What defines Emo?

Emo stands for emotional hardcore, and was from the beginning a genre of rock music, known for it's melodies and emotional lyrics. However, those who listened to it received a bad reputation for their way of clothing and making their hair. This style was insulted for it's dark colors while not being goth. So people associated this with depression, and assumed that everyone who listened to emo cut their wrists.

This is what I've read and heard. Partly from web sources, and partly from people who actually listen to emo music. I think the reason is that emo music attracts certain kind of people, partly those who like the music, but also those who seek comfort in music, as the lyrics often speak of very emotional matters. And as someone who's coped through depression with music, it helps to actually listen to stuff you can relate to.

My personal opinion, "emo"'s can do whatever they want, and those who mock them have no larger respect from me. Am I one? Nope, I'm a full on metalhead. What do I think of them? Well, while I don't agree with their music, I like their style. I happen to find the girls very sexy.

What I don't get is that it stems from this emotionally hardcore music type thing. I listen to a lot of emotional music, my favorite pieces are Chopin's Nocturne No13 Op 48 in Cm which is I believe about grief and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata which is absolutely about unrequited love does that make me an emo? :(
No, cause it isn't emotional hardcore. Emotional hardcore is derived from rock.

Straightened hair, died at least predominantly black or bleached, sometimes with colour in as well. Usually wears black, skinny jeans, fingerless gloves, eyeliner. Not always actually depressed, in fact, most emos I've met are quite happy, cheerful and friendly people. Scene kids are pretty much the same, but they've discovered 'colour' and gone over the top. Music is sort of pop-punk, but really depressed pop-punk.

You know, why couldn't I have been around in the 60s when there was hippies offering free love and mind altering drugs, back when music and the counter culture mattered.

No, instead I had to grow up in the 90s when all the white suburban kids wanted to be gangsta, and now this...lol

...

Actually, I take it back, I remember my dad telling me hippies were really a bunch of assholes and they smelled...0o

...

What were we talking about again?

Emo is a funny term in that, if you can class yourself as one, then you probably aren't one.
What I'm saying is that, there's proper emos, and there's the people who just adopt the style and claim to be one.

It's more the way of thinking than anything that defines an emo.
I think.
I think the people who say they are emo have a whole new thing called "scene." Now I'm not in HS, but from what I've heard it's quite retarded.
No, I think scene is the opposite end of the spectrum: overly hyper, extremely upbeat happy kids, wearing a vast array of neon colours, giving out "free hugs" wherever they can.
Good point. I still think it has roots in emo or goth. I just call them all retards so it doesn't matter a difference to me.

I really don't mean to offend you, but in my country, there is now a neon sign the size of an elephant that spells 'emo'. The immaturity of my classmates is astounding.

It's only warped thanks to the media. I have nothing wrong with being emotional (and lately is an issue) but no one here would class me as an Emo unless my hair was a bit longer, black and wore tight clothing. though really all I need is my hair died black and a piercing to pull it off, since I wear skinny clothes all the time.

Emo is a termed used by stupid people to describe things they presume to understand. Stupid people refers to people who go out of their way to "be emo" and to the people who also mock emos and like to generalize.

I guess its meaning is based on the way it is used or who is using it.
Like for example my hair is black and I dyed a blue strip in it, someone that doesnt know me might say "Look at that emo girl over there." just based on what they see. So in short, I have no idea what its real definition is.
