Finally managed to recruit Poo in Earthbound. The path from here splits a little bit, though you can progress them as you see fit until they eventually converge. The most common thing I've noticed is to pursue the fifth and sixth Sanctuaries as soon as they become available; the alternative is to go to Scaraba, through the Pyramid and Deep Darkness. The fifth Sanctuary dungeon is fairly difficult to do right away, but the extra levels help a lot in Deep Darkness especially; as a rule, though, I tend to do the Kraken to reach Scaraba's shops, then go back to the Sanctuaries before continuing to the Pyramid.

Poo's one of the more unique party members in an RPG of the time. He can't use most healing items or equip nearly weapons or armor; in exchange, he can restore PP (mana) more easily than anyone else, letting him cast damaging and healing spells near-endlessly, and the items he can equip are (mostly) very powerful and worth getting. He can be a bit difficult to work with, but he can also perform feats that the others have trouble matching.

I honestly kinda prefer systems like Earthbound where each of the party members are strongly different from each other, but you don't have to try and swap them back and forth to guess what might be the most effective against what's coming up because you just stick with them the whole time. RPGs with a lot of customization tend to throw me for a loop, especially when characters are so customizable they're basically interchangeable (see: FF7, FF8).
Wow, NefedFalcon, I never expected you to be such a big fan of Poo. Most people find Poo pretty off-putting.

Yeah, that's about what I'm into nowadays: games that don't demand much but offer a lot to experience. I started RDR2, and I will continue it someday soon, but it throws so much at you in the way of mechanics and menus, it feels like a bit TOO much for me right now. The vibe outside of the story missions is exactly what I'm looking for, though.

Anyway, played maybe the first 20 minutes of Death Stranding yesterday, and what the fuck? I'm the guy who sided with Microsoft in the Second Great Console War, so my exposure to Hideo Kojima has been limited, though I've heard tell of his "unique" approach to games, but I wasn't expecting this. Literally in the first few minutes: rain that accelerates time and ages of whoever it touches, invisible creatures roaming the land, a "disease" called DOOMS, oh, and a baby in perhaps its third trimester (but clearly cognizant and aware) is being carried around in a wearable tank. What the fuck, dude? And that's not a complaint; I like weird shit, and so far, this shit is weird. Will play more today.
Death Stranding was also my first real Kojima experience. It was quite a ride. I still don't understand what happened despite the 30 hours of cutscenes.

Tell me you're being hyperbolic; there can't be 30 hours of cutscenes. I've heard tell that Kojima's games are heavily doused in cinematics, but 30 hours sounds pretty egregious. Though I did note that in the 20 minutes I spent with it, I only "played" for about 5 of those minutes. In fact, I only stopped because I had very little time to play, and had "watched" so much, I opted to quit the second I was given the reins because I didn't want to get stuck in another cutscene. I don't mind cutscenes if they're substantive, and so far these have been gorgeous and ignited my imagination, but I sincerely hope this isn't the majority of the experience.

There's lots of gameplay. It only feels like 30 hours of cutscenes, Google is telling me there's only 10.

I hope you play the whole thing, I'm excited to hear your reactions to the game.

Still playing Cassette Boy. Some of the latter dungeons phone it in a bit. The first three are great but the game becomes a roguelite for the fourth and you have to trudge across 20 randomly generated levels that don't even acknowledge the central mechanic of fiddling with perspective. Then there's "dungeons" five and six, which are over before you even realize you completed them. Bit disappointing.

A little 9 hours into Tainted Grail, and the good first impressions have faded a fair bit. Once you get out of the tutorial and into the open world, the game simply can't hide its AA budget and eastern european jank. It's a very ambitious game, and the studio clearly shot for the moon. But there's stuff all the effort and passion in the world simply can't overcome.

The world feels rigid and lifeless mainly for a reason I wasn't expecting: the background ambience, or rather lack of such. It's weird to notice something I've never consciously paid attention to stand out so much by its absence. But there's just too little background noise to give the impression of a living world. It's not nonexistent: there's waves crashing, occasional bird sounds, leaves rustling. But compared to, say, Skyrim, where in dungeons there's always the sound of the wind whistling somewhere, water dripping, cracking of stone, and of course Jeremy Soule's music, the ambience is just so much more layered. In Tainted Grail it makes immersion that much harder to come by, when you stop in the middle of the dungeon and it's just dead silence.

There's some rather hefty jank to the gameplay. Hit detection with the bow seems to be all over the fucking place. Like a dozen times I've lined up a perfect shot, only for the arrow to seemingly evaporate mid-air. Because there's so little indication as to the arrow's path, there's basically no way to know if you're doing something wrong other than trial and error. The AI, while fairly decent in open spaces, basically breaks the moment more than 2 NPCs have to navigate any kind of narrow space. Multiple times I've shamelessly cheesed groups of enemies by plinking them to death with my bow while they do a Three Stooges doorway routine. The game shows its Skyrim roots in one of the most infuriating ways: inventory clutter. When adventuring you're constantly picking up all sorts of garbage for crafting, and whoops surprise, now all your inventory space is taken up by random flowers, iron ore, cooking ingredients and other clutter. You can obviously mod it out, but it's just jarring why the team decided to keep this most infuriating of Skyrim's foibles.

