I just finished reading Kim Harrison's "Black Magic Sanction", which lilmisspotatos mentions above (it being the new book in Hardback in that series. I am currently reading "Was Superman a Spy?" by Brian Cronin, which is about untold and legendary stories in comics, like the origin of the Captain America comic, why the Creator of "The Doom Patrol" felt the X-Men was a rip-off of his comic concept, and so on.
The best thing I read recently was the two latest books in Jane Lindskold's "Breaking the Wall" series, about an alternate land created by the Chinese Emperor Shang-ti 1000 years ago, when he decided to purge books of magic and legends from his Empire. He burned the books and killed the scholars who studied those things, and out of the deaths and burning was born "The Lands of Smoke and Sacrifice" where all the unrealized magical potential ended up. They had their own Emperor, and he had twelve advisors, from families who embodied the animals of the Chinese Zodiac. 100 years ago, the latest Emperor was killed by a rival, and his advisors exiled. They came back to our world, taking the son of the Emperor with them, becoming the Thirteen Orphans. They wanted to return to their homeland, but other things intervened, and each ended up starting a new family in this world.
Now, the descendants of the original Orphans are attacked by their distant relatives from the Lands of Smoke and Sacrifice. Because when they left, taking their Zodiac-based powers with them, they inured the land, and blunted the power of their families. Their distant relatives want the power back, and use magic spells to steal the Legacy from some of the Orphans before the Orphans become aware of what they are doing. But Brenda Morris, the offspring of Gaheris Morris, the Rat, retains a measure of that power after her father's connection to the Rat is stolen, and she joins with the other Orphans to defeat their distant relatives and return the powers that were stolen.
The last two books have the Orphans teaming up with the attackers to return to the Lands, which have become very different from the Lands everyone left. And Brenda, who is part Celtic in ancestry, finds that even though her father has his powers back, she is contacted by the Sidhe, who are also at risk from the villain who had seized control of the Lands of Smoke and Sacrifice- and they need her help and the help of the Orphans to take out the one who could put them all in danger.
