Hey! For a lot of people that was a pro, not a con.
Yeah, swapping out my Heat Sink II for a Heat Sink III was truly thrilling stuff.
And turning every thing into omni-gel because you have 8 of each thing (except omni-tools and amps)

I don't know if it really was but Mass Effect 1 felt so much longer that Mass Effect 2 and the Universe you explored felt larger for me.

I didn't mind the combat it wasn't the best I've seen but heck you get infinite ammo (especially with Snowblind rounds as I heard they stop guns apart from the Sniper overheating), the inventory system will slowly become hell if you don't keep it in check.

Unlike in Mass Effect 2 where you can only carry the guns your a specialised in Mass Effect 1 allows you to carry all weapons but not being specilised makes your accuracy terrible for example not specialising in the sniper means you cannot aim down the scope and you do not get Heavy weapons in Mass Effect 1.

The health in Mass Effect 1 appears as a red bar next to your shield indicator bars where in Mass Effect 2 you have a shield bar like in the Halo games and health is measured by red veins appearing on your screen the more you get shot overall I prefer the health setout in Mass Effect 2.

But I would say even if there are bad things in Mass Effect 1 that will put you off definately play it (I'd say play as a Soldier for weapon choices you can change your class to any you want at the start of Mass Effect 2 no matter what you were in Mass Effect 1) and don't skip out of the side quests even they can influence future games because it is more fun to play Mass Effect 2 in a Universe that is unique to the choices you made in the first game than a pre-determined story universe.

Yeah, but by that logic we could describe FPS games as:

Walk around, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot. Pick up stuff. Shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot, shoot.

Repeat.
...We CAN.

I'll say what I said before to someone else in a similar position:

It's 100x better playing ME2 with all the nods and references but more importantly
the default in ME2 with the Council live/die is that they died o_O
In my, and the designers/writers, opinion that is the most important decision in the game and so you really should see whether they go one way or the other.

I prefer the first to the second. I don't feel that the combat's all that inferior, the sense of progression is awesome. Getting to level 60 and becoming a suped up killing machine is tons of fun.
Basically, it feels like more of an RPG.

The story's better too, IMHO.

It's arguable that Mass Effect 2 has "Better combat" it's the same for the combat in 1 it just comes down to preference with no wrong opinions (just because more people agree with one opinion then another doesn't make it less of an opinion and more of a fact). I personally preferred the bulky combat in 1 for it brought more powers to the table and the combat didn't all take place in large rooms connected by hallways where nothing is there except silly keypads and extra ammo to get you ready for the next big room around the corner. What drove me insane about the combat in 2 was it forced cover based combat on me which I really didn't want. I am really not into shooters, with RTS and RPGs always having been my genres of choice so the rpg with shooter combat that was Mass Effect 1 did more for me then the action/shooter with shallow rpg elements that was Mass Effect 2.

I never understood people saying 2 is a better game no arguments, and similar things for 1 in the end there really is no better game of the two it just comes down to preference. From a developing standpoint 2 sold better so 3 will carry on in the vein of 2 which I find unfortunate, in my opinion I would rather them try something completely different again so it would be neither like 1 or 2 to give us all something new to ***** and/or rave about.

I quite likes the combat in ME1. There was less pressure from ammo supplies so you could address a situation as you saw fit. Plus Sniping on ME1 was harder, which I enjoyed as there was challenge.

I also much preferred the story and item systems.

No, 2 is superior to one, combat was greatly improved from the first game.

Wasn't very clear in that sentence. Combat is clunky, but ME is a better game than 2.

That makes me laugh. Think shitty copy of Gears of War shooting gallery mechanics with an extremely poor AI is an more apt description of both Mass Effect games. The only tactic you needed was to hide behind cover as far as possible back and pick off the idiot AI, nothing strategical about the game at all.

I wouldn't say it's a better game, it just has a better told story. What most players didn't appreciate from the second game was how much the RPG elements were streamlined or better said, "dumbed down." But the second game is still a much better put together game as a third person shooter. I actuarially enjoyed the combat this time.

Now as for someone that favors RPG elements over TPS elements, I can understand why the first game might seem better. But it just isn't...=/

On Hard, fighting Krogan involves equipping sledgehammer rounds and pummeling them into a corner for 5 minutes.

Much more RPG-y, but poorly balanced and not worth doing anything but Soldier, Infiltrator or possibly Vanguard. If you don't have a combat specialty then expect to use a lot of pistol rounds.

That would be your opinion. I wouldn't state it as fact. I prefer Me over ME2, neither of us are wrong.

Eh, I beg to differ. ME2 was, basically, all about characterisation, and I feel that it vastly surpassed 1 in that area. And as someone who enjoys that a lot, I prefer ME2, if only slightly. 1 Had a couple of things that were arguably better than in 2 though; the ingame universe felt a lot more grand and it had more customisation. Instead of fixing those problems they scrapped them all together, which might be a little too drastic.

Not really seeing how the story in 1 is all that much better either. I prefered the intricate relationship with Cerberus and the Illusive Man over bickering with the Council, for example. But technically a better story...honestly I don't see how either of them is really better than the other. That is, outside personal preference.

Honestly though I just can't wait for ME3, and see how all my decisions in ME1 and 2 work out. I love it how the ME games are pretty much one big game.

Meh, at least in ME you had a lot more options on how to tackle the situation at hand. Every class offered a wide range of options and gameplay variations.

If by harder you mean "Spam Assassination", without it your Sniper did a pitiful amount of damage.

I do agree that the lack of ammo made it more fun, as it added more variables when considering weapon upgrades and cooldowns. I also preferred the inventory in that there was one, and there was more then one upgrade for your weapon :p

I prefer ME1 to ME2. Infinite ammo, planetary exploration, no resource gathering, single power cooldown, and no auto regenerating health. I hate auto regenerating health, it makes all the combats feel like isolated fights instead of one seamless experience.

Also, ME2 has infinite creature spawn points. If there's something I hate more than auto regenerating health, it's infinite spawning. If you can camp a site and pick off the enemy one at a time, it's kudos to you, but with infinite spawn points you're forced to press the attack and therefore play aggressively.

All in all, advantage ME1.

Wow. I did not realise it was possible to feel this much love for another human being.

ME1 may be a little clunky at times, but it's so varied you can play however you want to. Just find a style you like and get killing stuff. Goes for both games (but when you start on ME2 remember to take cover more. A lot more. Good job those chest high walls are absolutely everywhere.)

Can't say I ever had any problems - there are usually some ammo clips lying around anyway, not dropped by enemies.
Not to mention the fact that those ammo drops re-spawn infinitely. So, if the fight is going on too long and you're low on ammo, you can always go back to that location to get more.

Umm...I believe you can only get the Spectre weapons on subsequent playthroughs, and only if you get the Rich achievement. I could be wrong, though.
I looked it up and you're correct. I had completely forgotten about that because it's been so long since I first got that achievement.

The weapon progression is still shit though. There is no actual decision making based on play style, it just boils down to what gun has the better stats, period. Also, two weapon models and about 4 colors for each weapon type is really boring.
