering all the twists and turns and such they kept throwing at me. To be fair, I got a bit annoyed at some of them just being the same loop over and over again but this time you had to find a different way to end the Loop in order to trigger a different ending(Juro's was particularly egregious for this for a while. I thought I was gonna be stuck on the same afternoon forever) but I was also kinda amused by how the different characters each had their own special vibe to it. Natsuno had a whole UFO enthusiast/Sci-fi lover thing going with her little "Alien" buddy in her backpack, Megumi was playing Hitman for a talking cat(and of course, nothing weird about that) and I swear Takatoshis arc was mostly chasing a cat around to find enough loose change to get him a Yakisoba Pan.

But still, despite throwing every Sci-fi trope in the fucking book at this plot, I guess it kinda does work in the end, even if if it's one of the most convoluted fucking plots I think I've personally tried to Navigate in a video game(aside from Xenogears) and rivaling Thomas Pynchon novels in convolutedness. Not saying it doesn't have hole and such, but I was willing to just keep rolling with it for as long as it took.

Combat mission wise I can see why they went with the glorified Radar display for the UI considering how much goddamn dakka I eventually ended up dropping everywhere to hold off the Hordes coming at me from every direction. Especially when you considering that most of the missions take place in 2 minutes of "real" time or less, but since you spend a lot of time giving orders and pausing you might be playing more like 15 or 20. Considering each battlefield is a 2x2 km area that does make sense that you're able to move around so fast, though ironically when you see the Kaiju or Sentials moving in the story bits they're moving far, far slower then the combat sections seem to imply. Though I guess we can chalk that up to the animation budget, much like most of the "fights" we see(like the one in the bathroom) are entirely offscreen.

One thing that does kinda bug me, so I'm gonna put it in spoiler tags.
So 1945 is basically a simulated area, much like the rest of them, created as one of the eras for people to live in. Fair enough but exactly which people were meant to live in 1940's Japan I have to question, considering that during the 1930's and 1940's Japan was a military government that could be described as Fascist and by 1945 Japan was on the edge of Ruin, even before the Atomic bombs were dropped. So apparently there were people invovled in Project Ark who apparently liked the idea of simulating that period of Japanese History, including losing WW2, as a cool place to live, or something. Unless I missed something vital, it sounds like someone wanting to live in a Simulation of Nazi Germany during the 1940's, including the inevitable downfall of the Reich, while being smack dab in the middle of it, not a passive observer

Now, whether or not someone else would enjoy this game no doubt is based on two things:
1.) How much the story and characters are engaging them.
2.) How much you're into the strategy game aspect

Because ultimately you have to deal with both, since story bits inevitably get gated off by progress in the strategy game part and the story provides a hell of a lot of context for what the hell you're doing here. To be fair, I guess it's possible to ignore most of the story mode and just do the strategy game portion, though considering you earn a lot of free "money" needed to upgrade the sentinels by doing the story mode, you'd probably have more and more difficulty after a while keeping up with the hordes of Kaiju...and if you're skipping the story you might as well be playing other games that don't really even bother with story(like most strategy games). There's also a difficulty slider that presumably allows you to just plow through much of the strategy stuff if you place it on Easy mode, though honestly there were only like 3 or 4 missions I didn't S rank with little issue playing on normal, just by using the most effect weapons/sentinels for the mission(Sentry Guns end up being serious gamebreakers much of the time, because it's like dropping like 10 more sentinels that don't need any managing onto the field and just letting them crowd control ). Hell, during the final mission, where I was pretty much supposed to run out the clock against just wave after wave of every fucking type of Kaiju, by the time the Timer had run out and ended the mission, I'd almost completely cleared the map with barely any damage taken to my Sentinels. Though after a while it becomes very clear that some weapons are very, very OP when upgraded and used properly(Sentry guns, railguns, Missile Rain, Demolisher Blade).

I'm not entirely sure why, but I reinstalled and started playing "Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor" again. I do like games where you can be exceptionally cruel, and wasn't in the mood for a shooter. But I had to play something while waiting for content updates in Weird West and My Time at Sandrock. I started up a few on smaller games I picked up on EGS for free (Pine, Windbound, ManEater) and they are all fine, I just wasn't getting into them. Pine, really nice game... but resources are too few and far between for a game who's main focus is crafting. Windbound... kind of the same problem, but it doesn't look as nice. The path through either seemed to be really long for something I just wasn't very into. ManEater... it is great fun for about a half hour, but there isn't much to it.

But as I scrolled back up to the "M's" on my Steam list to maybe play a little more "My Time at Sandrock," "Middle Earth: Shadow of War" caught my eye. I wasn't in the mood for tranquil building, but I was feeling full-on wading knee deep through orc murder. You do start out fairly weak (comparatively) in the game. But a few short levels, perks, skills, and selection of runes later and you might as well be Aragorn. My least favorite element: anything that has to do with Lord of the Rings. This game would have been so much better without the license, and just its own original IP. My favorite element: they ever so slightly characterize the orcs. Just enough to give you a very slight "orcs are people too... bad people, but people too" vibe. Way more than average cannon fodder enemies in games usually get. It makes you feel a little "I am Legend" (not the movie) vibe from the game.