On the leveling side I'm kind of two ways about it: I like how stats actually matter for gear, and you have to start leveling with some sort of intent pretty early on. You can't just put on every plate mail armor you want, you have to level your stats for it. The skill trees are nothing to write home about, but then again neither are Skyrim's, and their straightforwardness is kind of endearing for a lower-budget game. The thing I'm wondering about is the scaling. I'm level 13, and it's already feeling like I'm not keeping up with the enemies. This could maybe be because I haven't properly engaged with all the systems yet, but it doesn't feel great nonetheless.

Still, the fact that I've kept with it this long despite still being in the first zone, and intend to play more speaks for itself. As mentioned, the writing is quite good, and has that specifically Polish, Witcher-reminiscient sardonic sense of humor, where characters might be lost in their lives, alcoholics or dying, but they at least crack jokes about it. It's a good world for roleplaying a cold, amoral character. The story is genuinely interesting, and presents a very interesting moral dilemma which I'm waiting to start unfurling at some point. So yeah, it's a 7/10 if there ever was one, but I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Got all Chaos Emeralds but lost my remaining lives to the last boss, finishing this Sonic 1 playthrough without a score, which pissed me off. Tried a few times in the last few days, always quitting when I knew that I couldn't get all six emeralds. The last level with the ripped off Blade Runner theme throws so much at you, so the final emerald has to be gotten before. I know how to beat the last boss easily, but it was so long since I last played through this.

Bear in mind that you'll need to have it plugged by cable if you want high quality and tolerable latency, if you wanna go wireless, you'll be sacrificing either or.
Ordered a used Galaxy Tab A9+ 11", small enough that it will fit under my monitor. Yes, I plan to use it with a USB cable.
Wanted to use the tablet as a second monitor for my 40 inch 21:9, but it never worked out right. Now it's my biggest display with my stuff in storage and me living in a hotel until I don't know when. Was smart enough to bring my 8BitDo M30. Did not bring a stick controller because I didn't expect to play 3D games. Lemuroid works better for me than Retroarch on Android. With Retroarch I couldn't easily punch backwards by pressing B and C in Streets of Rage 2. The Retroarch UI is a terrible clusterfuck anyway.

Had to follow these instructions to map the buttons in Lemuroid.

I think it is MG3 on PS3 where you're gaming yourself (as Solid Snake), he's sitting on a couch and a voice tells him to put down the controller so he can tell him something. Then says, "No, really. Put down the controller". And it was time to stop gaming and listen to a cut scene.
Was playing, "We Happy Few" with cheats and a thing that happens using "Wand": the game will in some way or another, stop working. Fun game though. Pretty visuals, a bit amusing, didn't seem to stress my hardware.

Confession: Despite how many times I've played Earthbound by now, I've never gotten a Sword of Kings before. I've tried a few times, but every time I got to Stonehenge, I just gave up and moved on without it. It's not like it's necessary or even that useful to beat the game, but it is a status symbol. So, in the interest of doing something different, this time I'm gonna go for it again and see if I can actually get it.

I really hope I do manage to get it before I hit level 99, or too close to it, because that'd make things way harder later on (Ness's major endgame power spike requires him to gain a level before it actually hits). But, guess it's all up to my luck. I've had some pretty insane luck in Runescape and multiple gacha games before, so we'll see how it goes.

Finished Cassette Boy. I liked it enough. As far as adventure puzzle games go it's not quite on the same level as stuff like Fez or Tunic. It doesn't have their sense of mystery, for one thing. Your basic understanding of how the game works, and what it hides from you, will never change much. And I still think some of the dungeons phone it in a bit. There're 4 really good ones, 1 that's just OK and 3 that just feel either uninspired or unfinished.

Not to harp too much on it because I think it's a pretty good game and from a solo developer too. I had a fun time with it. It's just that I feel it doesn't quite make the most of itself.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

This game is sort of lucky it’s opening salvo party members are so much fun because the jank is fucking real. I’m not very good at pure isometric cRPG games and while this one is more forgiving than those it is systematically based on - Pathfinder - it’s still deeply annoying. Also there’s not reason at all that once you pick up Sister Argenta that every enemy that isn’t an experienced Psyker or the Chaos Spawn aren’t just automatically dying since they’re mainly serfs in no armour or armour made of heshin bags and she’s a fully kitted out Adeptus Sororitas with her trusty Godwyn-pattern Bolter. In fact I'd argue that one of the worst things about all the 40k based games I've played thus far, is that the Bolter never feels as powerful in use as it does on paper.j

That said, it’s still fun enough to brute force my way through but I fear repeat playthroughs will be marred with having to play the prologue again because so far as I’ve observed there’s not many critical path things that occur. And unlike more free roaming action games you can’t just speed run it.

