My favourite kind would have to be... whatever Captain Falcon is.

... Smash Bros. ftw.

The only fighting game I really play is Mortal Kombat, and I try to avoid using characters that rely on teleport attacks. I always feel cheap when I load up Smoke or Scorpion.

I usually go for more heavy characters like Jax or Kano, since Jax is pretty good once you memorize the ground pound moves, and Kano has cannonball.

I like playing underdog characters because if you loose people are kind of like "well of course you lost. You played X" and if you win their soul is broken because their top tier character lost to a minimum tier character. Plus everyone loves an underdog.

So ill play Dan in street fighter, Baraka in MK, and Bane in Injustice and I have a lot of fun with them.

I tend to gravitate towards two different types: the straightforward brawler and the complete weirdo (the creepier, the better). I tend to like any character who gets up in your face and punches you, especially in a game where most of the characters are armed. And I love it when all I have to do to make my opponent cringe is select my character. :3

Guilty Gear: Slayer, Zappa
Bloody Roar: Shina, Alice, Yugo, Busuzima
Soul Calibur: Mitsurugi, Raphael, Voldo
Tekken: Anna, Devil
Rage of the Dragons: Pepe/Pupa, Alice/Elias

I have this aspiration to get good with all the really weird fighting game characters. Right now, though, the only one I'm really good with is Zappa. Someday I will master Voldo, and on that day, my maniacal laughter will be long and loud.

MK: Jonny Cage, fuck your Iceballs, fuck your firey spears, fuck your acid saliva, IMMA PUNCH YOU IN THE DICK!

Injustice: The God damn Aquaman, because hes the God Damn Aquaman.

Tekken : Kazuya, I just find him fun to play as.

Smash Bros: Captain Falcon and Fox, love their speed

Sony Smash Bros: Raiden off of MGRR.

What does this guy counts as?

Eddy Gordo from Tekken 3

As a general rule I would probably go with medium to slightly lighter characters because no matter how much damage a heavy character can do in one punch there's always the risk that they'll never actually get to throw that one punch if they're being severely outpaced by an opponent.

Fast and jumpy. But it varies. Though I do try to just find who I am best with. For example apparently Im best with Kano in Mortal Kombat 1.

In terms of design, I do like effeminate males (since I am one), so despite not knowing how to use him much in game, I like Ash Crimson from KoF.

I do seem to also favor heavy hitters sometimes though too, since my main in Tekken is Bryan Fury, and my second main in Street Fighter is Sagat (First is Vega, which as I said, I like fast and jumpy)

Throw in Ivy and (MK2011's) Reptile in there somewhere and there ya go.

1st Criteria: Attractive woman.
2nd Criteria: Super mobile with versatile normals OR super strong neutral game.

King of Fighters: Kula, Athena ("Psycho BOOOOMB"), Mai.

I could list other games, but the truth is I don't play anything else enough to have selected my mains.

Ken is my favourite kind. He does a lot of damage and can take just enough punishment for you to make one or two mistakes.

Superman is another favourite but its widely accepted that Superman is OP.

Combo machines are my thing, up close and personal ones. I hate ranged characters, playing keep-away is the most boring way to play a fighting game for me, I like jumping in and kicking ass by pulling off relatively difficult combos (I don't like characters who can grab you into a combo with zero effort, f.ex. Green Lantern in Injustice who can grab you out of the air [impossible to block] at range). Basically, anything that feels skilled to both start and execute a combo.

It's more up to character than play style for me. Favorites include Rachel Alucard(BlazBlue), Bridget, A.B.A.(Guilty Gear), Tira(Soul), Juri, Poison(Street Fighter/xTekken), Zero(MvC), Elizabeth(Persona),Pikachu, Pichu, Peach(SSB). Also if the trend wasn't clear it almost always needs to be a female character.

I tend to favor the idea of Zoning and Traps but I'm not good at fighting games so whatever.
The only time I've ever not played my favorite character (by measure of character) in a game for reasons of play style was Tira in Soul Calibur 3 because I could not even begin to wrap my head around her inputs so I just used custom Dancer, this changed in 4 where Simultaneous inputs on Tira could look cool and win against AI on their own as long as you had some pre-baked combos to control your stance.

I'm your friend for life for posting up an Urban Reign video...OMG. I need to get a used PS2 slim to play that again, cuz I still have the game, just no system. Yes, I hope NamDai dust it off someday but HOWEVER...I call challenge on it being the greatest brawler of all time, because Streets Of Rage.