Plus, its just fun to be evil to orcs.

It's a shame the system hasn't been copied by other game, a non LOTR indie game with the system would be great. Maybe set it up so that you actually play as the orc you control and every time you die you have to use another orc with different strength and weakness.

Well, WB legally said nobody else can do so, but then they've barely made any more use of it themselves. Apparently they just wanted to keep anyone else from using it either and are content to sit on it.

I really hate that kind of shit. I get patenting shit because you created it and you want sole control over it until the patent expires,, but then not bothering to use it at all just feels like you're using it to fuck everyone else as your overriding priority. It feels much like studios who get mad when their IP is being infringed on by fan games, but also haven't made a game with that same IP for a decade or more(which is arguably worse because fan-games often are done for free). Like SE doing a C+D on the Crono fan games despite not having released a Crono game since Cross and like no apparent plans to ever revive it aside from the occasional remaster.

Or like when Sega did a cease and desist on the developer, Bomber Games, for the Streets of Rage Remake. It's an even bigger dick move on Sega's part, because they knew about it for years, and even encouraged the developers to make the game since 2007. The C+D happened around 2015. It didn't amount to much, because the game still gets updates and support, but you have to find the links on your own. But again, why bother in the first place? SOR4 was even close to announcement yet or pre-production by that point. They didn't start working on that game till about 2018 at the bare minimum.

Speaking of brawlers, I am done with Final Vendetta for now. Even on easy mode, you only get eight lives and you have to find extra lives hidden in the environment. The enemies are way too cheap at times, and screw that fourth boss. He literally costed me two lives, and one of them had me stuck in a grab loop in the corner. He kept grabbing me over and over again and I couldn't mash out of it. The furthest I got is to the sixth stage. If you're going to get this game, just wait for a deep deep sale. As in, I am paying $4-5 for this. Until they make a patch, and I highly doubt it, where they add continues or at least a story mode where you can continue, I'm not playing anymore. Anyone interested in this game, just play SOR4 or the Takeover.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Still playing the FF7 remaster. I'm at the wall and just finished the arena, its still very charming for a game made by Square.

I also finally beat Dawn of War 3, I quite enjoyed. Even with an oddly clunky main menu.

Got a hankering for some down to earth TPS’ing so booted up my Crushing playthrough of Uncharted 4. I’m approaching the Treasury now and am reminded of how often this whole series relies on waves of generic grunt type enemies. The gameplay saves it from being a complete slog, but it would’ve been neat if they mixed it up more often. Have some boss-like characters once in a while for instance.

Other than that, still pushing forward in ER. At the doorstep of Castle Sol in the mountains, but also cleaning up other areas. For example, I completely missed the outer loop of the volcano in Mt Gelmir, where you ultimately get to the Hermit Village that contains one of the best spells. Now I’m going back to finish off that pair of gargoyles underground.

Having a boss type character wouldn't be "realistic" enough. Even though they had one in the second and third game. This guy should help you out, if you're having any trouble.

So…you’re definitely on a metroidvania kick I take it? Really though I’m curious if you’re specifically seeking this genre out comprehensively to see what’s what, or what?

If so I’d hope you’re making an excel list or something to rank them, because I’d like to see it.
I got into the indie scene a couple of years ago during quarantine after burning through most of my AAA backlog and Metroidvanias in particular have become a new refreshing acquired taste for me. Something about the simple zen task of going through a big jigsaw puzzle of rooms and connecting everything, as well as the constant feeling of progression from ever-evolving gameplay. It's a nice mix of calm and catharsis. And I find there's more variety within the genre than there usually is within most videogame genres, so I enjoy the sport of finding and playing games that interest me for whatever reason.

I keep Excels of pretty much everything but I feel like I have a ways to go before curating a decent list. Sometime this year maybe.
There's a pretty good site that I used for reference, even if I don't agree with certain criteria: https://metroidvaniareview.com/

I had to look up how to reach the outer loop because I wanted to find Alexander again. It is oddly easy to miss that without even trying. Also, fuck those twin Gargoyles.

I kinda forgot about him too and was wondering who the hell could’ve been basking in molten lava so enjoyably. So it was a pleasant surprise as always as he’s probably my favorite NPC.

I’ve read about a way to bait the gargoyle twins to their deaths on the far ledge, so I’ll be trying that if my mimic/frost combo doesn’t work.

Apparently you can use Crystal Darts against them as well to make them attack each other.

Currently playing the Guardians of the Galaxy game, now that I have access to it. The Squeenix one, not the Telltale one.

It is so good, people. If you have GamePass, or Playstation Plus Premium (which is how I'm playing it), I recommend it. Not only is the gameplay itself solid, but it does a really good job of capturing the feel of the GotG without being tied down to the MCU story-wise.
