They're hilarious, like watching dogs and cats freak-the-fuck-out when you turn on a hoover...Except it's people, but its still the same "HOLY SHIT A SUDDEN LOUD NOISE. THE WORLD IS ENDING AND I CAN ONLY STOP IT BY MELODRAMATICALLY SCREAMING" reaction.

If it wants to actually be scary, PA needs to take some lessons from this mythos -

It's a pretty divisive horror series, to be honest. Everyone seems to love it or hate it. Personally? I think they're good fun. Especially for the miniscule budget they're filmed on?the first one in particular. They're certainly not masterpieces of horror. But they're a solid American horror flick, and that's something you don't really see too often. Most of the terror comes from shock value though as opposed to anything that's actually scary, and 9/10 the acting isn't very good, though I suppose you could chalk that one up to the realism factor. That being said, I feel like watching them in theatres makes them a lot less scary. It's honestly hard for the tention to build up when there are seventy other people watching it with you, it's definitely a bit more frightening if you watch 'em late night in your living room with the lights out.

Not to be rude but did everyone happen to see Event Horizon as kids? I just saw it recently and I got to say I was not that impressed. It was fun, in a schlocky kind of way, and I love how nuts it went in the third act but it is still a basic Alien knock off but with no fleshed out characters and some dated effects (except for the make up and practical effects, those were great).

Truly truly awful? Seriously like you I know loads of people that go on and on about how it?s so scary etc. I watched the first and sat there though out the entire thing think ?okay, the really scary part will happen any minute?. Any minute now?? Then the film ended.
Seriously, I?m pretty sure this is scarier:

Saw the first one, with the original not-Spielberg ending, and I have to say it was quite good. It was subtle, didn't show, left things open to imagination. That scares me, alright. Much better than showing monsters. If you have imagination, Paranormal Activity does a great job making your own fears and monsters fill up the empty spaces, what it does not show. In that regard, a lot of horror films should learn from it.

Not the alpha and omega of terror, but certainly way above most stuff being done in the genre.

Liked the first one, did not see the other two.

I really like all three. I'm so happy that they contributed to the decline of the Saw franchise, because I thought they were taking horror movies in the wrong direction... to much gore, no suspense, and just the "why are we watching someone rip out their own eye" factor, ala Human Centipede.

I like them and support them because it shows that you don't need a huge budget to make suspenseful, subtle films that scare the pants off people. Wouldn't recommend seeing them in theaters, because the crowd is so obnoxious.

Never seen any of them, well except for about 20 minutes of the first one. Caught it on tv once. It was good, not really that scary, but at this point I don't really get scared that much by movies anymore.

I fell asleep during the 1st one because it couldn't keep me entertained. I'm not sure how it was supposed to be scary because nothing happened.

Well I prefered it before it became a SAW like franchise. They're great "one time only" thrillers that rely on sound, darkness and ones own imagination more then visual horror or torture porn. They're not exactly scary, but then most of us horror watchers are so desensitised to everything that very little DOES actually scare us now. It's super fun to watch it with someone who is scared easily though.

Ulitmately their niche, one time movies, that don't appeal to the youtube generation. You know, the ones that want ACTION ALL THE TIME NOW NOW HORROR BLOOD SCARES OR THIS IS THE MOST BORING SHIT I'VE SEEN. But that's fine. There's plenty of movies that do cater to them. I'm glad some old school pyschological ones are trying to make a come back. Not 100% successfully... but at least they tried.
