I was listening to this song:
and was listening to the lyrics:
For every man there is a cause which he would proudly die for
Defend the right to have a place for which he can belong to
And every man will fight with his bare hands in desperation
And shed his blood to stem the flood to barricade invasion.
For every man there is a cause which he would proudly die for
Defend the right to have a place for which he can belong to
And if we go and fight, we face their hearts in desperation
and shed his blood to stem the flood of an impending invasion
When one line stuck out at me:For every man there is a cause which he would proudly die for.
So that's my question to you what's your cause you would proudly die for?
Mine is the protection of my family.

The cause you would die for is to protect yourself? seems like a paradox there pal.

I haven't found a cause worth dying for at the moment. Probably too young, need more time to find one. Dying for family is a loss/loss situation, either you die and your family is now left bereft or they die and you're left depressed. Nobody wins.

I've thought about it and I've come to the conclusion that if anything was to happen to my friends/family/strangers, I would be prepared to die

Not sure if naive dreams about being a "hero" or if I'm prepared to die for the sake of others, but I've decided that's what I'll do

I don't know. I've never been in a situation where I had to choose between my own life and something I care about. I have no idea what decision I'd make until I actually got there. I could be a complete coward or a total badass, but I've never even come close to anything that would bring out those qualities in me. I hope I never do.

I'm in the military, so I suppose the proper answer would be "I would totally lay down my life for my country" but again, I don't know. I'd like to think that truthfully nobody knows until they actually have to choose. It seems weird to me to know in advance what you'd be willing to die for, except perhaps your children. But I'm not a parent, either, so again, I dunno.

I don't see all that much value for my life depressingly enough. Given I haven't been afraid of death for something like 8 years now.... I 'could' die for just about anything. It's not really an issue.
However, I extend this opinion to most people in the 1st world. If you live through a consumer-driven materialistic perspective where the opinions and values of others are worth more than your own and you fear confrontation, change and self-examination - Your life doesn't mean anything. If you don't read, don't think deeply of the world, don't see value in the life around you and believe you're by birth-right of being a human are worthy of respect and deserve boons - your life also, doesn't mean anything.

I would not die for you. I would not fight for you. I would not bat an eye at your suffering.

Though what my father used to tell me "Don't think 'What would I die for?' Think 'What would I fight for?'"

A drowning random stranger? But wouldn't you rather save the dog? The stranger might a rapist or a murderer.

I'd say family and if war broke out my country.
Defend it 'till I fall, or until I am left standing.

Hoo, that's a hard one.
Of course, I don't think I'd REALLY know what I'd die for until, well, I find something that's in immediate danger and I'm willing to give my life to remove it from the path of said danger.
That said, I think if for some reason, world peace could be attained by my death, I would gladly make that sacrifice.
I know some people around here don't like the idea of world peace for whatever reasons but seriously, I'm tired of the world being so bleak and depressing. Granted, conflict is just ONE problem that plagues God's green earth but hey, it's a start.

Well, it's kinda hard to say since I've never been in that kind of situation, and to be honest I'm pretty scared of death, but at least in theory it would be anything in the following 3 categories.

1. Saving the life of a close family member, preferably one younger than me.

2. Saving a large number of lives, not really sure what the number would have to be.

3. Defending a right or value I believe in that will benefit the whole of society, martyrdom basically. It would have to be something pretty important though, I'm not dying just so you can all smoke weed legally or anything like that.

NO! BAD! Now go sit in the corner and think about what you've done.

OT: I'd die for a lot, my life has a comparably small value against most of the things and people I love in this world.
I've thought about it and this is my level of readiness.

I'd die for a perfect stranger.
I'd risk my life for a dog.
I'd fight for an insect.
I'd stay out of nothing.

To be fair I have been conditioned by all forms of media my whole life to believe dying honorably is a good thing.

Probably nothing. Yes yes, call me a selfish bastard, but dying is just so damn final, so I'd prefer to stay alive.

OT - Nothing, I'm not much selfish as I am a person who doesn't waste stuff

I imagine there are a few things I would willingly die for if it came to that. Until faced with such a prospect the only thing I know I would willingly give my life for is the life of my niece. No hesitation on that one.

Honest answer there and one I think I have to go with too.

Let's say that I die to protect someone I care about. With that I have no way of making sure that person will stay safe. If I was able to protect that person when I was alive, dying wont remove the danger.

This is all so far fetched to me since I have never really been in danger of losing my life or in a situation where I had to protect someone so I might be wrong. I might have it in me, but I don't think so and I think my reasons are quite solid.

"You only have one life but you can find another five causes on any street corner." Terry Pratchett

That being said I think I would die for my friends. They're better people than I am and are more important.

Family, for sure. No question about that. Friends? If I had any...

...forever alone...

Actually, yes. I've been in one situation where I jumped into traffic to pull a friend OUT of the traffic before he got hit or run over. It was at college and he was borderline legless drunk. Actually I'd been a drinking a little, too (I don't drink any more), so I don't know if that qualifies. You could just rate that as sheer, unthinking stupidity.

I always found this to be an odd question because I can never understand what is actually being asked. Is the question what cause(s) I would willingly and with 100% certainty give up my life for or is the question what what cause(s) I would be willing to put myself in high risk of death for?

The answer would be quite different. I would imagine I could conceivably take part in a guerrilla resistance with a high risk of bullet to the face if my country had been occupied. Especially seeing as I would in all likelihood already have been drafted. I would not kamikaze myself into an enemy warship however even if it was for the same cause.

If I had kids (which I don't, yet) I could imagine I could do both for their sake however.
