I don't have a standard name for my RPG characters. In Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, he's called Jerizor. In Skyrim he's called Manleigh Aledrinker. In Oblivion he's called Keswick. And my main Commander Shepard is called Sir Gerald.

It depends on how much I'm going to screw around during the adventure.
If I am trying to be "serious", I'll name him "Quint (Something relevant to the game)-ingburg.
If I'm trying to play for fun, I'll name him "Tiddlywinks Slapdemballs".

Back in the day we used to play D&D (we're talkin' 2nd Ed.) ... My character was Darius Songblade -- an Elven Bladesinger. He was a bit racist, but generally good. If you were Elven he'd go out of his way to rescue you - even if that meant cutting through an army to do it. If you were any other race, pfft **** it, let them sort it out.
Anyway, OT; the name's usally a bit too long, so most times I go by Darius or Songblade. Generally just Songblade though.
Other names I use are Tempest, Leodagen Demitrius, Thelios and Seraphim.

My evil Fallout 3 character was called Electra. Which was pretty funny since she had enough daddy issues to nuke a town. Literally.
Good characters tend to be called Rose or Tiana. (Atrus' grandma from the Myst games.)

Quite a few years ago I came up with the name Gregg Grayl, as a substitute for my own name. Grayl uses a chemistry convention for functional groups to reference my own name, Grayson. Gregg because... uhh... it has the most amount of g's you can fit into a common first name? If I can't think of anything to match theme of the game this is my default.

I have a handful that get used. Mainly as a way to just jump into the game with a premade concept rather than fart around trying to make original toons for every game.
Katarina is a female human warrior/soldier mainly used in modern/sci-fi settings.

Praxedes is a female priest/paladin/templar
Snikkasnakk is a classless goblin

I've used Szadek from MTG a lot and I'll take names from guitar pieces I've learned like Asturias.
I'm thinking of playing swtor again just so I can make the cheese legacy. Mozzarella, Parmesan, Cheddar, ect.

For a while, I named them after myself because I was trying to figure out how to roleplay without thinking in moral extremes. Other than that, it varies. The names are usually made up to sound fantasy-esque, like Kelbin Hedgarr, Drick Thayer, or Caemris Durane. Sometimes the names come from the real world, like Nikolai Galyanov. Sometimes, they're simple and to the point, like Sodd.
Currently I'm playing Skyrim with an argonian female named Ru'Ssrenna. That name is in reference to my first character I beat Morrowind with, Ru'Kassa, the idea being that she's descended from him. I even took advantage of the face-section colorings in the character creation to make a pattern that refers to the events of Morrowind. Sentiment is a very important factor for me in RPGs.

In Fallout, I go by my given name, because it sounds believable in that universe (David, which I normally go by Dave IRL). In fantasy RPG, I go with something that starts with the letter D, so I can somewhat relate to it. These only work when I'm playing myself as the RPG character, if I give the character a completely different back story and personallity, than I do something else (I made an assassin the Fallout: NV that was an asian female that was a bad person, made another assassin w/ AC clothing in Skyrim, ect).
I give all my characters different names and most of the time it's a descriptor and the other times I just look at them and know I want their name to start with a certain letter and go from there. Like my Kahjit in Skyrim is called Seravii because she looks kind of like a Serval.
I always seem to name my character with a 'V,' Vincent, Vivi, Valentine, that sort of thing. If I feel like mixing it up I name them Pietros or Jensen.

Dülineer was my favorite from DA:O, it just popped in my head and off I went. I don't think it needs saying, but the character is a Dwarven male. Umlauts are badass. If the game I'm playing is lame then I'll just try to use a naughty word that I might say when some fuckstick cuts me off on the highway. Cunthead, shitnuts, cockneck, assmouth: my creativity knows no bounds while I'm commuting.
Somebody is going to steal Dülineer and use it for an MMO, which is fine, but I thought of it first and I'll use this thread as proof if I must. Not that I care too much because I'll never play an MMO on principle.