On topic: I'm more of a guy for aesthetics. I like characters that are visually appealing. It's what I call the "shallow" selection system. I hate intentionally "ugly" characters. (OH MY GOD I'M FUCKING CLAW RIGHT NOW!!!) [footnote]"Claw" is the universal FGC term used for the Spanish ninja boss character in the Street Fighter series, since depending on region he's named either Vega or Balrog. You already know why that is.[/footnote] So I tend to gravitate towards the more attractive female characters and bad ass males. I get behind them regardless of their style and learn to use them.

I like the ones that are fun. I love Blazblue because all the characters are awesome, but Rawrgna are Taokaka are my favorites. Naoto is my favorite P4 character so I play her in Arena, and I cosplay her so I can be Naoto playing Naoto. Dante is my favorite videogame character ever so of course I play him in UMvC and Ammy is always on the team because d'aawww puppy!

In case you can't tell I'm a fighting game genius here :p

Hmmm I'd have to say any character with a ranged attack that supports their 'up close and personal' attacks.

Valentine from Skullgirls comes to mind.
I also liked DFO's Nen Fighter class. Such a great class, great game, shitty company thou.

Also, I really like Dante and Doctor Strange for Ultimate MVC...
Carl and Noel in Blazblue..
Both Female Slayer classes in CDNF...

I'm... actually not sure, exactly... I usually doing think about it too much, but whenever I do play a fighting game, if there's a character I tend to be more well-verse with (kind of) than the other characters, then I tend to play them more often...

For example, since Melee, I have become one of the "better" players of Mr. Game and Watch around my neighborhood... You may think I'm just button-mashing, but that's just the facade when I bring down the key! Top it with a score of 7 or 8 for good measure before headbutting you to submission... (*maniacal laugh* Whoops! I did it again...) Except when I'm playing Brawl, then I'm one of the "better" players of R.O.B... I won't tell you how those matches go down, but I will say you just don't "fuck" with R.O.B... period...

Anyway, other characters I seem to play more than others are:

Talim; Kilik; Maxi; Xiba*; Sophitia*; Xianghua* (Soul Calibur)
Noel; Makoto; Taokaka; Bang^; Litchi*; Lambda-11*; Jin* (Blazblue: Continuum Shift Extend)
Ms. Fortune; Peacock; Valentine; Cerebella* (Skullgirls)
Yukiko; Yosuke; Teddie; Aigis* (Persona 4 Arena)

I would list characters from KoF 13, but it's been a LONG while since I've touched that game... I kinda remember which fighters I played more of from Soul Calibur, but then again, the last I played that was during this one gaming meetup where we were all playing custom MLP characters from SC4... I do remember playing as Phoenix Wright A LOT when I used to own UMvC3...

Other than that, if you can find some pattern to my choices, then more power to ya...

*sometimes
From what i see you focus on medium/light characters. I count cerebella as a heavy but other than that it seems like more all around/rushdown fighting styles are your thing.

I like more of a medium all around character but I'll play some rushdown characters if I'm in the mood.
Capcom vs snk 2: Hibiki, kyosuke, Iori/ryu
Street fighter 4: juri/ryu
Persona 4: yu narukami, labrys, and sometimes yosuke
Blazblue: ragna and litchi
Guilty gear: sol, eddie/zato-1, may, ky
Brawl/melee: link or marth
Dead or alive: single: kokoro tag: hitomi and kokoro
Umvc3: Phoenix wright/morrigan, chun-li, felicia
Soul calibur: maxi, kilik, xianghua

Well, now... I've learned something today! Then again, I never liked playing defensively (let alone take the time to actually block most incoming combos, when needed to), which is one of my major flaws whenever I'm in a standard match with someone... *shifty eyes*

Actually, I find it funny when I do use Cerebella, since I tend to use her like a regular rushdown character while mistaking her Vise Verse attacks as a "zoning"/"poking" tactic... "Get away from me! TITAN KNUCKLE!! Back off! TITAN KNUCKLE!!"[footnote]Repeat tactic throughout most of said match... Sad, I know...[/footnote]

I say cerebella is the heavy of skullgirls because in my opinion she is the slowest(and is the only one I've seen without a dash) but she can take the most punishment and once the opponent makes a mistake she gives that damage right back. I mostly use the dragon punch spinning move whenever in a tight spot because it can launch your opponent to the other side of the screen so you can escape.
