People consider System of a Down to be that good?

I mean, I can understand it with U2, they're good in their earlier days and they're very political, people like that kinda stuff. And I know SOAD is political as well but I just found them annoying.

OT....really any mainstream music is awful or at the very least overrated.

oh man you should hear my friends just go on and on about how totally awesome SOAD is and how they're the greatest band evar...

Really? What do they say about them? All I ever hear is that "I'm a fan of them and I like their music"

Nothing much more than that.

they're always talking about how they're the most politically conscious and purest form of metal ever created and how every other band shrivels beneath their might like it's a cold day in the locker room... not in those exact words obviously but you get the point... the funny thing is that they used to say the same thing about Rage Against The Machine, but now all they say about them is how pretentious they were and how much they dislike Tom Morello... it's really quite perplexing...

Purest form of metal my ass!! Just a bunch of annoying guitar solos and high pitched ridiculous screaming.

Politically conscious maybe but not the most. Yeah, the reference the government a few times in their singles but that doesn't make them political geniuses.

And I like Rage Against the Machine, damn it!!! They've got the most balls of any band I've ever seen. Watching them take an American flag on stage, turn it upside down and spray paint "666" on it in front of the National Guard was one of the funniest things I've ever seen!

Yeah, I used really like system (and still like their first album quite a bit), but they're far from lyrical geniuses. Their lyrics are usually insanely stupid, ham fisted, or both. I re listened to toxicity lately and the lyrics just pissed me off. The first album is nice and obtuse for the most part, and the slightly deranged nature suits it.

And yes, Tom morello is a way better guitarist than Daron Malakian.
They're also fucking awesome live.

And I won't put U2 here, because I'm actually a fan, but not the "they can do no wrong" kind but the kind that loves stuff they don't even play on their concerts anymore and I can totally see how people think they're overhyped.
Rolling stones and Beatles, Bob Dylan - I don't listen to them often, but I can see how they shaped modern music and a lot of their songs are genius.

Radiohead is in my opinion the single most overrated band in musical history. I don't care how innovative or original they are, their music is boring at best and painful at worst. And yet every single music critic can't gush enough about them.

Coming in second is the Kings of Leon. Most of their stuff is pretty decent, but "Use Somebody" was the single most annoying song of 2009. And they are not the "saviors of rock and roll".

Never heard their first album, but I did like Toxicity even if the lyrics were stupid. It was just something to entertain me for a while. I never listened to lyrics with any seriousness and if I ever did, I found myself laughing at how ridiculous they are. Go listen to that song "Needle" and I gurantee you'll laugh at the lyrics. It's just stupid. Stupid in a good way but still stupid.

They really lost me when I heard that album with "BYOB" on it. I can't remember the name but the songs on there were just so annoying and frantic sounding that it made me literally throw the disc out of my moving car.

Don't even get me started on their live performances. Goddamn, it's like they all have down syndrome or something....

Not really a fan of JLS though, not as good as nearly everyone makes out. Probably because they are a X-Factor band but their behind the scenes behaviour is pretty shitty. One guy dumped his girlfriend because, and I loosely quote from a newspaper, "She wasn't good enough for him now he was famous." Bit of a dick, that guy sounds. So outside of them, I can't really think of any band that's over-rated.

I actually have SOAD's Toxicity and Mezmerize albums. I also own a Green Day CD and a RHCP CD.
I always hear SOAD is an amazing band and Serj Tankian is a godly singer but they're really not that great

It seemed by the time I left, everyone was obsessed with Slipknot metal wise.

oh god, so many people in here don't understand what the Beatles hype was about. It isn't about what their music is today people! You can stop saying that you were told they were the best band ever!

NO! you've been told that they were the most influential band ever. That is an objective stand point right there. They did more for music than any other band in modern history, that isn't hype, that's truth.

But when you have high school kids acting like it's sacrilege to not like their music, they've started to get overrated. And that has happened to me. Within the past five years.

Other than The Beatles, I'd have to go with AC/DC, Metallica, and Kings of Leon. And I actually don't mind AC/DC, and I like Metallica's older stuff (Death Magnetic was too little, too late).

I don't think anything is really overrated. People just have different tastes, and if you can't accept that then it's your problem not theirs. I may not like a few bands here and there, but that doesn't mean I think they don't deserve their following. It's not like they put a gun up to their fan's heads and threatened to kill them if they didn't listen to their music and like it.
