So I finished Selaco last weekend. Ending left a lot to be desired, tho since the game is not actually finished yet and there's an entire part 2 to come, I'll let it slide (sic). Aside from that it was a fun and wild ride. Haven't enjoyed fire fights this tense since FEAR, which is obviously what they're going for. I particularly enjoyed the shotgun. Oooh baby, what a shotgun. It looks chunky. It sounds chunky. It makes chunky. And all the secrets, some of which I have no idea how you're supposed to figure them out without a guide. Tho I'm very proud to have found by myself a secret so secret it's not even counted in the tracker, after having found out you can get repeatedly jump and grab on a prop to infinitely climb in mid air HL2 prop climbing style, then used this to get onto rooftops in open air areas. Pretty much pointless, since there's nothing to see. Except in one case, where I found an assault rifle mod and a message from the dev. Anyway, the mod give the AR a secondary fire mode that's basically an infinite ammo version of the Quake 3 BFG10K. Turned it back off since it's ludicrously overpowered and can hose down one of the big miniboss guys in like 2 seconds.
I've also been using the free three months game pass trial I for some reason was entitled to, to basically demo games I was a little bit interested in, but not enough to wanna risk a purchase. So far I've used it to play:
South of Midnight: bit simple yet also kinda janky on the gameplay side, and combat becomes kinda laughably easy with some of the upgrades. But I was invested enough in the plot to wanna see it through to the end. Looks pretty too, and comes with a slick soundtrack. Some nice creature designs, tho I have no idea why the rougarou is a bird monster, the name is derived from the French word for werewolf, but whatever. Fine at the price of free.
Unpacking: you open boxes, and but stuff in its place. That's it. But it makes for a relaxing zen experience that triggers those neurons in your brain that fire whenever a game lets you decorate your in-game house. And it actually has a story, of a young woman in various stages of her life, told entirely through just her things. Had I bought it, wouldn't have regretted it.
Doom The Dark Ages: dropped it after an hour when it became apparent it triples down on Doom Eternal's meter managment & fps rock paper scissors gameplay, except it's now all about the punch and the shield, and the guns feel like an afterthought, only really effective against the lowest fodder. This ain't what I want from Doom.
