Believe it or not, Target in Australia isn't affiliated with Target in the United States. They have the same name, branding and they're the same type of stores, but they're actually owned by K-Mart down here.

Wait, what? How is that even possible? Let me guess, your K-Mart isn't affiliated with our K-Mart either?? Maybe it's because everything can kill you in Australia, our US lawyers are too afraid to serve the obvious lawsuit...

I guess we really are the last of us
To be fair, there's actually too many of us, and we're due for a good culling. I hope I get drafted by the clickers!!

I'm genuinely not sure of the details myself, sadly. Possibly, Target down here wasn't doing very well, and Target back home decided to sell off the dead weight to K-Mart, and K-Mart would only buy it if they could keep calling the old Target stores Target? That's just a guess out of my ass, though.

But how is it they are objectively indistinguishable from one another, yet exist as wholly unrelated entities? Just sounds weird seeing as branding and trademarks are a legal thing, yet we've got two identical companies who just seem to be fine being identical to each other for any objective observer...

Not quite.

Two unrelated companies that happened to come up with the same name and similar logo in the 60s.

The US company Kmart started, and later sold off, Kmart Australia, so they are now separate entities as well.

As an aside when the US franchise Burger King wanted to come to Australia, they found that there was an unrelated local Burger King that owned the name there, so called themselves Hungry Jacks instead.

I'm just going to assume the Australian bastardization of Target is poisonous. It's safer this way.
