What do you think of classical?

I don't think any genre is inherently better or worse than any other genre. I have, however, found classical the hardest to get into. And I don't mean "hardest to enjoy", I mean...

If someone goig to start listening to rock music and wondered where to start I would say "Highway 61 Revisited, Revolver, Velvet Underground and Nico, Led Zeppelin I, London Calling". Because most classical music happened before albums existed, classical music is a lot harder to put in any order. I haven't found anything like AMG for classical music. There are tonnes of important composers, some of them have hundreds of works, and some of those works have been performed by tonnes of different orchestras.

However, I have gotten into classically influenced music like post-rock and some modern composers like Terry Riley and Steve Reich. Hope to get some more of them, as well as some Philip Glass, Harry Partch and John Cage.

Depends. I listen to a little classical music. But I'm one of those people who listens to a little bit of everything.
Same here. Except for gangsta rap and heavy metal (and pop, eugh.) So I wouldn't consider it anything special. It is unique compared to all the more modern music I listen to (there's this big gap throughout the 1800s and first half of the 1900s that I just can't stand any music.)

At some times, string orchestras and simple but skilled piano melodies are just awesome. But I like modern music that use a lot of those instruments too. I'd really like to see some musicians push the boundaries of what you can do with orchestrated strings rather than that modern arty bullshit, and see more piano-focused music, rather than just having piano bits and then going to guitar. It could be cool.

Thank you. So much.

You opened up a whole new dimension in composers for me. Just with this one man. The one piece by him, Primavera is absolutely gorgeous. I showed my bestfriend and she said right away it was going on her iPod.

Thank you once again. You have outstanding taste in music.

I'll listen to it, but it's not my favorite.

I have to say that a good string section can sound absolutely beautiful though.

Holy shit that song is good though. I appreciate a good build-up.

So much of modern music can be traced back to the days of the composers. I believe that one cannot TRULY be a fan of music without at least some appreciation of the classical era. I'm particularly partial to Beethoven.

I study classical guitar at uni, so yeah. Though i tend to listen almost exclusively to classical guitar music when i listen to classical.

My favourite composers are:

Roland Dyens

Agustin Barrios Mangore (La Catedral is probably my favourite piece of guitar music ever.)

...and Leo Brouwer, though i haven't embedded any Brouwer as i couldn't find anything of enough quality on youtube.

However, this is also amazing:

This guy plays it amazingly well, but i can't find a video of him playing the entire thing, but take this delicious excerpt and bask in its amazingness anyway:

This is the best i could find of the entire piece:

Now, what's your opinion on classical music? Do you like it? Despise it? Think it's boring, and prefer your rockin' metal?

If you do like it, who's your favourite composer?
Einaudi is a composer who made his first works in the late 80's. Not sure what part of that makes it classical.

I love classical music, it keeps me awake on long road trips. This may sound odd to some, but when you listen closely, you hear something new every measure. It doesn't repeat verse chorus verse like shit music nowadays. It holds more feeling, and has stood the test of time.

Favorite composer is Beethoven, but favorite piece EVARS is :

Sergej Vassiljevitsj Rachmaninoff - Piano Concerto No. 2 (Op. 18) - Adagio Sostenuto

This is an okay version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFQaa84MP7c&p=D66944A33D450CED&playnext=1&index=21

You are talking about contemporary music. Or Contemporary Classical if you will..... sorry to sound like a snob.

Wiki: Composers, academics, and musicians developed extensions of music theory and technique. 20th century classical music, encompassing a wide variety of post-Romantic styles composed through the year 1999, includes late Romantic, Modern and Postmodern styles of composition. The term "contemporary music" is sometimes used to describe music composed in the late 20th century through to the present day.

I think of that old orchestra music that isn't close to being remotely popular anymore. It just kind of faded away once people figured out what real music is d:

I wonder how many colleges will be teaching groups of students how to play Lady GaGa 100 years from now!

LOLZ!

Classical is one of my favorite music generes.
It's just always been a very calming, peaceful, and relaxing type of music for me.

I don't really have a favorite composer though.

It's a shame popular culture has trained people to disregard classical music.

You do know that in terms of technicality and virtuoisity many classical composers would most likely have played in metal bands had they been born in this day and age. In fact, if you listen to a few metal songs and compare them to a few symphonies and classical pieces you can hear some distinct similiarities in themes.

This probably explains why I listen to both classical music and metal alike.

I tend to favour individual symphonies or pieces rather than composers, but he organist Johann Sebastian Bach sort of have my biggest adoration. Mainly for the Toccata & Fugue in d minor.

I do like some of the classical music. They have done studied and found that Psychologically, metal fans and classic music loves are by and far the closest in thought patterns and what not.

As I say I love some classical. My fav I think being Pachelbel's Canon:

Though I can cheat somewhat because this rock version of that song also kicks ass:
