From what I remember, Age of Conan was incredibly popular early on, with close to half a million sales in its first month. People loved the combat and the player-versus-player elements, but there wasn't an end-game to accompany anything... while that stuff was supposed to be patched in after release, it wound up sitting in a perpetual state of "coming soon!" and internal problems with the developer led to even more delays. As of now I'm pretty sure there's some people hanging on, but it's nowhere near as big as it was at launch.
