What games don't you "understand"?

This isn't an opinion thread: we each have our own opinions, and they're all fine. This is more about not understanding "hype", acclaim, or anything surrounding any game.

For me, it's Diablo I. More than once, I've heard several people praise the game, sometimes saying it's better than D2. I finally got a chance to play it, and it is quite fun, but I don't understand how people can like D1 more (and they have played both). Was it just a "revolutionary for its' time" thing? Was it just the old-timer phenomenon (i.e. things back in my day ruled and new stuff sucks)? Help if you can.

^This, COD4, and Half Life 2. Both fine games but good lord, where is this god like grace that people claim...

COD4. While I like it, I don't think it is as groundbreaking as made out to be.

Errr... I mean, I did not see why the game was held in such high prestige. Yea, thats it.

You say it's not an opinion thread then you give your opinion on D1?

But I think I agree with Several People, D1 was fantastic. You just had to be around when it was released, I guess. Same with Doom 1 and 2.

The Halflife series. Sure, it's functional/competent, but so are a lot of other games, and I don't understand why gamers tend to treat it like the biggest invention since the wheel.

Call Of Duty 4. All I saw was a slightly above average shooter.

And MMPORPGs. I never understood how people can just grind so much. I almost end up tearing my face out in frustration with some of the JRPGs if I don't take time off from the (from my point of view) excessive and needless grinding they have.

And... Fable (The Lost Chapters, not going to even touch the second). Sure, nice FPS with heavy RPG elements in it placed in a fantasy world, but it isn't brilliant or even particularly good.

Monkeys Island.
Wasn't there for it's start and never got into point and clicks.

Although I do understand, people would hate an original 2d Prince of Persia remake if it was the same just shinier, I however would bum it's binary out.

I didn't really understand why everyone talks about Gears of War being much better than Gears of War 2. The only real differences is that one Gears 2, the graphics are better, the story made a little bit more sense, the game was longer, the controls are smoother, it's easier to use your chainsaw, it wasn't as dark and hard to see where you are going, there are more weapons, the online is put together in an excellent fashion, and it has new and better enemies.

I'm just going to repeat what I said in anoter thread, in another forum, months ago: I think Halo is really bad, and I'm sure that when I get around to playing it it'll just strenghten my opinions.

I also thought GoW had really bad third person shooter mechanics, but maybe I shouldn't hold it to such high standarts as a Nintendo 64 game (WinBack, to be precise).

Guitar Hero. I mean, maybe it's just that playing guitar has turned me into a music snob, but, to me, it just seems like DDR for your fingers, only without the crowd of cute girls to impress/kick my ass at it. I don't know, it just feels like an arcade game to me.

I'm sorry, I don't normally do this, but I don't know what you mean: there's no FPS to be found in Fable. And on a similar note, I think only Mr. Peter hold his game up to any acclaim.

For me it's BioShock. I don't get what was so great about it.

Fighting games. I don't understand a lot of the devotion to them.
I understand the enjoyment of playing them for fun, especially games like Blazblue, guilty gear, smash bros. But tournaments and hardcore devotion to them seems foolish to me.

Kinda the same with racing games. With racing games its the fastest car driving on the "best line". Again, I see the fun in the games, but hardcore devotion... no.

It was the first FPS let you see the narrative unfold entirely whilst in control of your character. That was what was groundbreaking. The fact that it was imaginatively designed, beautiful to look at, really playable and spawned some of the best online communities online gaming has ever seen is the icing on the cake.
