'Slightly more' makes me mad. In the older editions, Blink Dogs were as intelligent as people and could even talk. That's right, talking teleporting pack hunters.

1st/2nd/3rd all pretty much list them as being intelligent with a complex language of barks, yaps, wines and growls. 1st is the only one to directly compare them to the average human in intelligence. B/X actually list them simply as being highly intelligent.

So there is a bit of wiggle room, I would probably run them more like a pack of dolphins than fully intelligent creatures.

I thought the same thing (it is an oddly attractive mind flayer), but I played as a mind flayer once, and they're hermaphrodites, who I'm pretty sure reproduce asexually. BTW, i got Mind Flayer as well.
