Beat Rebel Transmute. The ending felt very representative of the game's prevailing awkwardness: the last trophy + Platinum popped accidentally after quitting and reloading the game at the final boss (I was making a cloud save just in case).

I did beat the boss anyway and at 92% completion that's enough Rebel Transmute for me.

It just felt like there was no discipline to the game, and very little feedback to your actions. I would often quit an area too early thinking I'd reached the end with my present abilities, or hit a brick wall at the end of an area that turned out to be entirely optional, or complete some gauntlets that would provide major skill checks yet get nothing for them.

Sometimes you get an ability for beating a boss, sometimes you don't. Sometimes what looks like something you're eventually meant to climb or break through remains an obstacle the whole game. Sometimes the charms you get at shops or as rewards make a bigger impact on your moveset than what you get from the critical path, like casually obtaining the ability to stick to walls or charging a dash in mid-air or the game's meek equivalent of a double jump.

I like getting lost in these kinds of games but I think that should come from like the sheer wealth of possibilities or curiosity getting the better of me, rather than being confused or unclear about my own abilities or overarching objective. Otherwise the whatnowness of progress gets tiresome.

Samurai Warriors 5 - I am in the middle Oda's villain arc right now. Good news: Mitsuki is my favorite character of the new cast. She's basically this game's Kunoichi, except she is a straight up brawler with large ass Knuckle Dusters. I love it when Muso games do this type of thing, and have a punch/kick focused character. Mitsuki has got a lot of spunk, and is a hyper active ninja girl, but there is depth to her. I already got her to level 20, unlocked all three of her Muso Bars, and upgraded her weapon with high stats and high fire elemental damage. Fits with her fiery crimson red head personality. For refrence, this is her rage mode screen splash. I will be posting more of these later.

Beat the Chinese expansion for Age of Mythology. Its neat and they play different from the other factions, but the campaign isn't as long as the others so you don't really have time to learn about the Chinese mythology and characters. The other campaigns have the benefit of most westerners having at least passing familiarity with the gods and myths, not so with Chinese myths and gods and such. If it wasn't for Smite I wouldn't know how most of the characters were at all, like they mention NuWa but aside from telling us she build the pillars of heaven and we have to collect her stones to rebuild them, I don't recall it really telling us anything about her, she doesn't show up like Athena and Gaia does. Anyway, its still pretty cool, some stages do some really cool things like have an underworld you have to explore, but its mixed up so you have to go though mini missions in each factions underworld.

Started on Dawn of War definitive edition and holy crap, I didn't realize how much I had been missing Dawn of War. I probably beat the campaign like 3 or 4 times back in the day and it just pulled me back in. This edition also plays better then it did back in the day, being able to zoom out more is quite nice. So far I'm still on the first campaign, but making steady progress. Just finished fighting the Eldar... its weird calling them Eldar again, I got pretty used to Aeldari.

I beat the main campaign of Samurai Warriors 5. Great game, but somewhat short in a few areas. The game clearly wants you to do other sides of the story when they become available. I really wish we got more Yasuke. At least they gave him a graceful exit, and let him be a wandering ronin. The moments he shows up are good, but he really doesn't come in until late game. I know there's DLC where gets more screen time, but it should never come to that. There are alternate scenarios that can be unlocked by getting S-Ranks or meeting certain conditions in battles, but I am not doing that. I will get the DLC, whenever it goes on a huge sale next time.

Started Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo and I'm really digging it.

It's a top down Metroidvania/Zelda-like hybrid that refreshingly takes place in a bustling city that looks like something out of '90s Nickelodeon. You play a spoiled bat-kid thing who's really into yoyos and is a bit of a loser but his rich family kinda tolerates and must save the family business of... holding the monopoly on energy? Alrighty.

It's neat how your whole moveset is built around weaponizing your yoyo, and how it's worked into puzzles too. Love exploring the city for all its nooks and crannies.

After much bitching about the economy in Rebel Transmute I'm delighted with the one at work here. How it works is you go into debt when buying a new skill or perk, and have to work it off while under some kind of debuff. 50% of everything you collect automatically goes to canceling your debt. Since you lose some of your pocket money whenever you die, you're basically always encouraged to go on debt - it's the closest thing to banking your money. There's also other neat tactical tradeoffs involving a badge system.

The game's really brimming with humor and energy and creativity. It's from a Brazilian studio and I'm picking up on a lot of mutual sentiments regarding our little corner of the world.

Space Marine II.

I know it probably won't be the twist reveal, but I really hope there's a version of this game in the multiverse where that fucking Chaplain is in fact a traitor because I really wanna shoot him.

He betrayed you in the first game.

@Worgen, I picked up darkSector with some spare store credit at one of the game stores I shop at. I am still early in, but on Chapter 3. So I am still getting used to the Glaive. The combat works enough, but there is some obvious jank, even in the prologue chapter. Why is the first chapter in black and white? This is never elaborated on, aside from Hayden not having the ability to feel pain. A detail that is never specified, unless you read online interviews or go to the wiki. I'll give the game credit for having some actual color. Unlike Gears or Resistance 2.

