Everybody seems to slate EA these days, but I love them for their iPhone games, The Sims, Sim City. But apparently, EA is the devil..... How come?

you say you love the sims and sim city, well they're both maxis (will wright)
the problem i have with them is they're happy with just sustaining the status quo, but Mirrors edge was a really good thing, we need more than that

The same bloody sports games every year.
My friends' unfortunate Battlefield patching issues. EA only supplied the latest patch, which required all previous patches to work.

And they didn't give my mum a job.

Have you noticed how many expansion packs there are for The Sims, each priced at about $20, each containing only (I'm told) tiny bits of content?
Oh Yes. We hate EA for The Sims and it's countless bastard offspring too.

In the thick of the economical crisis (late last year, early this year) EA shut down around 12 different studios and layed off around a quarter from under studios that survived their so called "budget cuts" so their bosses could have the same amount of money shove into their closets as their pockets aren't big enough.

They just remake the same games all the time. They are getting better. Mirrors Edge was the first step.

Because I miss bioware, westwood and the various other game devs that were bought out by EA. I also hate this trend of spend more time developing DRM than the game, which EA largely started. Not to mention the constant spam titles, "The sims: Autumn foliage!", and "Madden:hot date" do not appeal to me.

But wasn't EA behind Dead Space as well? And why all the bashing now? I've already run through threads like these at least a couple times before just leave it alone. Everyone has pretty much stated their opinion on this subject unless some new develpment happens that sways public opinion dramatically I don't see a reason to rehash the same stuff

i think at one point in recent years public opinion of ea was improving; yes they are still releasing more and more Fifa and NFL games on a yearly basis, but the improvements each year have been more noticeable; they started loads of new ips, such as mirrors edge and Spore, and released Dead Space.

The publics perception of EA was on the up, but then there was all that DRM shit and now they have gone back down to the bottom of the barrel....

I have no problems with EA or any other such company. I think people just like having someone to criticise, which is natural. They make good games... sometimes not so good but that can be said of anyone.

Mass Effect too, although its worth remembering most EA new IPs are externally developed.

And the DRM is really tanking public opinion, but will they listen? Nah.

As for the Sims, I do occasionally enjoy some time spent on there - certainly a break from the hordes of Space Marines fighting generic Space Aliens (not that there's anything wrong with that, but people need variety!). But their business model of "Lets add a single feature and charge £10+ for it as an expansion is very annoying. Although even thats not as bad as the 'stuff packs' - basically, take free stuff off of their website and sell it to people on a CD.

EDIT: Oh, and they screwed over Spore badly. Nearly everything in it that was bold and fresh from the old E3 demo was burned away. Which is frankly rather typical of EA's approach to games, or rather gamers - they underrate 'casual' gamers by assuming they can't understand '1 leg means he'll be slower', and so added in an attribaty and stupid stats system.

EA got better - in some parts.

They still understand how to press the last piece of potential cash out of their "selling" franchises like (My)Sims, Spore and their sports games. (which, for themselve, are good but too frequently). DRM single handedly killed Spore and Red Alert 3 - I dont have to say more.

The support for the Nintendo consoles is besides Nintendo (of course) and SEGA the best one company offers right now. Sure, you still have to dig away from lots of girly crap they make but sometimes moon, mars and saturm form a dircet line to earth and EA makes some AWESOME games like Boom Blox or Henry Hatsworth.

Even games that didnt turn out that good as hoped like Skate It are still enjoyable and you can see that where made with thoughts and effort !

They have for example Dead Space Wii (I love railshooter, so tits or GTFO) and Grand Slam Tennis in their pipeline - two very potential hits in 2009 for me.

They actually have listened on the DRM front, as they have decided to stop using DRM in all their PC games! :p They are going to patch all their games such as Spore, Mass Effect etc which use their DRM measures to remove said features.

....?! Since when? And how has this not been featured on the Escapist?! I knew The Sims 3 is going to have no DRM, but I hadn't heard they'd remove it from all games.
