See thread title for what I'm asking for (I'm not even sure if this IS a game, but its a fair guess), what game is this? And is it available for download anywhere?

Yep, definately Oregon Trail, a newer version of it, my elementary school had it when it got a crap load of Imacs when they first came out.

There's prolly some free version of it, since its deemed educational.
I hated the game 'cause my father tried to have me play it, and I got killed by a snake.

Oregon Trail alright, my classrooms used to have that to play before school, my entire family always died and ate each other though (thanks to the best mod ever).

I actually played that thing over and over til I finished it. Those were....regrettable times.

"Get Advice."

"Well, you dun buried em', yer done, move on wit yer lives before I get that rattlesnake back here to bite you!"

But yeah, definitely some version of Oregon Trail. I know GameTap is running some newer versions (by "newer" I mean newer than the Apple IIe version I played as a kid) this is probably one of them.

What exactly is this game about?
It basically is a educational game where you're a team of settlers setting out west for a free homestead in the time of the great American migration west. It covers the dangerous journey: hunting for food, fording rivers, ect.

All I did in that game was hunt like a ************.
You and every one else. I don't think I ever got the final float down the river thing done right.

One thing I never understood about it was how people could die from having a broken leg just as easily as they could from Typhoid or Dysentery.

Maybe from infection? It's funny because the game wasn't really hard, just random ailments that pretty much meant you were screwed. I think I beat the game once, out of the many times I've played it as a kid.

HAHA! Good old 5-1/4" floppy discs, I remember playing Oregon Trail on those all the time.

Ahhh, the Oregon Trail. I've got the 2004 edition laying around somewhere. I've yet to play it though - just having it is enough to satisfy my nostalgia.