I know this game is a mash up of Gears of War and Resident Evil 4.

It was also a prequal to Warframe before that was retconned.

I have not forgotten. That's partially why I contacteded you.
Ahh, I did end up with a free copy of it on steam awhile ago. I should really replay it, but I have like 70 games on my todo list.

... *checks* Err, 158, but I think like 50 of those are never going to play ones.

DragonAge Veilguard.

I’m up to my first proper boss fight and boy oh boy am I just not good at games any more xD

So Dalisclock doesn’t get spoiled, I chose to save Minrathous - mainly because making whoopie with Neve is impossible otherwise - and I don’t know if I’m just thick headed but fighting the dragon feels different to the previous mini bosses and not in the sense of just being more difficult. Technically this isn’t a fight I’m meant to win cos this thing is endgame material so it’s more like a primer but I remember dragons in these games moving a bit ponderously. THIS fucker on the other hand is jumping all over the place and diving at me. This isn’t helped by the stagger mechanic meaning I have to press B to start moving again half the time. And whatever sadist put a hard limit on healing potions; fuck you and the horse you rode in on. Now this isn’t a difficulty complaint, killing or wounding a dragon lich should be hard, but I just feel that this is too much too soon and it shouldn’t be sprung on us the way it was

I’m still enjoying myself but I am feeling fantasy burnout a little so I took a break to play Space Marine II. I don’t know if it helped but never let it be said firing a heavy Bolter isn’t cathartic.

Played a bit more Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. Very fun platforming, and I'm loving the visual style.

Loved this one, and definitely the kind of game I want more of.
It's also the game that made me realize I don't actually like "metroidvanias" as much as I though I did, or rather that I like the idea of them more than actually playing them. It's biggest criticism was that it wasn't much of a metroidvania because there's little backtracking and it's easy to find your way around. Well... ok then, I guess that's fine with me hahah

Yes! Love this one!
I don't normally go in for the 8 or 16 bit thing any more but every couple of years there is one that hits me just right and this was the last one.
Unfortunately I did lose patience at the very end but mostly had a real good time. Good luck with it- some of the stuff is a real PitA to figure out. Well it was for me at least.

Decided to do one of my periodical Gamepass round-robins, where I subscribe for a month and try a bunch of things (still playing Donkey Kong but it's longer than I thought and I was getting a little bored by it so I'm gonna stretch it out and go to it when I just wanna chill for like 30 mins).

First game I tried is Persona 4: Golden.
jRPG is one of those genres I like the idea of and dip my toes into but get frustrated or bored. Turn-based combat could feel torturous and all the giggly Japanese teenage anime nonsense can get in the way of the story and vibe, which are so crucial to these.
Much to my surprise and delight I found myself utterly absorbed by this one. The premise is cool- there's a TV world that kidnaps people, draws out their "shadow self" that you have to defeat so that person can join your team. It's a clever amalgamation of anime tropes and gameplay drivers that works really well.
The turn-based combat flows smoothly enough that I don't mind it. Since combat areas are completely separated from story, I can throw on a podcast or something to burn through a dungeon if I want. But the callouts and music are also not annoying that I didn't mind just grinding through the battles. Even the bosses didn't (yet) feel like stupid health sponges.
The other hook is the calendar schedule where you have to manage your time and choose activities and I have mixed feelings about it- the game keeps telling you about this but then most of the time, at least so far, kind of shoehorns you through activities anyway. So there is that annoying jRPG thing where I'm just pressing the "next" button over and over for half an hour.

I resisted the urge to drop the game difficulty on that boss which for sure is a huge difficulty spike. Dealing with all the menus and items and options is often another turn-off (I deal with the logical equivalent of that crap with work) but I pushed through and did it. That doesn't mean I won't resort to dropping difficulty after like 100 hours to get to the end but being invested in the actual mechanics as well as the story is the hook.

But the story, the gameplay, the music, the vibes- I dig it enough after 10 hours and conquering the first dungeon and serious boss that I want to keep going. Especially since the reward for that boss is the best thing a game could offer- story development, and powerful new team member, a character I want to dig into the social mechanics with, not just XP and a slightly better sword or whatever.

Since I know these games are time sucks and I want to try other stuff (I really did not expect to actually like this) and I screwed up the name I chose of my character, I'm going to buy the Switch version so I can take my time with it and play it in other rooms or while travel (my PC with gamepass is the living room TV I share) and this really does seem like a good cozy curl up on the couch with my anime buds on my handheld machine type of game. That does mean restarting so I'll redo the first 10 hrs on mute while listening to music or whatever, maybe look up a guide to maximize leveling during that time and be better prepared for inevitable future difficult spikes.
