Realism. And screw realism! Luckily, my latest-to-be-game will feature health meters. The only way of regeneration of 'true health' is by killing more enemies in gory ways. There's a shield system like Halo, except with added badassery.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine?

That Health system is pretty sweet so far, just hope it is even more varied in the final release.
Yes and could you clarify by 'more varied?' Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it become even better but I'm not sure how this could happen.

Borderlands, in my opinion have a really good balance with the whole health bar system,

They have a health bar and, through equipment, a regeneration shield.

And the health packs are not "just" laying around waiting to be picked up, sure you can be lucky to find one or two in a containing, but they are occasional dropped by enemies you kill.

So Borderlands has a non regeneration health bar, but occasionally dropped health packs, but a regeneration shield through equipment, therefore the strength of the shield also various after your equipment.

A really good combination and they've made it work great!

One word, immersion. By removing health meters the game hopes to draw you in to the game and story without having to look at meters that are, for lack of a better word, outside our experience.

Some games put health meters on the character, ammo count on the guns, I for one am for this because it give you the information you need without having you look outside your experience.

I was thinking exactly this while fighting the bosses in Deus Ex: HR, I'd like to know if my pistol is doing more damage than my assault rifle.
You would have thought that a world of half-human/half-machines would have better health regulators for others.
