That varies from relationship to relationship.

Sometimes, it's love and and trust. Sometimes it's lust. Sometimes 1 or both in the relationship enjoy being abused. etc...

Wow that is quite a big question you ask there. I think we have sufficiently established that there are a lot of different reason depending on the combination of people who are in it. So the most I can contribute to this is saying how it is for me. After a lot of trial and error at one point I came to the conclusion that for me, there is one big difference between wanting a relationship and not wanting it. And that's the plan to build a life together. Everything else I can think of (or have experienced) also works with one of the loads of other possible arangements between two (or more) people.

I just have a companion that I can trust for life.
I used to look for more specific stuff but right now that is what relationships mean to me.
I know that my partner will always love me, will have my back, protect me from people that mean harm to me, and wil always try to understand me.
