The first screenshot I saw for Oblivion is what sold it for me... [http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/738/738356/the-elder-scrolls-iv-oblivion-20061010103346385.jpg]

I'm not sure why, there was just something so appealing about it.
That, and I'm a sucker for medieval fantasy.

The first 2 screenshots of Shadow of The Colossus that I saw in a game's magazine a year before the first real game footage was shown.

And the first live on-stage demo of LittleBigPlanet at GDC. The music alone made me wanna buy that game.

If I get a good demo, I'm almost guaranteed to buy a game. I bought Transformers solely because I had a blast in the multiplayer demo, and figured it would be even more awesome with more classes.

A 2d fighter will get my money every time, even if I know nothing about it... **** you Battle Fantasia, regret soon follows. I still don't have SSF4 thanks to my current monetary situation, or lack thereof.

Warhammer 40k: I owned every expansion for DoW 1, and I actually hate strategy games, but Space Marines are so cool. Also Tau, I want Tau for my DoW 2.

Edit: missed a space.

Often a game where there's multiple people on screen at once is a good selling point for me.
And as much as I hate to admit it, pretty graphics also help "sell" me on a game.

Mirror's edge: The visual aesthetic, combined with first person platforming.

Usually character customization, zombies, attractive anime girls, or open worlds...

Also, maybe game length, I like playing long games...

Dungeons and Dragons Online. It boasted the ability to shoot an arrow at a wall near a mob, and instead of instantly being attacked by that mob, it would instead inspect the area where the noise came from, which would be where the arrow hit the wall.

Didn't play it long though. Way too many loading screens got me annoyed.

Also, Guild Wars 2 is looking to have some interesting gameplay mechanics. They noted once that if you shoot an arrow at a mob, and that mob moved, the arrow would continue to fly straight and possibly hit something behind the original mob.

It's funny that people say Mirror's Edge. When I looked at it, I thought "This is going to have no replay value." So I rented it. Probably the best decision I've ever made.

I usually like any open-world game, as I just love all the freedom you get. Case in point: Oblivion, Risen, Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed 1/2, etcetera.

Assassin's Creed and Mirror's Edge parkour.

Man, i love parkour on games. it's a shame that the games are nothing special (however, i loved AC2).

'Not being Call of Duty' will probably sell me Medal of Honour. Plus the beta was pretty decent. Oh, talking of demos, the Kane and Lynch 2 demo was great. That sold me with pure, unrivalled bad-assery.
Except for the multiplayer connection issues, I agree with you.

Uh, total destruction in Red Faction Guerilla. Awesome.

They were no worse than the issues in MW2, and MoH is still the beta. But yeah, I do hope they manage to do something about it.

Simplicity, balance, and challenge. Cutting the fat is ideal to every game I wish to call my favorite, and too many companies these days don't understand how to trim all the useless crap off their games. Balance and challenge are both self explanatory.

I feel like my favorite games all incorporate these features well (WolfET, Galaga, Ghouls & Ghosts, and more recently Starcraft 2)
