What defines Emo?

This is a very simple question yet the answer, to me, is all over the place. What I mean with that is that in my country, as soon as you tell another person how you feel and if you're okay with that or not, you're an emo. In other countries or other people believe being emo means you have a stupid hairdo and cut yourself in the morning when you haven't slept well. Well known examples of so-called emo people to me is the main character from Twilight (I forgot his name because it wasn't important enough to remember) and Chris Tucker (or whatshisface) from the infamous YouTube video: 'Leave Britney alone'.

Personally, I think this word is waaaaaaaaay to overused. In some respects it should be used, sure, but in my country it's ridiculous on how quick this word gets thrown at you whenever you do something 'different'. But that's just my opinion.

So I as The Escapist on how they define the word: 'emo' and what it implies.

Oh you didn't just confuse them two people, please.

OT: Emo to me is just the pussy version of Goth. Poser's/ Wannabe's of their darker brethren.

I define it based on its origins; someone who is overly emotional and prone to depression and things alike this can include people who self harm, angsty teenagers, girls who are moody and cant get a boy so fall in love with a sparkly vampire etc etc.

The word has kind of outgrown its meaning and become overused as you've stated. It's a cool word for young people to throw around when they cant be bothered to have a formulated opinion about something it seems to me. As a for instance, when I used to play WoW there were elements of the guild where if someone complained that they were on sitout from raids too often they were branded and declared as emo and treated to comments like /wrists. It even has its own style which I like to call 'not quite goth.'

The black hair, usually with another colour dyed in it and usually over one eye is 'emo' to me, as well as those who cut and or are depressed all the time. Generally music which sounds like someones just complaining about life in a whingy way I also class as emo music. It's a descriptive word that if I was to say then people would understand what I mean.

Some always get angry when people use the word, but words are always going to change what they mean. Like that f word that we use for cigarette.

It's wearing black, cutting yourself to relieve the pain of living a relatively easy life in a quiet suburb with your well meaning parents, stupid hair cut, unnecessary piercings, and generally being a total chode.

Emo is a funny term in that, if you can class yourself as one, then you probably aren't one.
What I'm saying is that, there's proper emos, and there's the people who just adopt the style and claim to be one.

It's more the way of thinking than anything that defines an emo.
I think.

Here in my town, an 'Emo' is just anyone who has longish hair, that is black, and wears black. A warped view of an Emo, but I can't blame them. They're Chavs.

I get called Emo. Still shrugging it off it pretty easy, and it amuses me how every comment I've gotten this summer (oddly only in summer) that relates to "Get a hair cut", they couldn't say it to my face.

I think the people who say they are emo have a whole new thing called "scene." Now I'm not in HS, but from what I've heard it's quite retarded.

This is all messed up anyway. Originally it was Goth- all black, chains, eyeliner, etc. Then weak kids who didn't want all that got ahold of it, and it became emo. They ACT sad, black still everywhere, hair over the eye, some color. Then the popular kids started doing really weird shit with it: bright colors, bows, ruin new shoes, matching shoes and hoodies, horrible music, rap.

It's all bad.

OT: Emo = Weak ass fuck who doesn't know how to deal with problems outside of listening to MCR, complaining to people, and cutting themeselves.

I remember getting a hair cut, walking through town and having someone say to me "get a hair cut"... I was confused, spose it was by a skin-head though.

Yeah and what's with everyone know wearing these new expensive easily-broken "trainers"?.. they're not trainers at all, they're plimsolls, they're what you had to wear for PE in primary school! (If those who are reading this don't live in the UK, you probably don't understand these words, I apologise).

sadly I think "emo" is defined by trolls on 4chan, I guess if you wear all black (I'm guilty) listen to "whiny" music (also guilty) wear lots of makeup, have black hair with some primary color in it combed to the side, and wear a lot of chains.
if you use it in a derogatory sense your ruining the idea of a functioning society for everyone else, it's just a style much like Gangsta (which I pray dies out soon) goth, prep jock, nerd, and otaku (that's my favorite one).

Complains about conformist trendy music and clothing (also buys conformist and trendy emo music and clothing), wears girl pants, acts gay, dyes their hair black, thinks they have the worst life possible(even though most of them live in the uppermiddle class), bitches about everything(mostly in public or myspace, and also act like hippys.
