In most states you have to be a legal adult and you can go to the courthouse and fill out some forms. In some more conservative states the name has to be approved by a judge or panel. It a bigger pain in the ass than you'd think though because you have to get a new social security card, birth certificate, so on and so forth. Then all your legal history can be an asspain to prove. Like if you put on a job application "I graduated high school" they'll say "Really the high school doesn't have a record of you?
