So I've gotten 15/16 endings in Binding of Isaac, beaten both Cathedral and Sheol with Isaac, Maggie, Cain, Eden and Azazel, and beaten both Chest and Dark Room at least once each. I'm at the point where I can realiably get a new trophy or item or secret every run, and the completionist in me wants to go for 100% but also I'm a little sick of this thing. And unless you're gambling on an absolutely broken run you might as well not even bother with the very last Chest/Dark Room area.

I really looking forward to this one. I've only played the game once at a Circuit City. Other times I saw videos on YouTube way later. I like the first remake and have a physical copy on Switch.
I quite liked the first remake also, but the demo just feels... off. But again, I remember the original feeling off also when I played it so... *shrugs*

I know the first remake had some trouble as launch, but Forever Entertainment did patch it on all systems to run better. They're known for doing this with their remakes unfortunately. Though I didn't know about it, until after all the updates happened. I got my copy of Panzer Dragoon 1 Remake for Switch physically back in 2021. I have feeling it's going to be the same or similar case for Zwei. I do hope that it's not the case, but given Forever's track record...yeah. Though apparently, the demo is an improvement from what they showed off last time.

Give the demo a shot and let me know what you think.

I wouldn't. 100% completion in roguelikes is one of those things that can devour your life and then feel completely meaningless afterwards.

Tried some more demos.

The Last Salvage Squad. This is an interesting fps game, where you play a moderately sized giant robot.. girl? Fighting giant robot tripod walkers. What makes it interesting is that there are only a few of you left and you have to salvage your weapons from the battlefield. So the start of a fight is you dodging enemies while trying to get a gun then taking out the walkers and as long as you don't die, another friendly robot will join in the hanger.

Altered Alma. Seems like a metroidvania. Its got some really really nice pixel art graphics, gameplay feels pretty good and character graphics are nice, seems like you can build relationships with your crew and have awkward make outs if it gets high enough. One thing I'm unsure about though is the teleporting dagger you get early on. It lets you teleport to a wall and you can just use it over and over again which to me says they are going to have to do a lot of things to prevent you from just easily sequence breaking, so that probably means some rough platforming. Still though, keeping an eye on it, seems cool.

Drone Sector. You play a circling drone gunship, al la that mission in COD4 where you are playing the gunner on the c-130. I played an earlier demo of it and really liked it, but this new demo... I don't know, something felt off, its still neat and you have a few squads of troops to command around the battlefield to complete objectives, but... I'm not sure what felt missing.

Wildblue Skies and Fur Squadron Phoenix. I'm lumping these together because they both really want to be Starfox. Wildblue is decent, but feels lacking, you don't seem to have a lock on weapon, despite the game really feeling like it wants you to have one and its got an annoying habit of the aiming reticle fighting against you when you target anything near the side of the screen. But its not out yet so that might be fixed. Fur Squad feels pretty good to play, camera is further back so it feels better to play then Wildblue, but it has the feeling of AI slop all over it, the character art and the voices being the most prominent. Fur also has a roguelike element, if you die you can spend points to unlock upgrades, not sure how I feel about that.

Parasite Mutant. Not a new demo but I finally got around to it, the combat is really similar to Parasite Eve, which is awesome. Not sure about the story and such, I get the feeling the main character will be the usual robotic combat female that Japan loves to do "I'm a cute giiiiirl, but I'm only made for the mud and blood of the battlefield" doesn't help that she's wearing a thick trench coat looking thing but her boobs are still bouncing around. At least shes not a teenager... probably.

Final note on Relooted after having finished it- the last mission is not some ultra-hard test of true skill, it's more a screen by screen kinda victory lap. I mean there's still the challenge aspect of the platforming but it's structured in a straight-forward way. This is another way the game caters towards the casual- it wants you to beat it, rather than making you feel like you have to "earn" it by giving you bullshit difficulty spikes like so many games.

On to the next thing: oh look, the Neva folks released a DLC! Neat.