Also you can't romance the Sororitas. 0 Stars xD
When you say jank, do you mean performance? Or just the general clunkiness of the gameplay? It's one of the few games I'm interested in that's playable on Mac but I have a feeling it may be too much for my Macbook Air.

Headed to Velen with Ciri after the Wild Hunt fiasco. I’m realizing the older I get the less patience I have for scripted cinematic battle sequences. Or at least the kind that have you running around like an idiot while someone’s screaming instructions.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Been playing On Your Tail, its a rather difficult puzzle game disguised as a cozy game. It really is very charming, you play as a young woman who wants to be a writer but after a rough assessment from her professor she finds herself in a small Italian seaside town called Borgo Marina. As soon as you arrive a strange thief causes you to crash your Vispa and starts off the mystery of the town. The game is loaded with interesting characters, it has a lot of different puzzle minigames, there are certain characters you can get closer to and have specific hangouts with or they can just follow you around and comment on things.

The main puzzle minigame mechanic is using your detective mode thing to figure out the order of events which lead to something and its pretty good, but a bit slow, especially when things get more complicated. The game does suffer from not being properly localized, you can tell the devs knew english, but it wasn't a first language so some sentences are kinda weird.

It also has certain aspects that feel amateurish, not half baked, but just like they didn't have the experience needed to really realize them. Like you can tell they really wanted the town to be one connected area with no loading, but they couldn't figure it out and had to include some, also the way the camera moves takes some getting used too, its a bit too locked to the character and moves kinda weird. I also stumbled onto a quest trigger before the story got me to the island it started on, so I missed some story leading up there and was confused, but it didn't break anything. But other then that, its very charming and has got its grips on me nicely.

The jank is purely from a mechanical perspective. I play on an impressive rig for 2020 if you'll forgive the gold-plated wankery of that statement but it ran plenty well.

I made it to the end of Paper Mario at level 7, which is the lowest level I believe is possible without hacks. The Lava Piranha and Final Bowser were definitely the hardest fights in the game relying on the charge and powerbounce badges as I was. Lava piranha since it required perfect guards to charge up both Mario and Goombario simultaneously to finish off both forms back to back. Bowser was just plain annoying since he does a blast with the star rod that will debuff you even if you block it, so there's a heavy amount of luck whether or not you will be Out of Sight with Bow.

Now I'm playing Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. The writing is still very funny like the first game and the adventure game elements are still very frustrating at times. I got stuck pretty hard on the first island at a couple points. One was that it took me a long time to think to fill the bucket with water from the swamp, there's water everywhere and I never really made the connection that it was a real interaction point. Another was when trapping the rat. I had the cheesy twists, and found I could open the box and put them in, and thought I should be able to tie the string on to the box. That didn't work because apparently I needed to prop it open with the stick (which was way too big when I picked it up). That was all compounded by the fact that I didn't actually understand why I was trapping the rat in the first place.

But still, it's fun. I love that you can use the pick up command on Captain Kate like 20 times for her to shoot down your pick up lines over and over, they were really good.
"Want to see my scar?" "No thanks, I've seen lobotomies before."
"What's your sign?" "No trespassing."
"If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?" "Just the part with the knuckles."

How long did it take?
About five hours, two soft resets, two times I got baited by Super Bomb drops (Atomic Power Robot), and even speaking as someone who plays an MMO, a grind that just wasn't any fun. And while I won't claim that the Sword of Kings doesn't make a noticeable improvement on Poo's regular attacks, a lot of it was also him having a much higher level than I'm used to, and he tends towards using a lot of PSI anyway. It just isn't worth it.

Anyway, got to the entrance of Fire Spring now. I could probably knock out the game in one more session depending on how that and Magicant go; the last section after that tends to be pretty smooth sailing despite enemies bringing Starstorm, a lot of Diamondize, and the return of the Atomic Power Robot's frequent random full heals.

Oh, that's not so bad. I remember trying to get a Lucky Egg in Pokemon Crystal and I spent around 12 hours catching chansey and that was at double speed using Pokemon Stadium 2.

Edit: No wait. I lied. Looks like I tried for 10 hours then gave up and used a glitch.

I managed a no death run of Spike Out: Final Edition. I used White. I have not played this game since the early 2000s. It's nice to have this game on disc, even though I had to buy Pirate Yakuza to play it. Good news, I got Pirate Yakuza on sale, so it's not like a paid full price. Back on topic, the game is pretty much 3D Streets of Rage 4, but not in name. There are at least two character analogues to Axel and Blaze. This game is the most late 90s SEGA Arcadey game ever made by SEGA. The game has alternate paths it does not tell you and you have to figure out on your own. You can go up to 4 player, but make sure you have the equal amount of controllers to how many you have with you. The game will split into different and smaller square screens, so I suggest playing this on big screen, if you got it. I'll probably do a different character run later on.