Beat Gobliins 6. Yeah, that was some point and click goodness. It got better about telling you what it wanted from you as it went on and while some areas had some moon logic, I still really enjoyed it. If you like old school point and click adventures then you need to play it.

Yeah I'm done with Isaac for now. Besides I forgot I preordered Never Grave months ago and it's finally releasing next week, so that's another timesink in the waiting.

The Neva DLC blows. It's a prequel, so you don't have the dog, and that was the cool thing about the game. Instead, it's just bullshit floor-is-lave platforming. Refund request sent.

Beat Shinobi: art of Vengeance. Its fine. The combat is quite good, the backgrounds can be fantastic, the music is good, the story is pretty bad and in your face, the level layouts are decent, the difficulty is easier then I expected. The final boss was much easier then I expected, the secret boss was kinda easy too. Its also not a metroidvania. I would give it a recommend, just know what you're getting into. Its much more of a linier run and gun type game with very light exploration.

Saw that the demo for Panzer Dragoon 2 had updated so tried it again and it does feel better then it did, still needs some kinda impact effect for the homing laser things, but looking forward to it more.

Also grabbed Little Noah: Scion of Paradise to keep me busy till Monster Hunter Stories 3 comes out. Its a side scrolling action roguelike. You summon helpers to attack for you like in Ender Lilies. I quite like the aesthetic its got, it reminds me of Bravely Default. A bit too early to have much impression for the story, but the writing is pretty decent. Voices are kinda annoying since Noah tends to say stuff when she attacks, or jumps, or dashes. But so far combat feels decent and on hard its decently hard, but I think that's mostly just tougher enemies who hit harder.

Made it up to the Moon in Final Fantasy 4... and then immediately got into a random encounter so far above my level that I had to use three Phoenix Downs to get through it. I'm pretty sure I'm somehow underleveled for this, so I might have to take a while before the next update to level grind. I don't know where to do that, so I'm just going to have to pick a location at random I guess.

This close to the end, I don't really want to just straight-up give up on it if I can avoid it.

Bit further into Spider-Man 2. Not sure how well I'm liking the combat changes, although I am getting used to them. Just gets a bit frustrating when I feel like I'm going to take a hit no matter what because I have two or three enemies attacking me at once with mutually exclusive ways of avoiding/countering their attacks.

That said, I'm overall liking the story a fair bit. Glad that they didn't save the inevitable "Harry finds out Peter is Spider-Man" for the climax, but got it out of the way fairly early on in a way that makes sense. Plus, that Agent Venom get-up on Harry looks cool as. Nice to see that Tombstone and hopefully Quentin Beck have legitimately reformed, and aren't just faking it for a scheme. Feels like Spidey is actually making a difference by busting them and locking them up, rather than just repeating a cycle of defeating them over and over again.

Tetris Effect

Well, it sure is Tetris. But with all kinds of psychedelic colors and effects.
I wanted something to just be able to pick up 'n' play in small doses. These days folks go to roguelikes and deck builders but I don't like those so, as a true old man, I revert to nostalgic comfort with a fancy version of thing what I played on a Gameboy.

Playing on a Steam Deck and it's fine- it is "verified" though some of the reviews are complaining about performance. I've not had any problem.
It's interesting this was made to work on the Deck because the game encourages immersion- headphones, and even a VR option. Playing on a handheld completely contradicts that goal I think? But I don't need that kind of intense immersion, Deck and earphones are fine for me.

That's because it's Tetris. Portable or on a big screen? It works exactly as intended.

Welp, guess I'm doing a third round of level grinding to beat Final Fantasy 4, because even though the boss technically has a strategy (albeit an extremely arcane and hard-to-figure-out one), ultimately, it still boils down to a HP check like the last boss of 3. Either you can survive a Flare followed by a Big Bang (or a Big Bang followed by a Big Bang) or you can't beat Zeromus and finish the game. And considering just how long the cutscene before the boss is, I really don't want to keep attempting it to see if it's possible at my current level rather than just coming back with a level that's definitely high enough to actually win the battle.

Fuck's sake, guys. Hopefully by the next game you actually learned how to design a final boss.
